To all 'wh-0m t may concern:
Be it known that I, BERTON L. VELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Stutsman and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and useful Oil-Cup; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful hard oil cup, and one of the objects of the invention is to facilitate the filling of the same with lubricant.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature, in which it is wholly unnecessary to remove the cover of the cup, thus avoiding the admission of dust, dirt or other foreign particles.
Cne of the features of the invention is the provision of a partially revoluble disk having an aperture, adapted to register with a similar aperture in the top of the cup, and provided with means for holding the disk in adjusted positions.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of an oil cup, constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view, Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings 1 designates the base of the oil cup, which is provided with threads 2 at its neck portion 3, for
engagement with the threads of the bearing f1 to be lubricated. Above the neck 3, the base flares outwardlyT as shown, which outwardly Haring portion is provided with eX- terior threads 5, which are engaged by the threads 6 of the casing 7 of the cup. Mounted upon a pivot 8 and revoluble partially against the under face of the casing is a disk 9, having an opening 10, which is adapted to be thrown into registration with the opening 11 of the top 12 of the casing 7, when it is desired to pour lubricant in the cup. The top 12 of the casing 7 is provided with an elongated opening 18, through which a lug 14 of the disk 9 extends. The
elongated opening 13 on one of its walls is provided with teeth 15. Pivoted to the lug 14 is a latch member 16 having a tooth 17, adapted to engage any one of the teeth 15, for holding the disk 9 in adjusted positions. To permit the disk 9 to be freely moved, the member 16 may be thrown as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, thereby disengaging the tooth 17 from the teeth 15. It will be noted that by screwing the casing 7 downwardly, so as to bring the base and the top of the casing closer together, the waste in the cup will be closely compacted, thereby rendering it diiiicult for the lubricant to percolate the waste, in reaching the bearing which is to be lubricated.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is:
In combination, a hard oil cup casing having an integral top provided with an elongated opening having a series of teeth upon one of its walls and provided with a smaller elongated opening directly opposite the first opening, a disk pivoted to the top upon its under surface and in the casing and provided with an opening corresponding to the second opening and adapted to register therewith when the disk is rotated, a bifurcated pin having a restricted portion eX- tending through the disk and provided with a shoulder which contacts with the disk, the restricted portions being riveted, the upper portion of the bifu'rcated pin being located in the first elongated opening, a latch member pivoted in the bifurcation of the pin and comprising a finger piece at one end for manipulating the latch member so that the disk may be adjusted, and a tail end tooth adapted to engage any one of the series of teeth, whereby the disk may be held in adjusted positions, so as to hold the second andthird openings fully or partly in registration or out of registration.
