Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 24, 1912.
fipplicatioii filed August 4, 1911; Serial No. 642,299.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILTON F. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louis, Missouri, have invented acertain new and useful Improvement in Adjustin Mechanism for Crushers or Pulverizers, 0 which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to 'makeand use the same, reference being had improvement in crushers and pulverizers fordisintegratlng materlals of various kinds and particularly to the means for adjusting the breaker plate and that portion of thegrinding cage connected thereto.
In the drawings: 1 indicates the side framing of the machine, and 2 the front wall thereof.
3 indicates a hopper plate through whose opening 3 the material to be operated upon by the machine is fed. As the material is fed into the machine it drops upon a breaker plate 4 pivoted at 5. The material rolling down the breaker plate will be struck by the revolving hammers or heaters 6 pivotally mounted upon the hammer supports 7 which are strung on a shaft 8. Below the breaker plate is a grinding surface 9, said grinding surface being movable with the breaker plate. Lugs 10 extend from the lower end of the breaker plate frame on each side of the machine, in which lugs is mounted a shaft 11. Links 12 connect the shaft 11 with.
a shaft 13, whose ends pass through inclined slots 2 in the side frames 2. The outer ends of shaft 13 are flattened, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 and carry inserted in the flattened portions threaded rods 14 which rods have threaded connection with a Worm Wheel 15 mounted in a gear housing 16 secured to the side frame 2. The hub of this worm wheel 15 acts as a nut and being confined between the walls of the gear housing will, when rotated. raise or lower the shaft 13 in its inclined slots and move the grinding surface 9 toward or from the striking point ofthe hammer to take up wear of the latter.
The means for rotating the gears 15 on each side ofthe machine in unison, consists of worms 17 mounted in the gear housing 16 and meshing with the gears 15., The worms 17, are on the ends of, shafts 18, one of which carries a hand wheel 19 and is geared to the other by means of a chain 20 passing over sprockets 21.
By the above construction, when the'hand wheel 19 is turned, the breaker plate. and its carried grinding surface 9 can be adjusted as desired.
In Fig. 4', I have shown a modified form in which the rod 11 is connected by a link 12 to a shaft 13 mounted to slide in inclined openings 2 in the side walls of the casin The rod 14 carried by the shaft 13 in thls modified construction has threaded engagement with the hub of a work gear 15 mounted in gearing housing 16 and with which worms 17* on a shaft 18 cooperate. The shaft 18 extends transversely of the machine and is mounted in suitable hearings in the side frames 2, and is preferably provided with a handle at one end, not shown, by which the shaft and its carried worms may be rotated and the threaded rod 14: moved longitudinally to effect the adjustment .of the grinding surface.
What I claim is:
1. In a machine. of the character described, the combination of a framing having slots in its side walls, a rod slidingly mounted in said slots, a movable member, links pivotally connected to said movable member and to said rod, threaded members carried by said rod, worm gears with which said last men tioned members have threaded engagement, a gear housing for said worm gears, and means for rotating said worm gears.
.2. In an article of the class described, in combination a casing provided with guide slots, a shaft slidingly mounted in said slots, a movable member, links pivotally connecting the ends of the shaft with the movable member, the disposal of said slots being such as to form bearing surfaces for said shaft when pressure is applied to said movable member.
3. In a device of the class desoribed, walls provided with guide slots, a movable memher, a shaft slidably mounted in said guide slots, pivoted linksconnecting said shaft weeeee with said movable member a, screw thread shaft mind said movable menf ed member mounted in said. shaft, 23L sci-Yew rod for moving saiti shaft 11" a threaded Wheel cooperating with said searew disposal of said slots being threaded member, a casing ebutEing both sure upon the movabie mermw sides of said wheel, and means for rotating; she-ft against the side of the 'ihreedeol said Wheel to shiftsaid eezeew threededmem- ."In testimony whereof 1f herel Leo aflix my be! longltudmelly and oscniate set-1d movsignature 1n the presence of WHZAIBSSQS,
