' IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR CASTING TY'YPE.'
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 10,377, dated January 3, 1854.
To all whont it may` concern.-
Beit known that I, GHARLEs MLLER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Casting Type; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference'being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specilicatiomin which- Figure l is a perspective viewof a machine constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan or top viewof the cam and mechanism combined therewith for openingthe mold. Fig. Sis a side view of the lever for tilting the matrix.

The first part of my invention consists in placing the mold below yits aXisv of oscillation, instead of in its usual position above. By this change of position, if the -mold is hung at a proper distance from the nippleV or .opening through which it receives the melted metal, its tendency toward its center of gravity will act in opposition to the momentum it acquires in its oscillation, and will thus reduce the force of its concussion against the nipple,
which is highly injurious to the machine, and
also the shock at the end of its movement from the nipple. This change of position admits of a reduced movement of the mold `from the nipple and a'reduced degree of opening to be given to release the type from the mold and allow it to fall out, as when released no obstruction is o'ered to it. The decreased movement of the mold does not give it so great a momentum, and this, also, tends to reduce the concussion. The decreased opening of the mold reduces the friction of its sides and the consequent wear.
The second part of my invention consists in a simple combination of mechanism for opening the mold. i y
The third-part of my invention consists in certain simple means of tilting the matrix.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

The oscillating arms and the mold .are substantially similar to those of other machines,`oue portion, C, of the mold being at= tached immovably yto one of the oscillating arms, and the othery portion, .0', being suspended on a pivot, b, on the other arm in such a way that, while it oscillates with thev arm and the other part, G, ofthe mold, it is'capa- -ble of Loscillating ina direction at right angles thereto for the purpose of opening t-he mold and releasing the type when cast.

At one side of the lever G g stands a lever, M,whose fulcrum is at its lower end on a pivot, n, suitably secured to the base ofthe machine. This lever has a slot at about the center of its length, which receives a stud, r, attached to one side of the lever Gg, and at its upper end it carries a stud, 0. At the bottom a spring, q, secured to the base of the machine, acts upon the lever M with a tendency to throw it forward. On the outside of that part of the vibrating arm which carries the fixed portion C of the mold a small lever, N, works on a fulcrum, p, secured to the arm. The lower end of this lever has a screw, s, in its end, whose point bears against the outer or overhanging end of the matrix D, and its upper end is situated in front of the stud o. The lever M is moved forward by the stud r when the lever G gmoves forward to bringthe mold away from the matrix, and the stud o is thus caused to push forward the upper end of the lever N and consequently throw back the screw s and tilt the matrix. This takes place simultaneously with the opening of the mold. The spring g exerts sufficient intluence on the lever M to keep its stud o bearing against the lever N, and thus keep the point of the screw s always bearing on the matrix when the lever M is not being moved back by the lever G g, though it is not intended to be sufficient to interfere with the operation of the spring c and influence the matrix, but only to keep the parts in operation without clash.
The operation of casting the type is performed in the same manner in this as in other machines, and therefore needs no description.
It will be obvious that the type must ,be liberated and discharged from the mold with more certainty when in the position shown than when above its axis of oscillation, as the mold only requires to move away from the nipple and to open far enough to allow room for the type to drop out, which it does without impediment, the opening increasing in width toward'the bottom. p
In addition to the advantage accruing from the facility of the escapeof the type, the durability of the rmachine will be much increased owing to the almost total absence of concus-` will act in opposition to the momentum required in its movements toward. and from the mold, and its movement and degree of opening are enabled to be reduced, producing the results set forth.
