To all whom it mag; concern Be it known that l. 'lramiimce llllibBRICH, 22. subject of theKing of l: u Granite City, in the county oil Mefiison and State of Illinois, have inventezi cerlain how and". useful improvements in E'XlQIESlOIP Tables. of which the following is a full, clear} and exact description, reference be ing 'lledl to the accompanying drawings, formilogpain: hereof.
My: invention has relation to improve wants in exlension 'ca'blesgend it consists in.
the novel rle'kails'oi" construction more fully set fol- 1h 1n the specmczision end pointed In the drawings, Fimre l is a top plan of the table shown folder parts being broken away; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is on end elevation of Fig. 1; Fig. l is 2. oop plan of the table shown cxlencled, pails being livfiolzen away; Fig. 5 is a. side GlQVEEllOZf OIE Fig. i; Fi 5 is e. CLGSFkSiBCllOTl of Fig. l token on the line i3-6 of saicl figure; encl'lEig. '2 a botlom plen view of the center section or top showing the chemoereol block, for lloc housing of ecce1itries.
The objecz of my invention is oo construe-ta table which may be collapsed or extended without the removal or replacement of the ordinary leaves forming complements of the usual extension table, the leaves herein fofn'iing permanemqmil of the general construction of the table, and when no?v in service occupying a collapsed position under the main or centei" section 02": the viable.
-' .A further object is to construct 2:. table of I the character cleecribecl which shall. lee simple, contain a minimum viurober of opeir; a 'sing; parts, one i'eeiily manipulated, one poseessingfu'r'the and other e-clvomseges better apparent m ,:1 levelled description of the invention Whifili is as follows:
Referring lo the llmvvings, ll represents e frame provided with legs L, on which the table sec'izions ancl. operating parts eresop posted... The "cable comprises a. rela nvely stationary maxim Oi? oeo'lm? ozc section 1, soul sliding iei miziol sections 01 leaves 2 which. may lmve any convenient contour acoorzling to ll'le elee'lggn to lie in'iipoxciecl to (the table, Disposecl on the uncle h section are pairs parallel or slides 3, the some operotiiigloosely moi freely through dovetail recesses iovmeti eloog" zlze upper edges oi? the lei'miool mewliere oi:
a ry, i'esicling el' sicle of each the l'mme'l the inner.- portions of the 1-e-- speoiive slides being provlcied Willi l'flGlZ- bars 4; The mobbing on the slide secured to one loaf iheoock bar on the corresponding and. opposing slide on the opposite loaf. the racks of each pair of opposing; eliclcs mes-hing "with a pinion'l) interposell between them and. mounted on the from F between the plaice or lnid estrips 6, 6,
enrl she blocks 6 carried by t e frame, ihe parts ii, 6, serving guides for the inner ends of: the slides 3. v To prevent accidental Withdrawal oil, the slicies 3 from their recesses or Ways 1 in the frame F, suit-able arresting shoulders; s are formed. in each slide which cr rcslis the outward. movement of the slide by coming in contact with the terminal well. of the frame.
When. the liable is in its collapsed or folded condition the leaves :2, occupy e. position under the main or center section 1 (Figs. 1., 2, 3); and when the leaves 2, 2, are pulled out from umlei" the section 1, the loll-er must be lowered to bringite upper surface in the common plane of the upoer faces of the So too, must the section 1. be rzilsccl \vlien occasion arises to collapse the table and to slide the leaves under such center section. in the present embodimentof my invention. lilllS is accomplished by the following mechanism:-M0unted in the frame and clisgposod'in parallelism with the slides 3, is o central rocker-bar 7, the
outer terminals of which are provided with operatinghandle-levers 8 8, by winch the bar may be rooms-Li or rotated. Garrled by said. rocker member 7 at convenient points are cams or eocenli-rics 9, 9, which operate freely in recesses-.10 formed for their reception in e chambered block 11 depending from the under side of the table section 1, he ialocklmving o. longitudinal channel 12 formal therein i oi' the'free passage of the the center table section. 1, when the occasion comes to collapse the table.
nThe operation of the table may be described as follows :-Assuming the tableto be collapsed (Fig. 1) that is to say with the leaves 2, 2, beneath the center section 1, (the rocker-member 7 having been, from a previous operation, rocked to cause its cams to elevate the section, to permit the leaves 2, "2, to pass under it), and that it is desired to extend the table.
v By seizing either leaf 2 a bottom hand-hold or socket m being'provided for the purpose)- and pulling the same outwardly, the opposite leaf will be gushed outwardly in the opposite direction y reason of the rack and pinion connections between theslides 3 and pinions When the leaves 2 have been extended their full limit (the'arrest thereof by the shoulders s "determining that point), the operator oscil- {has the -lever 8 (either one being seized fdepnding. at which end of the table the operat-er isstanding) and rocks thebar T in proper direction to depress the eccentrics-9,
thus elevating the section 1 .sufiiciently to allow the leaves 2, 2, to be passed under it. The section 1 elevated, the operator now pushes one of the leaves 2 inwardly, the rack and pinion connection having the effect of drawing the opposite leaf inwardly in the opposite direction, and when both leaves are under the section 1 the operation is complete and we havea collapsed table.
Having described my invention, what I claim isz v A table comprising a frame, a central vertically adjustable top or section mounted on the frame, terminal leaves provided with parallel slides extending under the central section and operating in the frame, means positioned between the slides and in cooperation thcrcwiti for imparting to the leaves a simultaneous movement in opposite directions, a central rocker-liar disposed be tween the slides, cams on said bar operating 111 planes transverse to the slides and on gaging the central section. a block provided with suitable ways or grooves for housing the cams. and means for limiting the outward movement of the leaves.
In testimony whereof I allis: my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
