JOURNAL-JACK.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE C. CLINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Baltimore, in the county of WVood and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Journal-Jacks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in jacks for raising ournal boxes of car-wheels so that new brasses or bearings may be inserted within the journal box without occasioning the removal of the wheel of the car from its axle, or moving the wheel in any way.

In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a jack of this class which embodies few parts, which can be constructed at a small cost and which can be operated at a minimum amount of physical exertion.

With the above objects and others of a similar nature in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and operative arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.

In the drawing,I*igure 1 is a front elevation of my improvement showing the same in applied position. Fig. 2 is a detail view looking upward toward the toothed wheel 26.

Referring now to the drawing, in detail, the numeral 1 designates a car wheel, and 2 the ordinary ournal box therefor.

The numeral 3 designates the improved lifting jack in general. The jack comprises a member f having a centrally threaded bore 5, the member adjacent its opposite ends be ing provided with openings 6, for the reception of links 7. Connected with each of the links 7 is a hook S, and this hook is adapted to engage the lower link of the chain 9. The upper links of the said chains are connected with a suitable bar 10, and the said bar 10 also supports shorter chains 11 and 12. The upper links of these chains 11 and 12 are connected with a ring 13, and loosely positioned upon the said ring are a pair of wheel engaging hooks l t and 15. The member 4: is formed with an offset or depending portion 16 arranged upon its lower face and adjacent one of its ends. This extension is provided with an opening Specification of Letters Patent.

17 through which passes a shaft 18, having one of its ends formed with a handle 19 and its opposite end connecting with a beveled toothed wheel 20. Secured for rotation within the threaded opening 5 of the memher i is a screw 21, the same being provided with a swiveled head 22 which rests upon the bottom of the box. This screw is provided with a vertically arranged slot 23 and the slot is adapted to engage with a projection or lug 24: extending within the bore 25 of a beveled toothed wheel 26. This beveled toothed wheel is adapted to rest upon the bottom of the member f and to intermesh with the beveled toothed wheel 20.

From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the simplicity of the device as well as the method of operating the same, will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such inventions appertain Without further detail description.

Having thus described the invention what I claim is In a journal jack, a member provided with a centrally arranged threaded bore, a threaded element having a swiveled head engaging the bore, said threaded element being provided wit-l1 a longitudinally extending depression, a beveled toothed wheel having a bore provided with a stud surrounding the threaded element and having its said stud engaging within the depression, the member being further provided with a depending portion providing a journal for a shaft, a shaft within the ournal and being provided with a beveled toothed wheel which engages with the first-named beveled toothed wheel, a handle for the shaft, chain members including hooks connected with the member, a bar connecting the chains, auxiliary chain members also connected with the bar and arranged at an angle to the bar, a ring connecting the auxiliary chain members, and wheel engaging hooks connecting the ring, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
