BASE-BALL SCORING DEVICE.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, VVILLIs P. CARRUTH- Ens, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Oberlin, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Base-Ball Scoring Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to pocket devices for indicating the relative standing of baseball teams in a league, and the principal object of the same is to provide a pocket indicator by means of which the percentage of victories may be readily changed according to the daily scores so that an absolutely accurate record may be had and retained in a pocket so that the same may be accessible when desired.

In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above, it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, preferred and practical embodiments of which are shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a top plan View, partly in sec tion, of the improved indicator. Fig. 2 is a part section and part side elevation taken substantially on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail fragmentary view of a modification of the invention.

Referring to said accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 designates the flat casing of the improved score indicator which is preferably rectangular in shape and is provided with a partition 2 that divides the interior of the casing into a narrow compartment 3 and a wide compartment 4. The cover 5 of the casing is provided with a longitudinal row of regularly-spaced slots 6 which are formed in the cover over compartment 3. Said cover is also provided with three longitudinal rows of openings 7, 8, 9 which are arranged over compartment 4. It will be observed that the openings 6, 7, 8 and 9 are all formed so that they iare outwardly. By means of this arrangement, a superior and uninterrupted view is given of the counters beneath. Furthermore, this Haring arrangement also prevents the throwing of any shadow-on the counters or indicators. The openings of said rows 7, 8, 9 correspond Specification of Letters Patent.

in number and are in alinement with the slots 6. Casing 1 has its side adjacent compartment 3 provided with a longitudinal recess 10 and the bottom of said casing beneath compartment 4 and at a point in alinement with the openings 9, is also provided with a longitudinal recess 11. A horizontal shaft 12 is journaled in the side walls of compartment 3 below each slot 6, said shafts l'n'ojecting into recess 10 and provided with finger grips 13 inthe form of a milled disk by means of which said shafts may be manually rotated. Each shaft has a drum 14 fast thereon, the surface of which contains the names of the baseball teams, said names being arranged on the drums so that by rotating the drums the name of any one team may be viewed through the slot 6 over the same.

The bottom of the casing is provided withl three rows of vertical shafts 15, 16 and 17, said shafts corresponding in number with the rows of openings, 7, 8, 9. The shafts 17 each project through the bottom of casing 1 and enter recess 11 and are provided with a finger grip 18 by means of which the same may be manually rotated. The upper end of shafts 17 have a disk 19 thereon, the periphery of which is provided with two teeth 20. Said disks rotate across openings 9 and are provided with numerals running from 0 to 9 which may be viewed oneat a time through said openings. Shafts 16 at their upper ends carry two disk sections 21-22. Disks 21 are provided with twenty peripheral teeth 23 which are engaged by teeth 2O of disks 19. Said disks 21 rotate across openings 8 and are provided with numerals running from 0 to 9 which may be singly viewed through said openings 8. Disks 22, which are below disks 21, are provided with two teeth 24 on their peripheries which are engaged by teeth 20 of disks 19. Shafts 15 at their upper ends carry two disk sections 25-26. Disks 25 are provided with two peripheral teeth 27 which are engaged by the teeth 23 of disks 21. Said disks 25 rotate across openings 7 and are provided with numerals running from O to 9 which may be singly viewed through said openings. Disks 26 are provided with twenty peripheral teeth 28 which are engaged by the teeth 24 of disk 22.

It will now be noted that because of the arrangement of the numeral bearing disks so that some of these disks lie close to the are close to the face of the casing. The improved indicator is arranged' Jfor showing at a glance the relative standing of the teams of an eight club league, and from the foregoing description it will be understood that drums 14: may be rotated so the clubs may be arranged in a vertical row according to their standing. It will also be seen that the three rows of openings 7, 8, 9 provide three openings in alinement with each opening 6 so that the percentage of each club may be displayed, the disks 19, 21 and 25 which carry the percentage numer als being in meslied engagement so that they may be readily rotated to indicate different percentage numerals in accordance with the changes in the standingr of the clubs due to games won or lost. For example, it will be seen that the disks 19 being provided with but two teeth, and the disk 21 being provided with twenty teeth, disks 19 will be compelledy to make one complete rotation to cause disks 21 to move one figure, and in a like manner disks 21 will be compelled to make one complete rotation to move disk 25 one figure.

In F ig. 4L, a modification of the invention is suggested which consists in employing fiat disks 29 in place ot the drums 14. Said i disks are mounted on the shaft 30 which extends into a longitudinal base recess 31 ot' t bottom 1 and are equipped with a finger grip 32. In this form of the invention, the

Vhat I claim as my invention is In a device of the kind described, a casing plurality of series of outwardly flaring openings, said casing being further provided with a plurality of recesses, one of said recesses extending throughout the length of one side of the casing and the remaining recess extending throughout the length of the bottom of said casing, a series of indicators held to rotate within said casing adjacent the sid-e recesses and beneath one series of openings, a series ofthumb nuts operatively `connected to said indicators and lyingwholly within said side recesses wherebyT the heads of said nuts are prevented from contact with external objects, a plurality of series of counters each having numerals thereon adapted to show through one of the remaining openings, said counters alternately overlapping` and underlying each other whereby certain of said counters lie close to the front of said casing and the remainder of said counters are more remote therefrom, and a series of thumb nuts operatively connected to said.` counters and lying wholly within the recesses in the back of the casing, whereby said casing may be laid upon an object without said thumb nuts coming in contact therel with.
