CHAUNCEY BASSETTQOF KEWANEE, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 103,829, dated Jane 7, 1870.
The Schedule referred to in those Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Te all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, GHAUNCEY BAssETT', of Kewanee, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printers7 Wood-Type Cabinets; and I hereby deelare the following to' be a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a portion of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, with one leaf drawn out.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of one leaf.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of one leaf` and the guide for sliding it into the case.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures. The nature of this invention relates to improve ments in printers wood-.type cabinet; and
The invention consists in a box or case of suitable size and dimensions, provided with arrangement-s for holding leaves vertically and side by side, holding woodtype, and allowing said leaves to be drawn out and swung round, with either face to the front, when required, or slid into the case out of the way and the dust, thus econoniizing room and furnishing a convenient type-case at the same time.
It also consists in the arrangement of a solid cleat or bar below the type, and a movable one above them for holding them securely and allowing them to be easily taken out when desired.
To enable others to understand the construction and operation of my invention,I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawing.
Letter A represents a rectangular box, which may be of any suitable dimensions, one side being left open.
Letter H represents slats or pieces attached to the bottom and top of box A, inside, and so arranged as to leave spaces or grooves running back between them, and
r represents partitions.
Letter B represents leaves for holding the type, one of which is shown at lig. 1, drawn out.
These leaves have tongues, D, on their upper and lower edges, which tongues t into and slide in the grooves between the slatsH.
Letter E represents an upright bar, with projections C Gat the upper and lower ends.
Between these projections C C the leaf B is pivoted, and these projections C C slide in the grooves between the slats H, the slats H being grooved on their sides, as shown at iig. 3, and pins J being placed\in the bar E, which serve as stops, when the leaves B are drawn 4round to the right or the left hand, to bring the type forward.
Letter n represents cleats or slats, attached to the 4leaves B, on which the types S rest, and over which they project slightly, for convenience in taking out.
Letter e representscleats or slats also. 4
rlhese slats e are grooved on the under side so that their outer edge may extend over the top of the types S and hold them in place, and are attached to the leaf vB by means of springs or hinges ton their upper side, so they may be slightly raised in inserting or withdrawing type.
Anynumber ot' these cases desired may be arranged along the side of a room, and, the type being put in place, any leaf may be drawn out, as desired, and swung round either to the right or left, in either case bringing the type fairly to view, and, when pushed into the case, occupying the least possible Space.
Having thus described my invention,
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The slats n and e and springs or hinges t, in combination with pivoted sliding leaves B and cabinet A, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. 'lhe arrangement of cabinet A, constructed as sho'wn and described, with divisions lr, bars E, with projections C G', grooved guides H, pivoted slides or leaves B, furnished with slats a and e, and springs or hinges t, and handles a, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
Subscribed at Galesburg, Illinois, this 18th day of June, 1869.
O. BASSETT. W'itnesses:
P. R. RronARns, J. B. HARSH.
