shift the carriage from left to right upon the depression of a key located at a suitable point adjacent the bank of keys, there being additional mechanism for first rotating the platen prior to the shifting of the carriage.
A further object is toprovide mechanism of this character Which is compact and durable and which can be used for shifting the carriage any desired distance, the key being returnable to its initial position immediately subsequent to the shifting of the carriage.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

A rack bar 6 extends upwardly from and is pivotally connected to the rear end portion of the bar 1 and has ratchet teeth 7 adapted to move into mesh with the ratchet teeth on a segmental gear 8, a spring 9 being provided for holding the bar 6 normally in engagement with the segment 8. This spring is secured to a bracket 10 adapted to be fastened to the frame of the typewriter and the shaft 11 to which the segment 8 is secured, is mounted for rotation within the bracket 10.

An eccentric 15 is secured to and rotates with the shaft'l and has a spiral working face, that end. of the eccentric nearest the shaft being attached toa flexible band 16. Said band is attached as bv means of a spring 1'7. to one end of a draw bar 18 which is slid ably mounted within a guide 19 attached to the carriage B. One end of this bar is pivotally connected to one arm of a bell crank. lever 20 fulcrumedon the carriage B and carryinga link 21 which is loosely attached to the bell crank lever so as to be capable of a limited universal movement. Said link is pivotally attached to the outer end of an arm 22 fulcruined on one of the trunnions c of the platen C, there being a dog 23 pivotally connected to the outer end of arm 22 and held, as bymeans of a spring 24, normally in engagement with one of-the teeth of the ratchet wheel D.
In using the attachment the. hey-3 .is de-, pressed in the manner hereinbefore described. thus causing bar 1 to move on its pivot 2 and thereby push upwardly on rack bar 6. The teeth 7 on this bar will thus be moved into 11 to rotate. Sector 12 will thus rotate. the gear fiend-shaft 14 will be rotated. Band .16 will therefore be wrapped upon the spiral I workingface of the eccentric 1,5 ,and will p zdl on bar 18. the first portion of A sector 12 is secured to and rotates with 10.5 engagement with the ratchet teeth on the segment and cause the segment and the shaft this movement the bar will shift the bell crank lever 20 so as to cause it to pull on link 21 and arm 22 and therefore cause the pawl 23 to rotate ratchet wheel D and platen C. Upon the completion of the movement of the bell crank lever 20, further pulling of the bar 18 will result in the movement of the carriage B from left to right, the-extent of this movement bein dependent noon the extent of movement of the key 3 s soon as the key 3 is released, sprin 5 draws the bar 1 down into contact wit stop 4 and thus causes the rack 6 to slip over the teeth on the segment 8 until the upper end of the rack is brought below and out of engagement with the segment. The mechanism is then free to return to its normal position as the carriage is fed toward the left with its usual step by step movement. lVhen the carriage reaches the limit of its movement at the left of the machine, the segment 8 reaches its first or initial position where it will again be engaged when the rack bar 6 is pushed upwardly. A spring 25 which is connected to carriage B and to the bell crank lever 20, serves to move the bar 18 and the bell crank lever 20 back to their initial positions when the key is released. Spring 9 holds the teeth 7 in mesh with the ratchet teeth on the segment 8 during the actuation of the segment but permits the rack 6 to shift out of engagement with the segment while said rack is moving downwardly subsequent to the shifting of the carna e.
Xlthough the bar 1 has been shown located at one side of the structure it is to be understood that it can be arranged at either side thereof or two bars maybe used both bein connected by a cross strip or key locate in front of the bank of keys of the typewriter.
Importance is attached to the factthat the band l6 is connected to that end of the eccentric riearest the shaft 14 and it is thus possible to start the shifting movement of the carriage with but little effort, the power necessary increasing as the carriage approaches the limit of its movement at the right side of-the machine. The impulse given to the carriage during the first portion of its shiftin movement serves to offset, to a considerab e extent, the increased force necessary to produce the movement of the carriage during the final stage of the shiftin thereof.
hat is claimed is -1. The combination with a typewriter structure and a shift-able carriage, of a revoluble eccentric having a spiral working face, a flexible connect-ion between the carriage and said working face, a rack bar having ratchet teeth, a segmental ratchet in the path of said teeth but normally out of m esh therewith, key operated means for shlfting the rack bar into mesh with the ratchet to rotate said ratchet, means operated by the rotating ratchet for rotating the eccentric, and means for returning the rack to its normal position and out of mesh with the ratchet upon the release of the key operated means.
2. The combination with a typewriter structure including a shiftable carriage, of a revoluble eccentric having a spiral working face, a flexible connectionbetween said face and the carriage, a segmental ratchet mounted for rotation, means for transmitting motion from the ratchet to the eccentric to wrap the connection upon the eccentric, a rack bar having ratchet teeth normally out of mesh with the ratchet, key operated means for shifting the rack bar into mesh with and for rotating the ratchet, yielding means for holding the rack bar in mesh with the ratchet while the bar is out of normal position, and yielding means for automaticallv returning the bar to normal position and out of engagement with the ratchet upon the release of the key operated means.
3. The combination with a typewriter structure including a shiftable carriage, and a revoluble platen on the carriage, of cooperating means upon the platen and carriage for intermittently rotating the platen, a slidahle element upon the carriage and connected to said means, an eccentric mounted for rotation and having a spiral working face, a flexible'connection between said ec centric and said element, and means for rotating the eccentric to wind the connection thereon, said connection constituting means for first shifting said element relative to the carriage to operate the platen operating mechanism and to then shift the carriage.
4. The combination with a typewriter structure including a shiftable carriage, of an eccentric having a spiral working face, a flexible band connected at one end to the carriage and at its other end to that portion of the working face nearest the axis of the eccentric. key operated mechanism movable in one direction to rotate the eccentric and wind the band thereon, and means for automatically returning said key operated means to its normal position independently of the eccentric.
5. The combination with a typewriter structure including a shiftable carriage, of an eccentric having a spiral working face, a flexible connection between said face and the carriage and adapted to he wound on the eccentric, and key operated means movable in one direction to rotate the eccentric and means for automaticallv shifting said key operated means back to its normal position independently of the eccentric and out of operative relation therewith.
6. The combination with a shiftable typewriter carriage and a platen mounted for rotation thereon, of a member slidably mounted on the carriage, means operated thereby for rotating the platen, an eccentric having a, spiral working face,,a flexible connection bet-ween. saidface and said member, and key operated means shiftahleqin one direction to rotate the eccentric and to trans-- mit motion therefrom through theflexible connectionto said member and carriage to successively rotate the platen and shift the carriage.
7. The combination witha shiftable typewriter carriage and a platen mounted for rotation thereon, of a member slidably mounted on the carriage, means operated thereby for rotating the platen, an eccentric having a. spiral working face, afiexible connection between said facer and said member, key operated means/sliift'able in one direction to rotate the eccentric and to transmit motion therefrom-through the flexible connection to said member and carriage to successively rotate the platen and shift the carriage, and means for automatically return- Copies of this parent may be obtained the platen and engagea-ble by the pawl, a
