Be it known that I, GEORGE I-I. ROBERTS,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Thomas, in the county of Custer and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IVhiHietreoHooks, of which the following is a specication, reference being had` to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in -whiliietree hooks, t-he object of the invention being to provide a hook of this character which is adapted to securely hold the trace upon the end of the f swinglet'ree and prevent the trace from becoming accidentally unhooked from the end of the swingletree.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will possess advantages in points of efficiency and durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.

Vtith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings in which,

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates a metallic ferrule adapted to be applied to the end of the whifietree 2. Centrally arranged in the closed end of the ferrule is the screw 3 adapted to be screwed into the end of the whiiiietree to hold the ferrule securely in place, the outer end of the screw being formed. smooth and extends out beyond the end of the ferru'le and over .which the-end of the trace 4l is adapted to be hooked.

' Formed on the ferrule and arranged at diametrically opposite points are the outwardly extending lugs 5 and 6. Pivotally secured to the lug 5 by means of the rivet 7 is the angular 'bar 8 having the opening Specication of Letters Patent.

9 formed therein, which, when the bar is swung to a closed position is adapted to receive the outer end of the screw 3. Secured to the free end of the bar 8 by means of the rivet 10 1s the spring plate l1, said plate being provided adjacent its free end with the spaced ribs l2 which are adapted to engage upon each side of the lug 6 to hold the bar 8 securely upon the outer end of the screw 3 and prevent the trace 4l from becoming accidentally unhooked from the end of the swingletree.

In the operation of the device, the trace 4L is first hooked over the outer end of the screw 3 and the bar 8 is swung across the end of the swingletree, the outer end of the screw engaging the opening 9, and the ribs 12 engaging with the lug 6 to hold the bar securely in place. It will be seen that the free end of the plate 11 is curved slightly as shown at 18 so that the same can be easily grasped to release the ribs 12 from the lug 6 when the trace is to be unhooked from the swingletree. 4

While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention it will be obvious that variousA changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope thereof.

What I claim is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a swingletree, of a fer rule rigidly secured to the end thereof, lugs formed on t-he ferrule at diametrically op posite points, an angular bar pivotally secured to one of said lugs and having one of its ends disposed across the end of the swingletree, a spring plate rigidly secured to the free end of said bar, spaced ribs formed on the outer end of the plate and adapted to engage with one of said lugs to hold the bar in an operative position, and means projecting from the end of the swingletree to retain the trace in position between said bar and the swingletree.
