To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT W. Goon- PASTURE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Celina, in the county of Clay and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eyelets for Engaging the Bails of Vessels, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an eyelet for engaging the bails of vessels.

The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character comprising a single loop terminating in a pair of inwardly directed points, adapted to be driven through the sides of a wooden pail, as and for the purposes hereinafter set forth.

It is a well known fact that the handles of the ordinary wooden pails now placed upon the market frequently become disengaged from the ears, and the ears become battered in such manner that it is impossible to satisfactorily engage the handle or bail with them again. It is desirable to provide an improved structure adapted to repair these old pails. The device herein shown and described contemplates more than the mere provision of an eyelet having attaching points. The specific construct-ion of this device renders it possible to place the device approximately in position, and to then shift the position of the eyelet with relation to the points, to either one side or the other, so that the pail may be accurately balanced.

Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description which now follows.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a pail, having the invention applied thereto. Fig. 52 is a face view of one of the looped and double pointed ears. Fig. 3 is a side view thereof, and, Fig. 4 is a detailed perspective view of a portion thereof.

Like numerals designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawing.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5 designates a pail, such for instance as the ordinary cedar pails commonly in use. The present invent-ion is made of a single and continuous piece of wire, and is bent to form an intermediate loop or eye 6. Arms 7 extend from each side of said loop said arms terminating in points 8, said points being adapted to be driven through the sides of the pail, as illustrated in Fig. 1, and then clenched upon the inside, if desired. The formation of the transverse arm 7 with a loop consisting of a single bend interposed thereimis of the utmost importance for the reason that this structure permits of the .ready shifting of the loop back and forth. If this loop be grasped by a pair of pliers at the points indicated by the arrows a, in Fig. 2, and said pliers be then given a twisting movement toward the left, the position of the loop will be shifted toward the left, despite the fact that the points 8 have already been-driven into the pail. In other words, this structure renders it possible to place the device approximately in position, then fill the pail with water, and then shift the loops to accurately balance the pail. It will be understood that a bail 9 will be engaged with the loop or eye 6, and that the structure shown in Fig. 1 will be duplicated upon the opposite side of the pail.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that simple and efiicient means are herein provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements shown and described are well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but includes within its purview, such changes as may be made within the scope of the appended claim.

Having described my invention, what I claim is A device of the character described comprising a pair of horizontally disposed prongs lying in substantially the same horizontal plane, and a transverse connecting portion extending between said prongs, said transverse connecting portion formed therein a vertically dis osed single bond complete circular loop w ich lies in the longitudinal plane of said transverse connecting portion.
