Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 3, i912.
Application filed fictober 16, 1903. Serial No. 523,035.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it imown that I, CLARENCE S. W'ooo, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne end State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automobile-Hoods, of which the following is a specification, reference being l1 ad therein to the accompanying drawings.
llhe invention relates particularly to a sectional sheetmetal hood designed to cover and conceal the engine and other worming.
parts of the vehicle, and has for its object the production oi a device of this character having the requisite amount of rigidity to Withstand usage, and this without the usual internal reinforcing of parts.
With this end in view, the invention consists in the novel and simple construction of the hood, in the peculiar arrangement and its parts, and in various de tails of construction as will bennore fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawingq-lfigure 1 is a perspective view of a section of hood made in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the top hinge, the parts being detached; Fig. 3 is a'silnilar View 01'? a hinge uniting the top with the in the drawings thus designates the hood top, comprising the sections B and (I, united at the ridge by a hinge I), all of the sections of the hood being made preferably of sheet metal. The hinge may be of any approved type, and I have here shown the same as formed by in tercngaging tubular members a, constructed to eline axially and to receive a suitable pint-lo Z E 13 represent the complementary side portions.- Each is provided at its upper briefiydescribed, a
- edge with a transverse abutment G formed ing tubular members upon the ahutments, the parts being united by a pinlle, as (Z.
As thus constructed. outward or spreading inommcnt of the sides beyond the posi tion they would occupy in the ordinary'pd sition of the structure. is prevented, and a rigid and durable structure is produced without'the necessity of using internal reinforcements or braces.
What I claim as my invention is,-
1. In a hood, the combination wi h a top composed of complementary sections oonnected by e hinge extending longitudinally of the hood, of sides, the outer side edge'of each complementary section and the upper end of the corresponding side being provided with inwardly extending portions hinge together, said inwardly extending portions abutting iii the operative relation of the hood parts to prevent outward or spreading movement of the sides beyond their normal position.
21311 a hood, the combination With a top composed of complementary sections connested by a hinge extending longitudinally of the hood, of side the outer side edges of the complemeutai sections and the supper edges of the sides having inwardly extendins parallel flanges arranged at substantially right angles to the planes of the sides, said flanges having their extremities shaped to form eyes, and pintles engaging said eyes, said parallel flanges cooperating in till; operative relation. of the hood parts to prevent outward or spr *adingmovement. of the sides b6yOil(l 'i;l1Ql1 normul position.
3. In a vehicle hooththe combination with a top composed of sections hinge l together, the opposite-side edges of the-hood having inwardly extending lateral extensions formin; transverse ahutmeuts,o:t complementary siiloshaving their upper offsetto contaot with he top abutmcnts in the operative position oi. the hood, and hinges uniting the sides to the top formed by integral interenguging tubular members upon the shutment, pintles engaging said members.
In testimony whereof I ailir; Juiture in presence of two witncs a CLARENCE S. Vt/OD.
