and state oflowa, new and useful Improvements in Gearing; andI. dohereby declare that the. following is a-fiill, clear, andexact description thereof,
ave. invented certainreference being'lmd tothe accompanying drawings, and tolthe letters of reference marked tliereon, which.for1n a part of this This invention" relates toj iiii improvement in gearing and consists .oii the matters hereinafter described and --inore' particularly pointed out 'in "the appended claims. t
. 'lhe'i i' proveinent;.in gearing, as shown hereimis applied to a washingmachine and is used for impartingrotary reciprocato'ry movement to the familiar doll y shaft .of a
' wa'sliing machine.
Iii the drawingss-Figure 1v represents a side elevation of a washing machine provided with my improved gearing. "Fig. 2 is a view showing a partial vertical section on an enlarged scale through the gearing in a plane indicated by the line 2+2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view representinga top plan view of the washing machine. Fig. 4c is a 'viewrepresenting-a detail perspective of a reciprocating rack-plate to be more particularly referred to later.
Referring now to that embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawings, 1-0 in dicates a'support, in this case a washing machine tub comprising a tub 10 supported on upright legs 11, 11, which are held in proper spaced relation by diagonally-aiiranged cross-bars 11?, 11'. Thetiib is provided with a top' comprising spaced, parallel, fixed marginal parts 12, 12, a fixed marginal part 12", arranged at right. angles to the firstnamed marginal parts, and a lid 12" hinged -to the fixed marginal part. 12 and adapted to close the space between the parallel marginal parts 12, 12.
13 (see Fig. 2) indicates a dolly-shaft which depends into the tub and carries a dolly or beater 13 at its lower end. Said shaft has bearing in an upright sleeve l-l made integral with a horizontal bearing plate 15 attached to tlie'top of tlie liinged lid 12". Said'slecvc extendsjal-ioveand'hclow said bearing plate 15,:at itslo'we'r Patented-Septi3, 1912.
extending into an aperture in the hinged lid-12". The shaft 13 projects above the the sleeve.
' 17 indicates ahorizontal shaft .rotatively ll sleeve 14;, and has there fixed to it .a beveled] gear 16. which bears upon the upper end of mounted in upright bearing arms15 ,15,: rising from the plate1'5. A beveled. gear 18 is pinned to the inner end of the shaft-17 .l
and niesheswith the beveled gear 16. spur-gear 19 is pinned to the outer end of the shaft. 17. Said beveled gear 18 and spur gear 19-have' hubs 18 19, respectively,
which have thrust bearing on opposite sides;
of the associated bearing arms 15?, 15 sof' as to hold the shaft 17 against longitudlnalg movement. I
()n the fixed marginal to the inner edge of the said fixed part part 12 of. the tub top is secured a bearing plate 20, which ex: tends nearly the full length of said fixed; partand has a longitudinal flange 20. at one, edge which is located at or adjacent 21 indicates a reciprocating rack-plate hav f ing upright rack-teeth 21 formed ad acent one edge; The edge of said racleplate in which the teeth are formed engages against the upright tlange20 of the bearing P ate 1 'In the top surface of the rack-plate near its other edge is'forined a longitudinal, rectangiilar groove 21" in which engagesa de-.
in any convenient l litlllll tfl'., tls by means of" belts or screws 23, which extend through the marginal parts of the plateQO A 'llie rack-plate 21 is'providcd intermediate its ends with a laterally extending web 21 which carries a pin 21. On said pin 2L is pivotally mounted one end of a. pitinan 24 which is adapted to impart reripi-(wat-ing movement to the rack 21 by mechanism presently to be described. It is.
apparent that by ru'iproeating the rack- -plat e'2l .a rotary, oscillatory movement will i..."
horizontal'llanges 22 and through the end I 1o thereto by means of a suitable belt or screw.
. be imparted the spur-gear 19 and through 7 provided 'with spaced pairs of apertured lugs 26, 26, each pair being adapted to embrace one of the lugs 25 and being hinged The lugs 25 and arms 26 thus'comprise the two leaves of the hinges by nieans of which the part 12' of thetub top is hinged to the fixed marginal part 12 thereof. The parts are so arranged that the common axis of v the hinges is located above and back of the plane of the rack-teeth 21 so that when the hinged part 12 of the tub top is swung upwardl on its hinges, the spur-gear 19 carried t ereby will move away from engaging position with the teeth in the rack-plate without binding.
The spur-gear 19, shaft 17, and beveled gears 18, and 16 are protected by a gear case 27 which is formed to inclose said arts, as clearly shown in the drawings, an is provided with laterally disposed, horizontally spaced pairs of apertured lugs 27, by means of which it is secured to the hinged top of the tub. Said gear casing prevents the clothes of the operator from becoming entangled in the gearing.
Located in a lane back of the tub and ex tending paralle to the shaft 17 carried b the hinged tub lid, isa main driving sha twhieh, as shown, 13 in length equal sub-- stantiall to the diameter of the tub and has bearing in plates 29, 30 attached to the tub body near the ends of said shaft. The shaft 28 has rigidly secured to it a pulley 31. The pulley 31 is adapted to be driven from a suitable source of power and, as shown here in, said pulley is connected by a belt 32 to the driving pulley 33 of an electric motor 34 suppor ed below the tub body. Said motor is carried on a baseboard 35 secured in the angle of the cross-braces 11, 11 that brace the tub legs apart.
A pinion 36 is keyed to the shaft 28 adjacent the pulley 31, said pinion meshing with a lar e gear 37 fixed to a shaft :37 that extends parallel to the main driving shaft 28 above the tub top and has bearingnear its ends in the plates 29 and 30. On
the face of the gear 37 is provided a crankpin 37 with which the pitman 24 has pivotal connection so that the continuous rotation of the gear 37 in one direction will impart through the pitman 24-. a reciprocating, longi tudinal, sliding movement to-the rack-plate .21.. The pinion 36 and the gear 37 are protected by a casing or shell 37* which ineloses them, and is attached to the bearing plate 29.
The gearing described herein is simple in construction and eflicient in operation. Allofthe gearing is ampl protected so that it is particularly adapts le for use in power washing machines which are usually open ated by women andmust, therefore, be es-.. pecially free ,from-the ossibility of cloth-- mg or parts of the b0 ybeing caught between engaging gear teeth.
By reason ofithe arrangement and construction of the: hinges of the lid, as described an increased clearance at the end of thedoll lid is in open position so that ample room is afiorded for passing the clothes from the tub to the wringerwhen a wringer is used.
The flange 20 on the bearing plate 20 under the reciprocating raek-plate 21 makes itpossible to thoroughly oil the bearings of saidracleplate, without danger of theoil dripp ng intonth'etub since said flange 2O will retain the oilon the bottom plate 20.
' While in describing one embodiment of my invention, I :-:have shown and described certain details of mechanical construction and arrangement, it is to be understood that my invention is. in noway limited except as pointed out in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention r y shaft provided when the-hinged 1.
