Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 24,1912.
Application filed May 3, 1909. Serial No. 493,476.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSHUA R. Ray and THOMAS RAY, both citizens of the United 'States, residing at Manistee, in the county SIZE.
The object of our invention is to provide a simple, strong, and efficient device of the kind described, arranged to produce chips or pieces of substantially uniform or any desired number of different dimensions in length and width either of which dimensions may be changed to suit the particular purpose for which the chips are to be employed.
To this end our invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims. I
In the accompanying drawings, wherein like or similar reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts; Figure 1 is a side elevation of our device with parts removed and broken away to more clearly show the construction. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail of the movable wall of the chute for directing the material to the cutter together with a portion of the piston-rod for controlling its position. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of our device. Fig. 5 is a sectional detail of the operating valve for controllingthe crosssection of the chute. Fig. 6 is an elevation of the preferred form of cutter blade of our device. Fig. 7 is a detail of the mechanism for preventing longitudinal movement of the cutter head shaft. Fig. 8'is a front elevation of the cutter head of our device. Fig. 9 is a section taken substantially on line 99i of Fig. 8; and Fig. 10 is an enlarged fragmentary detail of the cutterhea d. y r
In the preferred form shown in the draw-v ings, our device consists of a suitable frame or base-plate 1, upon which is mounted a pair of bearings 2 and 3- or equivalent means. A shaft 4 is supported jointly in the bearings 2 and 3 and rovided intermediate its ends with a cutter sad 5 and a drive pulley "6 or any suitable means for rotating said shaft and cutter head. The cutter head 5 may be of any desired form. size, or construction. As shown this part consists of a suitably formed disk rigidly secured to the shaft and having one substantially flat face 7 provided with a plurality of angular or V-shaped slots 88 extending through the head. A portion of the cutter head adjacent each slot 8 is formed to operate as a seat 15 for receiving a cutter blade 9 and securely holding the same in position in the head 5. Each of the blades 9 is preferably positioned in a slot 8 with its cutting edge projecting at the face 7 of the cutter head a suitable distance to engage the material to be cut and produce a chip of the desired length. The two portions of each slotare arranged to diverge -toward the direction of rotation of said head from a circle concentric to the cutter head, that is, when the cutter head is in operation the several blades secured to the head will have their edge adjacent the common concentric line above referred to, at the rear of the opposite edge of the blade, that is, the general line of the cutting edge of each blade will incline rearwardly and toward said circle.
Any suitable form or construction of cutting blade may be provided. In the form shown a substantially independent cutting blade 9 is provided for each portion of each slot 8, or if preferred a plurality of substantially independent blades may be provided depending upon the method employed for securing the blades in position, and the form of the chips desired.
As shown in Fig. 6, the cutting blade is provided with a plurality of substantially V-shaped grooves formed in its face extending to the cutting edge of the blade, so arranged that the cutting edge of each blade consists, of a connected series of V-shaped notches. One edge ofeach notch is preferably sharpened and adapted to serve as a cutting portion so that when the blade is positioned in its slot and properly secured in position as shown in Fig. 10, a series of substantially independent cutting portions .11
are presented at the face of the head 5 each extending in a radial direction to the cutter head 5 and adapted to o erate substantially independently thereby orming a series of chips or shavings, each chip or shaving corresponding in width to t e width of the cutting portion 11 by which it is formed and extending across the entire surface pro-- sented to the cutters of the material being operated upon.
In the preferred construction shown the grooves 10 are substantially of uniform size and form so that the several cutting portions 11 of each blade will be of the same size and will out a substantially equal amount of material thereby producing chips or shavings of substantially uniform dimensions. It" is obvious however that if desired the size and form of groove 10 may be altered to suitany peculiar condition which may be presented so that the width of the cutting portions 11 will not be uniform and will there-' by produce chips or shaving varying in size. The blades 9-9 may be secured in position upon the head 5 in any suitable manner. In the form shown'each blade is provided with suitable slots 12 or equivalent means and a cap-screw 14 or other suitable holding device.
is provided arranged to extend through each slot into suitable threaded holes'in the blade seat 15 of the cutter head for this purpose.
To secure the best results it is often desirable to adjust'the size of the opening 8 through which the blades 99 project and for this purpose a throat-plate 16 or equivalent means is provided upon the face 7 of the cutter head, suitablyformed to control the width of the opening 8 as desired. Any suitable means may be provided for rigidly securing the throat-plate 16 in position. In the form shown a recess or depression is. formed in the face 7 of the cutter head 5 ofsuitable form and depth to receive the: throat-plate and bring its outer face just;
flush with the'face 7. A pluralityvof slotted openings 17 are formed through the throat-.5 plate and a suitable cap-screw 18' is pro-' vided for each opening extending into a suit-, able hole in the cutter head 5 to hold the plates, in position in the recess. The openings 17 and screws 18 are so formed that when the screws are in place holding the plate in position no part of the screws will= project beyond. the face of the plate.
