Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 10, 1912.
Application filed March 2, 1912. Serial No. 681,218.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH KILrrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at I-Iouston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pouncing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
-My `invention relates to new and useful improvements in pouncers, and has more particular relation to such devices as are adapted to be used for removing the nap from the rim of an unfinished hat and for pouncing said rim.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described, which will automatically remove the nap from each side of an unfinished' hat rim and will produce on said rim a perfect finish on each side.
lVit-h the above and other objects in view, the invention has particular' relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an exampleI of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete device. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the block driving mechanism. Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic fragmentary View of the block securing means. Fig. 5 is an enlarged side elevation of the bearing adjusting mechanism, and Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional side elevation thereof taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 5.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures, the numeral 1 refers to the frame work of the machines, which is supported 'upon suitable legs 2. Extending upwardly from the frame work are two bearing supports 3, 3, by which are carried the bearings 4, 4 and 5, 5, the former ofwhich are stationary and the latter of which are vertically adjustable as will be hereinafter set forth. Rotatably mounted in the bearings 4, 4 is the shaft 6, one end of which carries a driving pulley 7 which' is rigidly mounted thereon and the other end of which carries a rigidly mounted friction cylinder 8, which is covered with some suit-- able abrasive surface, such as sand paper.'
Mounted in the bearings 5, 5 is the rotatable support is provided with a block 12 slid-r l able lengthwise through said square holes.
Secured toeach of the bearings 5, 5 is a rod 13 whose upper end is bifurcated, the fingers thereof embracing the blocks 12 between the bearings 11, 11 and a pin 14 is carried by said fingers which passes through an inclined laterally extending slot in each block 12, the slot of one block having an inclination the opposite the slot ofthe other block. I have also provided a hand wheel 15 having a laterally extending threaded socket member 16 and connected to the inner end of each block 12 is a rod 17 whose free ends are threaded into the socket members 16. By ay manipulationof the hand wheel 15, the blocks 12 may be forced apart `or drawn together, which movement will operate, by reason of the inclination of said slots, to elevate or lower the rods 13 and the bearing members 5, 5 carried thereby and the friction cylinder 10 will thus be adjust4 ed toward or from its co-actingcylinder 8, so that the space between said cylinders may be adjusted to accommodate the machine to hat rims differing in thickness.
The shaft 6 is provided with a pulley 18 rigidly mounted thereon and which is alined with a rigidly mounted pulley 19 carried by the shaft 9 and rotation is transmitted from the former pulley to the latter by means `of a belt 20 whose slack may be regulated by means of an idler pulley 21.
Rotation is imparted to shaft 6 through the pulley 7 from any suitable motor, not shown, and thence to the pulley 19 through the said belt 20, and by means of this mechanism to the friction cylinders 8 and 10. The shaft 6 also carries a bevel gear wheel 22 rigidly mounted thereon which meshes with a corresponding bevel gear wheel 23 rigidly mounted on one end of the shaft 24, rotatable in the bearing 25 carried by the ymainframe work 1.4 The other end of shaft 24 carries the rigidly mounted gear wheel 2G which meshes with a similar gear wheel 27 rigidly mounted on vone end of transverse shaft 28, which is rotatable in suitable bearings 29, 29 carried by the frame wo-rk of the machine. This shaft 2S carries a worm gear 30 which is slidable thereon, but which is keyed thereto so as to be rotatable therewith. This worm gear meshes with a corresponding worm gear 3l rigidly mounted on a vertical shaft and these gears are held in mesh by means of a bearing member 33, which is slidable upon the shaft 28. rlhis bearing is provided with a transverse bearing 34 through which the shaft 28 extends and with two vertically alined bearings and 3G, in which the shaft operates and said shaft 32 also operates in a bearing 37 slidably mounted in a slot in the table 38, which is supported by the main frame 1.
The upper end of the shaft 32 carries a detachable block 39, which is provided to receive the hat 40 and the block is so positioned that the rim of said hat will be alined with the space between the friction cylinders 8 and 10. Secured to the bearing member 33 is a cable 4l which passes over a pulley 42 suspended from the main frame and the free end of this'cable carries a weight 43 which operates to normally hold the hat rim between the friction cylinders, but allows the bearing member 33 to have free play on shaft 2S.
