JAMES KELLY, OF TULA, MICHIGAN.
-DOOR-SECURING DEVICE.
Loaaeev.
l Specication of Letters Patent.` i Patented Sept. 17, 1912;`
Application filed February 28, 1912. Serial No. 650,383.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs KELLY, a citi* zen of the United States, residing at Tula, in the county of Gogebic and State oflVIichiw gan, have invented new and useful Improve ments in DoorfSecuring Devices, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a device -for securing a door in closed, position relatively to the casing thereof.
'Ihe invention embodies among other features a gripping plate for gripping engage ment with the casing of the door, a locking plate mounted to slide on the gripping plate and vhaving a portion thereof adapted to abutagainst the door and means for retaining the locking plate in rigid position on the gripping plate to retain the mentioned portion of the locking plate in engagement with the door to retain the said door in closed position.
In the further disclosure of the invention,
reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specifb cation in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, showing a locking dog. Fig. 2 is a side elevat-ion showing the retaining plate. Fig. 3 is a horizontal longitudinal sectional view of the device showing the same in applied position on a door and the casing thereof. Fig. 4 is a plan View showing the device in folded position and Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 5 5 in Fig. 4. Y
Referring more particularly to the views, use is made of a gripping plate 10, preferably formed of an integral piece of material and having a tongue 11 struck therefrom and extending laterally thereto at the fo`rward end of the gripping plate, the mentioned forward end of the gripping plate, in front of the tongue 11 constituting a head 12. Mounted to slide on the gripping plate 10 is a locking plate 13, preferably formed o-f an integral piece of material having edges thereof bent over the gripping plate to form toothed anges 14, the mentioned flanges being bent so that the same will form guides for the gripping plate to permit of easily sliding the locking plate upon the gripping plate. A locking dog 15 is mounted to swing on the gripping plate 10 adjacent the rear end thereof and hetween the toothed flanges 14, the forward` end of the said dog terminating `in bifur` cated projecting members 16 arranged so .2 Mounted to swing on the forward end ot` the locking plate 13 is an abutting plate 17 having mounted to swing on the outer end thereof a retaining plate 18 terminating at the rear end in a reduced securing lug 19,` adapted for insertion in a Slot 20 formed in the locking plate 13.
In the use of my device in connection with a closure 21 and the casing 22 thereof,` when the closure 21 is in open position, th,"
tongue 11 is pressed into the casing 22 `as shown in Fig. 3 so that the head 12 will lie against the edge of the casing, after which the closure is moved into closed position, the head 12 being then interposed between the closure 21 and the casing 22. The locking plate 13 is now slid forwardly on the gripping plate 10 until the abutting plate 17 lies against the inner face of the closure 21, the securing lug 19 of the retaining plate being extended within the slot 20 of the locking plate, after which the locking dog 15 is swung so that one of the projections 16 thereof will engage the teeth of one of the toothed flanges 14, thus retaining the locking plate in rigid position on the gripping plate 10 so that the closure 21 'can not be opened from the outside and will thus be retained in locked position.
'Ihe device described is preferably made of a tough metal that can be stamped to form the various parts mentioned and the device is preferably made sufficiently small to lit in the vest pocket so that the same 'can be conveniently carried on the person.
For `this reason when the device is not in use, the retaining plate 18 can be moved outwardly from the locking plate so that the securing lug 19 will be moved outwardly from the slot 420 and the retaining plate is then swung rearwardly to lie along side the locking plate, the abutting plat-e 17 being also adapted to lie adjacent the locking plate when the device is in folded position as shown in Fig. 4.
I claim 1. In a door securing device, the combination with a gripping plate, of aY tongue struck from the forward end of the gripping plate and extending laterally thereto, a loclthe gripping plate and adapted for engagement with the teeth on the said flanges, an abutting plate mounted to swing on the forward end of thelocking plate and a retaining plate mounted to swing on the outer end of the abutting plate and adapted for removable engagement with the said locking plate to retain the said abutting plate in abutting'position.
2. In a door securing device, the combination with a gripping plate, of a tongue struck from the gripping plate and eXtending laterally thereto, a looking plate mounted to'slide on the gripping plate, toothed flanges formed on the locking plat-e, a locking dog'mounted to swing on the gripping f plate and terminating at the free end thereof in projections adapted to yengage the teeth of the said flanges, an abutting plate mounted to swing on the locking plate, a retaining plate mounted to swing on the abutting plate and a securing lug formed on the retaining plate and adapted to extend into a slot in Copies of kthis patent may be obta'i'ned for the saidlocking plate to retain the abutting "plate in abutting pOSOn' 3. In a door securing device, the combination with a .gripping plate, of a tongue eX- tending laterally therefrom, the forward end of the gripping plate terminating in a head for' insertion between the closure and the casing thereof, the mentioned tongue being adapted to extend into the casing, a locking plate mounted to slide on the gripping plate,
toothed flanges formed on the locking'plate, means mounted on thegripping plate and adapted to engage the toothed flanges to retain the locking plate in rigid engagement with the gripping plate, an abutting plate mounted to swing on the locking plate and adapted to abut against the said closure and a retaining plate mounted to swing on the abutting plate and having the free end thereof for engagement with the said lock ing plate to retain the abutting plate in abutting position.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
