Description

ihrte gime @met @Win12,
Letters Patent No. 103,867, dated June 7 1870. n
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHING- HADLES TO CUTLERY.
Ihe Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making par: of the same 'lo all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osErH W. GARDNER, of Shelburne Falls, inthe county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Table-Knives and other Cutlery to their Handles; and I do hereby declare tlle'following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making a part of this specification, in which- A Figure 1 represents aview of a completed knife; Figure 2 represents a section through the same; and
Figure 3 represents one of thetached from the knife, interior.
Similar letters, where they occur in the separate figures, refer to like parts in all of the drawings.
This invention relates to a very simple, cheap, and
cheek-pieces deand turned over to show itsA ecient way of uniting a short-tanged knifev or fork to its handle in a firm and nnyielding manner.
To enable others skilled in-the art to make and use my invention,- I will proceed to describe the same, with reference to the drawings.
The blade A of the knife, or shank of a fork, is made with a short dovetailed tang, a., and with a small tapering piece,A c, projecting rearward from the tang.
The handle B, made of any of the known material used for the purpose, has a recess formed in it to receive this tapered portion c.
Two side or cheek-pieces, C C, are then prepared, as more distinctly seen in iig. 3, with a shoulder, as at e, so as to lie up close to or into a recess in the handle, 'and with a dovetail recess at j, to receive the dovetailed tanga.
What I claim,- as a device for fastening vknives andother articles to their handles, is
In combination with -the dovetailed tang a, the sirnilarly-recessed s ide or cheek-pieces C C for holding themselves and the blade or fork to the handle, by suitable rivets, as described and represented.
, J. W. GARDNER.`