The hat block 39 is detachably secured to the upper end of shaft `32 by means of a mechanism which will now be described. A rod 44 extends lengthwise through said shaft 32 and within the lower end of said shaft and supporting said rod is aV coil spring 45, whose upper end is secured to the rod and whose lower end is secured to the shaft. To the upper end of shaft 82 and on each side is pivoted two dogs 46 and 47 which operate in suitable slots on each side of the shaft and whose upper ends carry laterally extending lugs 4S, and 49, which normally project from opposite sides of said shafts and into corresponding recesses in the block 39 and holds said block on the shaft 32, the upper end of the rod 44 is enlarged into a wedge-like knob 50, which wedges between the dogs 46 and 47 from above and normally holds said lugs against withdrawal from their recesses within the block. The coil spring 45 operates against the rod 44 and normally tends to hold said knob closely wedged between said dogs. When it is desired to remove the block, the rod 44 is forced upwardly and the wedge-like enlargement 5l thereof is forced between the free ends of the dogs 46 and 47 and the lugs 48 and 49 thereby withdrawn from their recesses in said block and the block is thus disengaged from the shaft 32.
While I have shown the preferred form of my device I hereby reserve the right to change the mechanical structure thereof so long as l do not depart from the principle of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
`What l claim is 1. A device of the character described including a suitable supporting frame and a plurality of rotatable abrading members carried thereby, a rota-table hat support also carried by the frame and positioned so that the rim of the hat carried by said support will project between the said abrading members, a means for rotating said abrading members and a means for rotating said hat support, and a means tending to hold the hat support yieldably against said abrading members.
2. A device of the character described including a suitable supporting frame and two rotatable abrading members carried thereby and alined one above the other and spaced apart, means for adjusting said abrading members toward and from each other, a rotatable hat support adjustable toward and from said abrading members and positioned so that the rim of the hat carried thereby will be alined with the space between said abrading members, a mechanism for holding the hat support yieldably against the abrading members, a driving means for rotating the abrading members and a driving mechanism operatively connected with said driving means and with said hat support and transmitting rotation from the former to the latter.
3. A device of the character described including a suitable supporting frame and rotatable abrading members alined one above the other thereon, an adjusting mechanism connected with one of said abrading members whereby it may be adjusted toward and from the other of said abrading members, a rotatable hat support adjustable toward and from said abrading members and so positioned that the rim of the hat carried thereby will extend between said members, a means holding said hat support yieldably against the abrading members, a mechanism for driving said abrading members and a means operatively connected with said mechanism and also with said hat support and transmitting rotation from the former to the latter.

A device of the character described, including a suitable supporting frame and a plurality of rotatable abrading members adapted to rotate the same direction carried thereby, a rotatable hat support also carried by the said frame and so positioned that the rim of the hat carried by said support will project between the said abrading members, a means for ro-tating said abrading members and a means for rotating said hat support and a means tendingto yieldably hold said hat support against said abrading members.
5. A device of the character described, including a suitable supporting frame and two rotatable abrading members carried thereby and alined one above the other, means for adjusting said abrading members toward and from each other, a rotatable yieldable hat support adjust-able toward and from said abrading members, means for rotating said abrading members in the same direction and means for rotating said rotatable hat support.
6. A device of the character described, including a suitable supporting trame and two rotatable abrading members carried thereby and alined one above the other and spaced apart, means for adjusting said abrading members toward and from each other, means for rotating said abrading members in the same direction, a rotatable hat support yieldably held toward said abrading members and so positioned that the hat rim carried thereby will be alinedl with the space between said abrading members, a mechanism for holding the hat support yieldably against the abrading members, a driving means for rotating the abrading members and a driving mechanism operatively connected with said driving means and with said hat support and transmitting rotation from the former to the latter.
7. In a device of the character described, the combination with a supporting frame, a plurality of abrading members carried thereby, a rotatable hat support also carried by the frame and positioned so that the rim of the hat carried by said support will project between the said abrading members, a means for rotating said abrading members, a means for rot-ating said hat support, of a mechanism comprising a plurality of dogs located within a cylindrical shaft, said dogs adapted to be either projected or withdrawn from said cylindrical shaft by means ot' a doubly wedged shaped rod adapted to hold said hat support on said shaft and a manual means for releasing the same.
8. In a device of the character described, a suitable supporting frame and a plurality of abrading members carried thereby, a r0- tatable hat support also carried by said trame and so positioned that the rim of the hat carried by said support will project between the said abrading members, a means for rotating said abrading members and a means for rotating ,said hat support, said means, last mentioned, being provided with dogs adapted to hold said hat support rigid with relation to the means for rotating the same and means for releasing said dogs from their hold upon the said hat support.
