Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed August 5, 1911.
Patented Sept. 3, 1912. Serial No. 642,461.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY B. JOHNSTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Powerof which the following is a specification.
The purpose of my invention is to provide a water wheel by which the full power of a stream of running water may be developed, and one by the use of which the fish in said stream may be kept from passing up or down said stream, and one that will not become clogged or stopped by the moss or debris in the water. These objects I accomplish with the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures.
Figure 1 is an elevation, parts shown in section on line 00 w of Fig. 2 and parts cut away. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line a a of Fig. 1.
My device is mounted in a metal casing 1, having an inwardly extended annular flange 2, on each side thereof. A portion of each side of said casing 1 is cut out and within which cut is fitted a bearing case 3, Within which is carried balls 4 and held therein by the cone shaped nut 5 and the jam nut 6. The said cone shaped nut 5 and the jam nut 6 are threaded to mesh with the threads on the main shaft 7, which is mounted in said ball bearings. The driving gear 8 is secured on one end of said shaft 7, and if desired a driving pulley 9 may be secured on the other end. Within the said flanges 2, and carried by bearings 10 on the shaft 7, is the drum screen A. Within said drum screen and carried on the said shaft 7, is the power wheel B, which consists of a plurality of radially disposed sides 22, formed on or secured integral with the hub 23. Near each end of said sides 22 is provided or formed integral thereon the ribs 24, to which ribs are pivoted the blades 25', in this way forming a breakable blade of one of said sides and its hingedly attached blade 25. Said blades have the ribs 24 pivoted to the said ribs 24. The said ribs 24 have one end thereof extended to engage the said sides 22, thus preventing each of the blades 25 from assuming or turning on its hinges more than to the radial plane of said side when extended, and when folded or turned on its hinges each blade will strike or rest on the inner edge of the adjacent blade thus forming a V-shaped cup. Each cup is formed by two of said sides 22 and one of said blades 25 and the ends by a segment of the disks 26, which disks form the ends of the said power wheel B. Said drum screen A, consists of two disks 11 each having an extended cup 12 thereon forming a case for said bearings 10. Concentric with each of said cups 12 and formed integral on. the outer sides of said disks 11 is the annular bevel gear 13, and secured on the said shaft 7 is the bevel gear 14. Carried on threaded shafts 15 are the beveled idler gears 16 the teeth of which mesh with the teeth of said bevel gear 14 and with the said annular bevel gear 13. Between the said disks 11 and near the peripheries thereof, is fastened the horizontal bars 17, to which is pivoted the inwardly extended lugs 28. The folding-blades 18 are secured in the said lugs 28 by the pins 19. The lugs 28, which are fastened on the said bars 17, prevent the said folding blades 18 from assuming more than a radial position. Surrounding the said rod 17 is the metal screen 21 forming a drum screen. The said power wheel B is securely keyed on the said shaft 7 and turns therewith in the direction of the arrow Z), while the drum screen A, mounted on the said shaft 7 in the ball bearings 10 will be turned in the direction of the arrow 0. The power of the current of the water that passes in an undershot direction as indicated by the arrow 6 will pull on the said power wheel B, and at the same time the power of the current of water passing in an overshot direction as indicated by the arrow 6, will pull on the screen A, and the joint power will be united through the bevel gears 13, 14, and the beveled idler gears 16, and supplied through the driving gear 8 or pulley 9, when the device is partially or fully submerged in the running stream, thus enabling me to unite and secure the power of an undershot and an overshot wheel in the space of one. For the adjustment of the wear of the ball hearings in the idler gears 16 the said shafts 15 are provided with threads and a jam nut 20. As will be readily observed any moss or debris that may lodge or catch on the said drum screen A on the up stream side of said screen will be washed off by the said casing 1 is formed in two water of the down stream side. And said screen will prevent the passage of fish up or down stream and any injury thereto by the said power wheel or parts thereof. lhe parts and fastened together by the nuts 27, thus enabling me to more easily assemble the parts of my device.
Having thus described my invention I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim 1. In a device of the class described the combination of a horizontally placed driving shaft, an undershot wheel secured thereon, a drum screen carried on said shaft concentric with said undershot wheel, hinged blades therein, and intermeshing gears adapted to impart the motion of the said wheel and screen to said shaft, as and for the purpose described.
2. In a device of the class described the combination of a horizontally placed driv ing shaft, an undershot wheel secured there,- on, a drum screen having radially hinged blades therein carried on said shaft concentric with said wheel, and intermeshing beveled gears adapted to coact in imparting motion to said shaft, as and for the purpose described.
3. In a device of the class described the combination of a horizontally placed driv ing shaft, an undershot wheel having feathering blades secured on said shaft, a drum screen having radially hinged blades therein carried on said shaft concentric with said wheel, and intermeshing beveled'gears adapted to coact in imparting motion to said shaft, as and for the purpose described.
