GARBAGE-RECEPTACLE AND THE LIKE.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OTTO A. Tnos'r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Receptacles and the Like, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in garbage receptacles and the like, and has for its object the provision of receptacles of this character of simple construction and efficient in operation, and which facilitate the removal of garbage and ashes and the like from houses in crowded cities.

The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is an interior elevation of a portion of a fence equipped with a device embodying my invention, Fig. 2, a vertical section through the fence showing the device in elevation, Fig. 3, a horizontal section taken on line 00-01 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4, an enlarged detail view of the lower pivotal joint of the door employed in the device.

The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a door 1 which is pivotally mounted in an opening 2 provided in the fence 3. A socket member l is secured centrally to the upper edge of door 1 and asimilar socket member 5 is secured to the fence in position to reg ister with socket 4. A headed pivot pin 6 is dropped into said socket members and thus constitutes a pivotal mounting for the upper edge of the door. A supporting shelf 7 is hinged to the lower edge of door 1 to swing upwardly thereagainst. This hinge joint is effected by means of angular hinge members 8 secured to door 1 and projecting outwardly therefrom, as shown in Fig. 2. Companion hinge members 9 are secured to the upper surface of supporting shelf 7 adjacent the rear edge thereof and are pivotally connected at 10 with hinge members 8 so as to provide a portion 11 of shelf 7 which projects rearwardly beyond pivot point 10 to abut against door 1 so as to hold said door securely in horizontal position but at the same time permit the same to be folded upwardly against said Specification of Letters Patent.

door. Shelf 7 carries two can seats 12 adapted to receive garbage or ash cans 13, and cables or chains 14 are secured to said door and to the covers of said cans so as to prevent loss of the same. A pivot pin 15 is secured to the bot-tom of supporting shelf 7 and a socket member 16 is secured to the fence 1 in position to receive pin 15, said socket member and pin being positioned in axial alinement with pin 6 and thus constitutes a pivotal mounting for the lower edge of door 1 to permit swinging of said door on a vertical axis. Door 1 is also provided with a suitable latch 17 by means of which it may be held in closed position.

In use, the device is arranged in the rear fence of a yard, and cans 13 may be readily filled with garbage, ashes, or other refuse from the house, from within the yard. When it is desired to empty said cans, door 1 may be readily swung on its vertical axis, thus placing said cans on the outside of the fence for ready access by the person removing the contents of the same. When the cans are emptied, door 1 is returned to its original position. By hinging the supporting shelf 12 to door 1, said shelf may be folded upwardly against said door, when not in use, and to facilitate transportation. The specific construction set forth is simple and readily assembled, and is strong and durable in use.

.Vhiie I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invent-ion into effect, this is capa ble of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. The combination of a fence having a door opening therein; pivoted sockets secured to said fence centrally above and below said opening and in axial alinement with each other; a door fitting said opening; a pivot socket secured to the top of said door to register with the corresponding socket on the fence; a headed pivot pin dropped through said registering sockets; a supporting shelf hinged to the lower portion of said door to fold upwardly thereagainst; and a pivot pin secured to the bottom of said shelf and engaging in the corresponding socket on the fence, substantially as described.

2. The combination of a fence having a door opening therein; pivoted sockets secured to said fence centrally above and below said opening and in axial alinenient with each other; a door fitting said opening; a pivot socket secured to the top of said door to register with the corresponding socket on the fence; a headed pivot pin dropped through said registering sockets;

a supporting shelf hinged to the lower portion of said door to fold upwardly thereagainst; a pivot pin secured to the bottom of said shelf and engaging in the corresponding socket on the fence; and two can seats on said shelf, substantially as described.