Means are provided for directing the ma-% terial to be operatedupon to the cutter'head.
In the form shown a frame or housing 19; is :mounted upon the base 1 and provided:
with a chute 20 suitably inclined to the face of the cutter head so that the cutting blade; Wlll operate upon the material in the chutej with a drawing, or shearing action with the grain of .the wood. In the preferred construction shown the upper side of the chute 20 is arranged to be moved transversely of? the chute to control the cross-section of thechute and to prevent as far as possible the:
movement of the material during the cut-f tin operation.
nysuitable means may be provided for adjusting the position of the movable side 21 and also for firmly locking the same in its; ad usted position. .In the form shown a suitable cylinder 22 is provided upon the housing: 19 havinga, piston 23 fitted to its 1 interior. A piston rod 24 is attached to the piston 23 and extends through both heads spectively and each extend toa four-way i cock or valve '27 to which is also attached a suitable suppl'y'pipe 28 for conducting water or other fluid under pressure to said device and an exhaust pipe 29' for discharging the fluid from the cylinder. 7
The valve 27 maybe of any suitable form. As shown (Fig; 5), this valve is provided with a central opening 30 of the usual or any preferred form and the ports leading from the pipes 25, 26, and 28 to this central opening are each preferably of substantially the samecross-sectional area, while the port leading from the central opening to the exha'ust pipe 29 is preferably very much smaller so that when the movable portion 31 of the valve is positioned as shown in Fig. 5, the passage of fluid from the supply pipe 28 to the upper end of thecylinder through the pipe 25 will be comparatively free and unobstructed while the passageof fluid from the lower end of the cylinder through the pipe 26 to the exhaust pipe 29 will be very much obstructed, thus securing a steady even movement of the parts and maintaining a considerable pressure upon the fluid thereby tending to firmly hold the piston in any position in the cylinder. Obviously when the part 31 of the valve is rotated to connect the pipe 26 with the supply pipe 28 and the pipe 25 with the exhaust pipe 29 the action will be substantially the same as above described except that the piston and connected parts will be moved. in the opposite direction. When it is desired to lock the piston in position in the cylinder 'it is only necessary to so position the rotatable part 31 that its ports will not be in communication with any of the ports communicating with the Y preventing the escape of fluid from either end of the cylinder and preventing any 'several pipes connected to the valve thereby I cover 32 is provided extending from the I the blades 9 are adapted to lie inimmediate contact with each other so that the blades positioned in the two portions of the slot or opening 8 will operate substantially as a sin for ed a sin le blade of suitable form may be employe in place of the two blades shown in each slot or any desired number of separate cutting blades may be provided in place of the single blades shown so long as the series of cutting portions 11 or their equivalents are retained as shown in Fig. 10 of the drawings.
Any suitable means maybe provided for holding the shaft 4 against longitudinal movement in the bearings and to receive the thrust caused by the material in the chute pressing against the face of the cutter head 5. As shown 'a part 40 is provided at the center of the face 7 of the head 5 to press against one end of the bearin 2; The shaft 4 projects slightly beyond t e end of the bearing2 and is there provided with a longitudinally extended threaded openin 41 and a pin 42 or other suitable means aciapted to. engage and prevent rotation of the cap 43 and distance pieces 44 ositioned betweenthe end of the shaft an the ca In the form shown the cap43 is provide with a central recess 45 to fit the end of the shaft 4 and with the arts outside the recess faced or otherwise finished to bear against the end a of the bearing 2 and cooperate with the part sufliciently close to prevent the free movethe movable side 21 is adjusted to suit the hence we do not' wis 40 of the head 5 to hold the shaft against longitudinal movement. A cap-screw 46 is provided extending through a central opening in the cap 43 and engaging the opening 41 in the shaft to rigidly secure the cap in position.
In operation power'is transmitted to the pulley 6 from any suitable source to rotate the cutter head in the direction indicated in the drawings (Fig. 2), a strip or any desired number of strips-or logs of wood are positioned in the chute 20 with their lower ends projecting through the chute into contact with the face of the cutter head 5 so that each blade as it passes the material will remove a portion from the end of each of the strips or logs. The movable side of the chute 21 is moved down into close contact with the material in the chute 20 but not ment of the strips by gravity in the chute, and as the material is cut away by the action of the blades upon the cutter head other material is inserted in the chute and size and form of the same.
Having thus described our improvement, it is ObVlOllS that various immaterial modifications may be made in our device without departing from the s irit of our invention,
ii to be understood as e blade. And it is obvious that if pre-.
limiting ourselves to the exact form and construction shown.
