Be it known that I, O'i'ro Duns'rnwi'rz, a citizenv of the United States, residing at Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Feeding Apparatus, of which .the `followmg isv a specification.
My invention relates to improvement in feeding apparatus to form a part of, or an adjunct applicable to, commuting mills,4
for intermittently feeding thereto the material to be comminuted in varying quantities regulated by the requirements of the mill during operation.
My object is toproyide apparatus of this class, of a simple and improved construction rendering it peculiarly desirable for the general purpose stated, though, I have devised it, more especially, for co'peration` with an ore-stamping mill, and thereforey hereinafter describe it m` that particular connection.

The apparatus, a"s, is usual in the case of stamp-mill feeders, is mounted, in suspend-f ed relation, upon a track 8, to be moved thereon into and out of operative position,

The apparatus, as illustrated, has an up-i.
per horizontal yoke-frame 9 to which is riveted the upper portion 10 of a chute 0r y hopper, the lower end-portion of whichlis formed-byA acasting 11, fitting at its-upper end around the part 10 and riveted thereto. The part or -ca sting 11 is formed with a hollow sleeve or shaft-bearing 12 and curved deecting or guiding plates 13, 1 4, forming vtogether the wallsof a discharge-chute.
The under -face of the part or casting 11 is smooth and inclined at an angle 'of about 12 from the l.horizontal plane, and at a right angle tothe bearing-sleeve 12. Fitting and rotating against the under face ofl the casting 11 is a feed-plate or disk 15 secured to the lower end of a shaft 16 which rotates in the bearing-sleeve 12. The feedplate is held loosely against the under face of the part 11, by means of a collar 17 locked by a wedge-key 17a to the shaft 16 Aand rotating upon the upper endof the sleeve 12. Keyed to the-upper end-portion of the shaft 16 is a disk 18, and for additional security the `upper end of the shaft is threaded and provided with a split locking-nut 19 which is tightened in position by a nut-bolt 20. The disk 18 has a circumferential flange or clutch-rim 21.
Mounted at one end in a bearing 22 on the sleeve 12. is a horizontal rock-shaft 23 passing through a bearing 24 in a wall of the part 11, and held against longitudinal movement by `a collar 25. Keyed to the shaft'adjacent to the bearing- 22 is an arm 26, and

keyed to the shaft beyond the bearing 24 is an upwardly-extending arm 27. The arm '26, shaft 23 and arm 27 form a bell-crank lever fulcrumed at the bearings 22, 24. In
the upper kend of the arm 27 is a socket 28 fitted in one end with a shoe or wearingblock 29 having perforated ears 30 at which it is bolted in place, as shown.
The numeral 31 designates an intermittent gripping or clutching lever having a lgforked end formed by the downwardly extending prongs 32, 33 which embrace the rim 21A loosely when the/lever 31 extends radially with relation to the shaft 16 andgrip the rim when turned out of radial` line with the shaft. Fastened to the under side of the lever 31 is an angle-piece or keeper 34 which extends under the disk 18. At its end opposite the rim 21, the lever 31 rests in .the socket 28 on the arm 27. When in said position the upper end lof* the hopper-portion 10 is beneath the discharge-end ofthe ore-supplying bin and the armr26 is caused to engage with the lower end of a plunger or tappet-rod 47. The rod 47, as usual, is in the path of one of the tappets of the stampmill to descend with one of thestamps.
Itis desirable, in practice, to maintain a` substantially uniform b edv of ore in the stamp-mill mortar and the distance of plunge of the stamp or stamps isnaturall regulated by the thickness of the ore-be Thus, to maintain the-bed uniform the feed of preliminarily-crushed -ore to the mortar should .be in accordance with the level to which the stamp or stamps drop in each movement. In operation, as the tappet-rod 47`descends with one of the stamps, it swings the arm 26 of the bell-crank lever downward, a distance governed by the level to which the stamp descends, and turns the spring 45. In theV consequent swinging of the arm 27 its shoe 29 strikes against the clutch-lever 31, turns the latter against the resistance of the spring 36 out of radialline withthe shaft 16 and causes its pron 32, 33 to grip and then turn the rim 21 an consequently the disk 18, shaft 16 and plate 15,. In the rise of the tappet-rod 47 the bellcrank lever is returned to normal position, permitting the clutch-lever to rst rele-ase its grip upon the rim andthen return tc normal position under the action of the spring 36. -The ore fed -from the ore-bin into the hopper rests upon the feed-plate 15,

My improved feeding apparatus dispenses with gears, which are considered objection# able. in an apparatus of thischaracter', and is little subject to wear. In case of wear upon the upper face of the feed-plate- 15 its supporting shaft 16 vvmay be keyed some- .what higher in the bearing-collar 17, and' one orimore of the washers 50, shown interposed between the disk 18 and the disk-seating shoulder on the shaft lr6, may be removed to adjust the disk to `the proper level relative to the lever 31.-`
' What'I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is-..
1. In a feeding apparatus of the character described, the combination withv a rotary feed-plate on which the material to befed 1s supported, a relatively stationary` delate, a vertical shaft to the lower portion of) plate is secured, anl annular clutch-rim fixed to the upper portion of said shaft in a plane parallel with the feed plate, a swing,

2. In a feeding apparatus of the character described, the combination with a rotary feed plate on which the material to be fedis supported, a` relatively stationary deiiectoiextending over said plate, a vertical shaft to the lower portion of which the feed plate is secured, a disk having an annular which the feed f clutch-rim extending therefrom, said disk being secured to the upper portion ,of said' shaft in a planeparallel' with the lfeed-plate,
a swinging lever provided with a laterally v extendingrigid pair of gripping members adapted to'extend on each side of the annular rim, a keeper extending from theL 'lever intocontact with the disk to hold the movement to release the rim, and means for actuating the lever.
3. In a feeding apparatus of the character described, the combination' with a 'rotary feed-plate on which the material to be fed is supported, a relatively stationary deflector'extending over said plate, a vertical shaft to the'lower portion of which the feed plate is secured, an annular clutch rim fixed to the upper portion of ysaid shaft in a plane parallel with the feed plate, a swinging spring returned clutching-member having rigid gripping members coperating with said rim to positively grip and advance the rim when moved in one direction and in its return movement under the action of its. spring to release the rim, and means for moving the lever intermediately against the resistance of its spring.

In an ore feeding apparatus for stamp mills, the combination with a rotary feed plate on which the material to be fed is. supported, a relatively stationary deflector extending over said plate, a vertical shaft to the lower portion of which the feed plate is secured, an annular clutch rim fixed to the upper portion of said shaft in a plane parallel with the feed plate, a swinging lc)lutching lever having rigid gripping memers coperating with said rim to positively grip and advance the rim when moved in one dlrection and 1n its return movement to release the rlm, and actuatmg means for the clutching lever comprising a bell crank lever with means for its connection 1n operative relation to a stamp mill.
5. In an ore-feeder for stamp-mills, the combination, with a tappet-rod actuated by the stamp-mill, of a rotary feed-plate on which the ore to be fed is supported, a
relatively stationary deflector extending over said late, an annular clutch-rim in fixed relation to, and in a plane parallel with, said plate, a clutch-lever having a pair of clutch-rim receiving prongs at which it is supported at its inner end, said prongs operating to positively clutch said rim when said lever is turned in one direction relative to a line drawn through the axis of the said rim, a bell-crank lever having an arm in the path of said tappet-rod and an arm loosely engaging the'outer end of said clutch-lever, and a clutch-lever return-spring connected with the clutch-lever between the ends thereof, all constructed to operate substantially as described. w
