To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUoUsr F. Fnonnmrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety W'hip- Sockets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a whip socket and more particularly to means for retaining the whip within the socket.
The primary object of the present invention is to construct a device of this character with locking means which will automatically retain the whip within the socket and thereby prevent unauthorized persons from tampering with the same.
Other objects will appear hereinafter as the description continues.
With the above and other objects in view this invention consists of novel details of construction, combination, formation and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and particularly pointed out in the appended drawings in which,
Figure 1 is a section through a whip socket having my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 in the direction of the arrows as shown; and Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Reference now being had to the drawings wherein like parts are illustrated by like numerals throughout the several views the numeral 10 indicates a cylindrical tube having its lower end closed and its upper end opened with the upper extremities of the tube curved inwardly as shown at 11. This cylinder 10 is also provided with a pair of brackets 12 by which the same may be secured to the dash board or any other part of the vehicle in the usual and well known manner. A whip 13 which is adapted to be retained within the socket is of such a diameter that when the same is inserted in the socket there will be a space between the inner periphery of the cylinder and the whip but the inwardly curved portions 11 will prevent any one from gaining access into the interior of the same. To whip sockets of this construction I provide a locking means which will prevent unauthorized persons from removing the whip from the socket and which will easily and readily admit the lnsertion of the whip into the socket. This locking means consists of a vertically moving and swinging arm 14 pivotally connected as at 15 to a vertically sliding pin 16 which is adapted to operate within a vertically extending slot 17 formed in one wall of the casing. This pin 16 is also provided with a milled nut 18 by which the operator may 5 lower the arm 14. for a purpose which will be hereinafter described.
A leaf spring 19 is secured at one end to the casing 10 and its outer free end normally holds the lower end of the arm 14 into engagement with the outer periphery of the whip. The lower extremity of this arm 14 is provided with an arouate transversely extending portion having its inner face serrated to form a suitable gripping means for retaining the whip within the socket. A lug 20 extends inwardly from one side of the casing and has mounted thereon a coil spring 21 which is connected to the lower end of the arm 14 and has a tendency to normally hold the arm in a raised position but to prevent this coil spring from raising the arm I provide a sliding lock for holding the same in a lowered position until the operator desires to release the whip from the socket.
This lock comprises a casing extending laterally from the mam casing 10 formed integral therewith and has slidably mounted i therein a pawl 22. The inner end of this pawl 22 is enlarged and is provided with a recess fora longitudinally extending pin 23 mounted within the casing. A coil spring encircles the pin 23 and normally holds the pawl within the cylindrical casing. The upper end of the arm 1.4 when the same is in a locked position engages under the lower face of the pawl 22 but when the pawl is released the coil spring 21 will force the same in an upward position thereby allowing the whip to be removed from the socket.-

This lock casing is also provided with the usual key hole 26 through which is inserted a key 27 so that as the key is rotated it will engage a laterally extending lug 24 formed upon the pawl 22 thereby drawing the said pawl within the lock casing and permitting the arm 14 to assume a raised position as before described. It is apparent when the arm 14 is in a raised position it will hold the pawl 22 inwardly or in an unlocked position. WVhen the locking means are in an unlocked position the whip 13 may be inserted into the socket and by pressing downwardly on the milled nut 18 the gripping member will be forced into contact with the whip by means of the leaf spring 19 and the pawl 22 will then be released thereby assuming a position within the casing 10 through the instrumentality of the coil spring 24E which will obviously hold the arm 14 in a lowered position thereby preventing the removal of the whip.
It is obvious from the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings that I have shown and described the specific embodiment of the present invent-ion which willibe inexpensive in the cost of manufacture, strong, durable and reliable when in use and a device which will prevent unauthorized persons from removing the whip from the socket. It is to be further understood that other minor details of construct-ion may be resorted to that come within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit thereof.
hat I claim is 1. In a whip socket the combination of a cylindrical casing having a vertically eX- tending slot formed therein, an arm slidably mounted within said slot, a gripping member pivotally connected to said arm, a leaf spring secured to said casing and adapted to hold the lower ends of said gripping member in an inward position, a coil spring for normally holding said gripping member in a raised position, a sliding lock for holding said gripping member in a lowered position and the upper end of said gripping member adapted to hold said lock in an inward position when said gripping member has been released substantially as described.
2. In a whip socket, the combination of a cylindrical casing having a vertical extending slot formed therein, a laterally extending arm slidably mounted within said slot, a gripping member fulcrumed at its inter mediate portion to said arm, means for nor mally holding the lower end of said gripping member in an outward and upward position, and a lock for engaging the upper end thereof, substantially as described.
3. In a whip socket, the combination of a cylindrical casing, a slidable gripping member mounted in said casing, springs for normally holding the lower end of said gripping member in an upward and outward position and a sliding lock adapted to en gage the upper end thereof for holding the same in a lowered position substantially as described.
4. In a whip socket, the combination of a casing, of an auxiliary casing extending laterally therefrom and made integral therewith, a vertically sliding gripping member mounted within the said casing, a sliding pawl mounted within said auxiliary casing and the said gripping member adapted to rest below said sliding pawl when in a locked position, and means for holding said gripping member in a raised position when the said pawl has been released, substantially as described.
