To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARSHALL M. Moon, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Cameron, in the county of Milam and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Got-ton-Compresses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cotton compresses, and its object is to provide a simple, reliable and efficient construction of compress adapted to be operated by compressed air and embodying a minimum number of parts not liable to bind, cause excess friction or get out of order. 7
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference bein had to the accompanying drawings, in W ich:--
Figure 1 is a side elevation of ,a cotton compress constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the compressor cylinder and contained parts. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Figs. 4 and 5 are vertical and horizontal sect-ions on lines 4-4 and 55 of Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the base. Fig. 7 is a similar view of the plunger guide.
In the practical embodlment of my invention, I provide a base board or plate 1 having at one end a pair of branch arms 2 depressed below the plane of the body of the board or plate by ofl'set portions 3. The arms 2 are connected by cross plates 4, formi'ng a base to support a com ressor cylinder or chamber 5. This cylind er or chamber consists 9f a vertical series of rods or bolts 6 having lower threaded ends which pass through openings in the arms 2 and cross plate 4 and provided with nuts 7, whereby the parts-are clamped together. The rods 6 also have upper threaded ends which pass through a head 8 closing the upper end of said compressor cylinder, and provided with nuts 9 to clamp said head in position.
Arranged within the lower ortion of the compressor cylinder is a i e member 10 comprising a cylindrical ody having depending diverging legs 11 formed with angularly bent lower ends engaging the bolts 6 between the arms 2 and plates 4, whereby said guide is firmly fastened in position. The body of the guide is formed with an opening 12 in which is slidably mounted a stem 13 carryingat its upper end a compressor block or head 14,'-between which and the relatively stationary head 8 the cotton or other material is compressed. The stem 13 has a beveled lower end 14' to engage the. beveled end 15 of the short arm of an operating lever 16, which is pivotally mounted at a point between its center and the end portion 15 to rock vertically upon an axle pin 17 carried by a pair of bracket lugs 18 projecting upwardly from the base board orplate 1 adjacent to the oiiset portions 3. By this arrangement the base of the compressor cylinder is arranged below the plane of the board or plate 1 allowing the acting end of the lever to have a full and tree downward movement without interference from the base plate. Secured to the opposite end of the base plate 1 is a series of upright rods or bars 19, forming a guide for the extremity of the longer or power arm of the lever 16. Supported upon these rods is an air cylinder 20, inwhich operates a piston 21, and which may be provided with any suitable construction and arrangement of supply and exhaust ports, whereby the air from any suitable source of compressed air supply may be utilized. The piston 21 is provided with a depending stem 22 connected with a cross head plate 23 having guide grooves receiving the rods on which it is fitted to slide. This cross head plate is coupled by a connecting rod 24 with the adjacent.end c" the lever, whereby upon the downward movement of the piston 21 such end of the lever will be depressed and the short end of the lever raised to move the compressor head 14 toward the head 8 for the urpose of compressing the material. It Will be understood from the foregoing description that the power of the air may be employed to simply operate the head 14 on its working movement, the weight of said head operating toreturn it, the lever, and the piston to normal position by gravit In operatlon, t e material to be compressed is placed in the press chamber between the heads 8 and 14 and air admit-ted to the air cylinder to force the iston downward, whereby the head 14 will e moved upward for compressing action. It will, of course, be understood that the material may be compressed one or more times until it is compressed to the desired density, after which it is bound in any suitable manner and the bale so formed removed.
By the construction described a very Simple and inexpensive form of press is provided which maybe operated at slight ex-.
pense and which is particularly adapted for the use of small growers and others who depress cotton or other material into sire to bales.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. In a cotton press, the combination of a base having supporting portions at diflerent elevations and an oflfset portion connecting the same, a compressor cylinder rising from the lower supporting portion, a compressor head working in said cylinder, an air cylinder mounted upon the higher supporting portion of the base, a piston operating in said. cylinder, bracket members disposed upon the higher portion of the base adjacent 2. In a cotton press, the combination of a base having a depressed end provided with spaced arms, and formed adjacent said depressed endv with upstanding lugs, cross plates extending between said spaced arms, a com ressor chamber including rods or bolts having their lower ends passing through and coupled to said arms and cross plates and carrying at their up er ends a nary compressor head, a guide bracket disposed in said chamber an havi pending arms engaged by the bolts, and clamped between the arms and cross plates, at plunger stem movable in said guide bracket and carrying a compressor head, a lever pivoted to the lugs to provide long and short arms, said short arms being arranged to op erate said plunger stem, an fair cylinder mounted upon the opposite end of the base, a piston operated therein, and connections between said piston and the long arm of the lever.
