SIDE BOARD LOCK.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 24, 1911.

Swuwwtoz wi twe/aozo I g g 01 W P' EDWARD CRAIG, or ALBION, ILLINOIS.
SIDE-BOARD LOCK.
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD CRAIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albion, in the county of Edwards and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Side-Board Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to side board locks for wagon bodies, and has for its object to provide a lock of simple structure which may be applied to the standards usually mounted upon the bolster of a running gear for the purpose of engaging the members applied to the outer surface of the side board for holding the same effectually in position with relation to the standard and the bottom board.
Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which;
Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view through the portion of the wagon, showing the application of my improved lock for the side board. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof partly in section. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawing the lock includes a member 1 which is adapted to be applied to the outer surface of a side board indicated at 2. This member is provided at a point betweenits ends and at its outer side with a socket 3 having at its lower portion a shoulder or lip 4. Below the said lip 1 the member 1 is provided at its outer portion with a curved shoulder 5. At its upper end the member 1 is provided with an abrupt shoulder 6.
To the side of the standard 7 is attached a plate 8 having upon its side a gudgeon 9. A member 10 is pivoted upon the gudgeon 9 and is provided with a cam end 11 adapted at times to engage the shoulder 5 and force the member 1 in a downward direction. A pawl 12 is pivoted to the member 10. The

said pawl may be pivoted to the side of the member 10 or may be pivoted in a recess 13 provided at the inner side of the said member 10. A bolt 14 is passed longitudinally through the gudgeon 9 and a washer 15 is located upon the outer portion of the said a bolt and bears against the side of the pivoted member 10. The bolt 14 also passes transversely through the standard 7 and is provided at its opposite end with any suitable securing device, as for instance a nut as s shown. At its free end portion the pivoted member 10 is provided with a shoulder 16 adapted to fit snugly over the shoulder6. At its outer side the member 10 is provided with a depression 17 which is adapted to receive the intermediate portion of a bail 18 which is pivoted to the member 1.
By this arrangement it will be seen that when the side board 2 is positioned against the standard 7 and the free end of the member 10 is swung in an upward direction and the free end of the pawl 12 is engaged with the lip 4: that the said pawl will draw the standard 7 and the side board 2 to which it is attached in a downward direction so that the lower edge of the said. side board will be firmly seated against the bottom of a wagon body, or against the bolster which supports the standard 7. At the same time the eccentric portion 11 of the member 10 will bear down against the upper side of the shoulder 5 and force the member 1 in a downward direction. When the member 10 is completely closed against the member 1 the shoulder 16 of the member 10 will fit snugly over and upon the shoulder 6 of the member 1. Then thebail 18 is swung in a downward direction so that its intermediate portion enters the depression 17 provided at the outer side of the upper portion of the member 10. Thus the parts are effectually locked in position. To remove the side board from against the standard 7 the operation above described is reversed.
Therefore it will be seen that a simple and an effective mechanism is provided for securely holding the side board of a wagon body in position with relation to a standard mounted upon a bolster and that the parts may be easily and quickly manipulated for the purpose of removing the side board.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In combination with a side board and a standard, means for locking the side board with relation to the standard comprising a.
member adapted to be applied to the outer surface of the sideboard, said member having a socket provided with a lip, a plate adapted to be applied to the standard, a sec- 7 end member pivotally mounted upon the plate and having a hooked pawl adapted to enter the socket of the first mentioned memher and engage the lip thereof, and means" lip, said member having below the said lip a curved exserted portion, a plate adapted to be applied to the standard, a second member pivoted upon the plate andha-ving a hooked pawl adapted to enter the socket and engage the lip, the said second member having an eccentric end adapted to engage the exserted port-ion upon the first mentioned member and force the same in a downward direction, and means carried by the first mentioned member for engaging the second mentioned: member and holding the same in closed position with relation thereto. 3. In combination with a side board and a standard, means for locking the same comprising a member adapted to be applied to, the outer surface of the side board and hav- .ing at its outer side a socket provided at its lower end with a .lip, said member having at its outer side below the said socket a curvedexserted portion which is provided at its upper end with a shoulder, a plate adapted to be applied to the side of the standard and having a gudgeon, a second member pivoted upon the gudgeon, 'means for holding the second member in position upon the gudgeon, a pivoted pawl carriedgaging the free end portion of the second i mentioned member and holding the same in closed position against the first mentioned member. 7
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
