To all 'whom it may concern.'
.Be it known that I, iVHiTFiELD J. v-AiNiiii,
a subject of the King of England, intl "resident of the city of Pi'ovidsnce, in the county of Providence and State ot Rhode Island, United States of America, liiii's invented certain nowiind useful lriiproveiiients in Account-Files, of which the following is :i specification.
This invention relates to account registers 0i tiles, :intl liiis for its object to pr0- vide a file of this character having a seri-s of overllipping horizontally disposed sepaiiatoi's or partitions Loinprisng tleiiibln plates yisltliilily iiioiiiitetl in inii's in ii tray, the uncovered and portions of eacli partition carrying exposed the naine of t'lic-y ciistomiir Wliicli iippeii opposite the iiiiioiiit iif 20 titioii li I alpliiibutized Kir otliiziiii i. niiirlinil unil provided `with i tali to facili* tate niiinipiiliitiioii in tiling salles slips or other papers betwQ-ii themn The invention further consists in tlis prn- Vision of :i Aplurality of separate trays to contain :i single soi-irs of separators and. of ineiiiis "to liiiirfc two oi' more of said tiiivs' tor* gctliei' whereby tliii register niziv liti folded into fi, compnet toi-iii to facilitate transfer and storing.

This holder ma);y be attaclied to the ifi/,n b y arri' suitable means. An upi turned lab portion 25 is formed on nl cnil oi the `holder to be engaget'l by the inuinb and linger of the operator for nianip-A hinting the separator.
Another feature ot.' this construction is that a special indicating slip may be can Vieil in the trough beneath the name plate, which slip is adapted to be withdrawn or xlended into view to indicate or denote certain conditions of an individual account, This slip inav have different colors on opposite sides so that the slip may be Withdrawn and the reverse side l'irought, into view which will then indicate another condi tion entirely distinct from the `lirst and 'when not exposed at all a third condition may exist. and thus be indicated.
The essential 'feature of my present invention is the particular means by which these partitions are hinged or retained in position in the trays, which that of forming lips '26 trom the metal ot the base plate by cutting and bending small portions thereof inward from the plane of its innersurtace. These lips are preferably arranged in staggered relation in the bottom of the tray so as not to weaken the stock thereof, Whereby adjacent partition plates are secured by (litl'erent sets of lips. ln the presentinstare I have shown three longitudinal rows of lips, a, b, and c, the two outside rows a and c being also in alinement transversely with each other and are adapted to engage corresponding apertures 2'( and 28 in one set of partitions, the next adjacent set of partitions ha ving a single aperture 29 Which is engaged by the lips L'. In other Words, one partition is engagedby two lips a and c, 'an the next partition is engaged by the single lip I), and so on alternately lfirst two lips and then one are adapted to engage' and hold the alternate partitions (Z and e in position. In attaching these partitions in the tray the lips 26 are passed u through the apertures in the partitions a ter which the lips are bent down into the position illiistrated in Fig. 5 firmly binding and securing'the inner edgesI of tl'e partitions to the base .late 13. These lips are so located that the xed edge 30 of one partition when secured in position abuts a ainst the rear face of the next partition e` thereby effec- ,tually preventing the plates from working loose or being accidentally7 withdrawn even though 4the lips were noli` forced tightly down upon them to rigidlY bind them in position. llange l2 if toi-ined on the aal .if lh'- trav `which is adapted to bc per: over and haelt u )on the edge of the Ilast partition to bind and hold the same in position.`
I claim:
l.4 An account Ble comprising a base plate having gripping lips, and a series of partitions having correspol'iding apertures throu h which said lips pass for securing one e ge of said partitions to said plates.
2. An account file comprising a base late having integral gripping lips raised iiom its inner face, and a series of partitions having corresponding apertures through which said lips pass for securing one edge of said partitions to said plate.
having integral gripping lips, and a series of partitions having correspondinrr apertures through which said lips pass tening said partitions to said plates, the fixed edge of one partition abutting against the back of the next adjacent partition to prevent the accidental withdrawal of said first partition.
4. An account [ile comprising a base plate having a series of integral grippin lips punched inward from the face thereo and a series of partitions comprising thin flexible plates having corresponding apertures adjacent one edge thereof through which aperture said lips pass for binding one edge of said partition to said plates.
5. An account file comprising a base plate having a series of integral gripping lips punched inward from the face thereof, and a series of partitions comprising thin flexible plates having corresponding apertures adjacent one edge thereof through which apertures said lips passfo' fastening said' partition to said plates, the xed edge of one partition abutting against the back.. of the next adjacent partition to prevent the accidental withdrawal of said first partition.
. 6. An account file comprising a base `plate having a series of integral gripping lips, a series of partitions comprising thin exible plates having corresponding apertures thron h which said lips pass for binding the e ges of the partitions to said plates, side walls at either edge of said partition for preventing lateral displacement of the slips deposited between said partition.
7 An account file comprising a base plate having a series of integral gripping lips raised inward from the inner face thereof and arranged in staggered relation transltersely thereof, a series of overlapping artitions comprising thin flexible plates aving corresponding apertures through which said lips pass for binding the edges of the partitions to said plate, and side walls at either edge o't" said partition for preventin lateral displacement of the slips deposited between said partition.
S. .\n account tile comprising a base plate lhaving a series oli integral gripping lips 3. An account file comprising a base plate or fasi vtitions 'comprising thin flexible plates raised inward from the inner face thereof and arranged in staggered relation transversely thereof, a. series of overlapping arav'- ingl corresponding a ei'ti es through which said lipsv pass for blndingthe edges of the partitions to said plate, and side walls at either edge of said partition :for preventing lateral displacement of the slips deposited 10 between said partit-ion, the fixed edge of one partition abutting against the back of the next adjacent partition to prevent the accidental Withdrawal of said first partition.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature 15 in presence of two witneses. v\NH1']`l `U51LD J. HAINER. Witnesses HOWARD E. BARLOW, E. I. UGUEN.
