JOHN B. CULLEN', OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LOCK-NUT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 30, 1912.
Serial N 0. 694,100.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. CULLEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New-Y0rk, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lock-Nuts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates more particularly to a class of devices or nuts adapted to be used in conjunction with threaded bolts and rods.
My invention has for its object primarily to provide a form of lock-nut or device designed to be employed upon bolts when used to connect various parts of structural work,
and which is adapted when applied upon the bolt or rod to be held against movement or displacement resulting from vibration or strain as well as being of a form to permit the nut to be readily removed therefrom, thus overcoming the objections incident to the usual form of nuts which frequently rust so tightly to the bolt or rod that it is practically an impossibility to separate them intact.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lock-nut especially to be used in conjunction with bolts of long lengths and upon threaded rods, and which is of simple and eflicient form.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, the said invention being more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view of one form of a lock-nut enibodying my invention applied upon a bolt. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the sections of the body of the lock-nut. F ig. 3 is an end view of the sleeve of the lock-nut, and Fig. 4 is an end view of the section of the body of the lock-nut.
The lock-nut, or device 10 has a tubular body 11 composed of two members, or sections 12 and 13, each of which is alike in formation and semi-circular in shape. The inner surface of the sections 12 and 13 are threaded in a manner so that the body is provided with a continuous thread when the sections are assembled for engagement With the threaded end of a rod, or bolt 14.
Upon one end of each of the sections 12 and 13 may be a semi-circular portion so that when the sections of the body 11 are assembled a collar 15 is provided. Adjacentto the collar 15 is a flange, as 16, and an enlarged angular portion providing a wrench seat 17 which may be hexagonal, or square, or any other suitable shape when the sections are assembled so as to be adapted to receive a wrench whereby the body 11 may be manually rotated when it is desired to remove it after being applied upon a bolt, or threaded rod, or the like. The ends or stems of the sections 12 and 13 of the body 11 which are opposite to the also exteriorly threaded, at 18, so that a continuous threaded portion for the body will be-provided when said sections are as sembled upon a bolt.
Serving as a means to hold the sections 12 and 13 of the body 11 against displacement when applied upon a bolt, I provide a clamp or sleeve 19. The sleeve 19 is interiorly threaded, at 20, and may be hexagonal, or square in exterior formation whereby a wrench seat 21 is provided so that the sleeve may be screwed upon the sections 12 and 13 of the body 11. In applying the lock-nut to a bolt, or the like the sections .12 and 13 are disposedupon the threaded stem thereof so as to conform with each other, and the sleeve 19 may then be screwed upon the threaded stems of the sections, or the sleeve 19 and said sections may be first assembled, and the parts then screwed upon the bolt. By the simultaneous, or alternate employment of wrenches upon the seats 17 of the body 11 and upon the seat 21 of the sleeve 19 the lock-nut may be rotated so as to be suitably adjusted upon the bolt.
For the purpose of holding the lock-nut upon the bolt against movement by vibration, or shock, or strain in each of the stems ofthe sections 12 and 13 are threaded coun tersunken openings 22 and 23, in order that a set-screw 24 may be guided in each open ing when the sections are applied to a bolt so as to engage the thread of the bolt. When it is desired to remove the loclonut from the bolt the set-screw 24 is removed from the openings in the stems. By the use of wrenches upon the seats 17 and 21 the sleeve 19 will be readily disengaged from the stem of the body, and the sections 12 and 13 may then be detached from the bolt.
In the foregoing description I have em- Patented Aug. 2'7, 1912.
ing myself thereto, as I am aware that modi- 'fications may be made therein without departing from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages oi this invention,
therefore I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall Within the scope thereof.
Having; thus described: my invention 1 claim as new and desireto secure by Iuetters Patent 1., In; a; lock-nut, a: tubular body composed of" two semi-circularsections; each having a stem. and an; angulan' enlarged portion ex teriorly. at one end: thereof whereby aiwrench seat is; provided; when: the sections are assembled and each of: the stems being correspondingly threaded. int eri'orly' and exteriorlys, both of said; stems having an openin'g,v means adapted to hold the sections-0t the body. togetherand: a. set-screw provided: in the opening of'eacli stem and: serving to lock the sections against displacement when applied upon a threaded bolt or the like.
2. In a lock-nut, a tubular body composed .of two semi-circular sections, each having a stem and an angular enlarged portion exteriorly at one end thereof wherebyawrench seat is provided when the sections are assembled and each of the stems being corre- "jspondingly threaded interiorly and exteboth 01": said stemshaving-j aniopen riorly, mg, an exterior-1y threaded sleeve adapted tobe screwed upon: the stems when assem bled; and aset-screw provided in the'opening of: eaelr stem andserv-ing to lock the sections against displacement when applied upon a threaded boltz or the like:
This specification signed and witnessed this twenty-ninth day of April A. D. 1912.
