Specification of Letters '.Patent. Patented Sept. il?, 1912.
This invention relates to lshock vtying devices, vand it has for its object to produce a simple.l durable and. etlicient device by means of which corn shocks maybe quickly i and securely tied.- l
A further vobject of the invention is to provide -a simple and eective device of the class described which may bev conveniently applied to a shock in position for operation and removed after the shock has been tied for use in connection with another shock. y
With these and other ends in View which `will readily'l appear as the nature of the in- ,i which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims..
ln the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simplev andy preferred form. of. the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made 'to the precise structural details therein exhibited,
but that changes, alterationsA and modifica# tions within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired. 4
' in the drawing,-Figure'1 is .a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 vis a'vertical `sectional view of the'same ytaken',axially through the winding shaft, and showing the device applied to a cornshock of which only the upper portion is shown. Fig. 3 is a sectional det-ail view taken on the line 3-3 in Fig.g2. Fig. 4 is a detail view in elevation of a small portion of the device including theupper-end of the base or body of the device. l v
Corresponding parts in the-several'iigures are denoted by like characters of reference. The base or body of the improved tying device consists of an upright 1 of suitable dimensions, said upright being provided near its upper end wit-h a bearing for a shaft 2 having at one endl a crank 3 whereby it may turned, and provided on' the `lies between the npr vided with a. thumb opposite side of the post or upright with a conical pin v4, which latter extends through an arcuate sh-ield or breast plate 5, said lbreast plate being supported on the upright breast plate-to keep the latter from being pressed inward against. the shock orrom being otherwise displaced when the device 1S 1n operation. dpicent to its lower end 'the upright. 1 is provided with a conical pin 8 which is disposed with its axis in approximate parallel relation to the axis of the pin 4. That por ion of the. pin d which ight 1 and the shield 5 constitutes a winding drum with which one end of a tightening, cord9 is permanently connected, said drum portion being also provided with an aperture 10 or other oonvenient means 'for the temporary attachment of the 'treeend of the tightening cord. The shaft 2 is providedv with a ratchet wheel 11 that is engaged' byapawl 12 which is pivoted on the'upright 1; said pafwl being proiece or handle 13 to enableit to be conveniently manipulated by the ope1at0r..,"r y
Secured upon the upper-end of the upright 1 lby means ot straps '14 is .a twine can or receptaclelivthe'bottom of which has an opening 17 that extend/s obliquely' through the 'npper'portion'of'the upright 1 for the passage of the binding twine. Suitably 1ocatedadjacent tothe-outlet of thepassage 17 is a keeperor staple v1'2" constituting a guide for the twine 18. The upper end of "one'of the straps 14 is bent outward from thebody vof'the can or receptacle to form an inclined ear 19 between which" and the body ol the can or receptacle the end of the vtwine may bepwedged and held4 securely after the portion needed to tie ya shock has -been cut oli". ,A twine cutting blade 2O is also suitably attached to the upper end of the upright 1.
vIn the operation of this invention, the conical pins 4 and 8 areldriv'en into the shock. untilthe shield or breast plate 5 abuts u on the latter just below the at whic it is desired to tie the shock. The tightening cord 9, together with the end of the tying cord or twine, is now carried around the shock, and the free-fend of the 110 Y place tying cord or twine is wedged between the.,
ear or catch 19 and the body of therecep-` tacle 15, the free end of the tightening cord being inserted through the aperture 10,-
and thus temporarily connected with the drum portion of the pin 4. The shaft 2 is now rotated to wind thetightening cord on the drum portion nnt-il the shock has been suiciently' tightened, the parts being retained .in position by the pawl 12 engaging'n the ratchet 11. The free end of the twine is now removed from the catch or ear 19,
and the twine is tightly knotted about the shock, the portion of twine required for lting, the shock being'severed by means of t "e blade 20 either before or after tying the knot. The o eration beingl thus completed,l
.25 simple and efficient shock tying device which maybe readily carried from one shock to another and bv the use vof which a shock may be securely tied in'a very rapid and satlsfactory'manner. f
isclaimed 'as new, \is:f'- v ,1. In a shock tying device, an upright, a curved shield. connected with and spaced from said upright,' a shaft supported for ro- Having thus' described the invention, what ture in presence of two wltnesses;
fend a conicalpin extending through the shield and at the other end a crank, that vportion of the conical pin which is located e'tween the shield and-the upright vconstituting a drum, -a tightening cord having 40 one end permanently connected with the drum, said drum being provided with a perforation with which the other end. ofthe tightening cord may be detachably connected, and a shock engaging pin connected with and extending fr'ornthelower end of the upright. 2. In a shock tying device, an upright, a curved shield connected' with and vspaced from said-upright, a shaft supp'ortedfor 50 rotation on the upright and having at one 'end a; conical' pin extending through and provided with a shoulder abutting upon' the ,shield and at the other end a crank, lthat l.portion of the conical pin which is located i- Abetween the shield and the upright con-v j-'st-ituting a drum, a tightening cord having one endl permanently connected 4with' the drum, said drum being provided with a pervvforation with which the other end. of the tightening cord may be det-acha'blyvconnected, and a shock engaging pin connected with and extending fronrthe lower end of the upright.'
