Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, HANS ALLESE, millwright, J ENS MARTIN JENSEN, manufacturer, and CHRISTIAN JoHANsnN Sonou, land-owner, subjects of the Kingdom of Denmark, residing, respectively, at the city of Kolding, Agdrupvez 9, the city of Kolding, and the city of Tved, Dalby, in the county of Vejle, Denmark, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Cleaning Milk-Cans and the Like, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an apparatus for cleaning milk cans and the like, which apparatus permits of a thorough cleaning of the cans even in parts which are not readily accessible.

The said apparatus comprises brushes for scouring the bottom and the side walls of the can, which are placed in a frame, adapted to be collapsed together during insertion and withdrawing through the neck of the can, while during the scouring operation it is expanded to resiliently press the brushes against the side walls of the can. During the collapsion and expansion no essential lengthwise movement of the brush-frame takes place in relation to the shaft.

In the annexed drawings, in which parts of the brushes are omitted for the sake of clearness, a constructional form of the invention is shown.

Figures 1 and 2 show the apparatus in its most expanded and its collapsed position, respectively. Fig. 3 shows a plan view of the cover.

As shown in the figures a hollow spindle a carries a handle 5 and is supported at its upper part by a bearing in a cover a or the like, which is provided with three pins as and a series of pawl teeth y engaged by a spring lever z. This lever extends from a disk (2, which carries moreover three levers e pivotally mounted upon pins f and provided with slots or recesses 2' receiving the pins 00. When the lever a is moved to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3, the hooked ends 3' of the levers 6 will grasp the neck of the can, which they will again release, when the lever a is moved to the position shown in dotted lines.

The spindle a is provided with two pairs of apertures r through which extend levers s, which are curved in such a manner, that the brush-frame g, which consists of two halves, with which the levers are pivotally connected by means of bolts to, will not be moved essentially in the lengthwise direction, when the levers are drawn more or less into the spindle (1. Inside the latter they are connected with a sliding bar m by means of bolts 2?. A spring it tends to push the bar m farther into the spindle 0;, so that the brush-frame g is extended. The brushframe carries brushes 7a of a form corresponding to the shape of the side walls and bottom of the can.

When the brush-frame is to be collapsed the bar we is drawn outward (to the left in Figs. 1 and 2) and held in this position by a spring latch to engaging teeth '2) in the edge of the bar.

If the brushes are so worn that the frame connot reach the center of the can when scouring the sides, the latter are first scoured, and thereafter the center is scoured, while the bar is held so far lifted that the halves of the frame 9 overlap at the middle.

Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of our said invention we declare that what we claim is:

In an apparatus for cleaning milk cans and the like the combination of a hollow spindle having pairs of oppositely disposed apertures therein, a handle carried at the upper part of said spindle, a bar slidable in said spindle and having a projecting portion at the upper end provided with pawl teeth, a spring pressed pawl carried on said handle, and engaging said teeth, inwardly convexed levers pivoted at their inner ends to said sliding bar and projecting through said apertures, brush frame members pivoted to the outer ends of said levers on opa spring interposed between said stops, and scribing Witnesses, this 6th day of Decem- 10 means secured to the upper part of the her 1910. spindle and adapted to be secured to the milk can or the 1ike, for holding the apparatus in place. 1
