To all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that we, RANsoM C. l/Vmenr and FRANK E. STEBBINs, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, and Washington, District of Columbia, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car- Trucks, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to car trucks, and especially to the frames thereof and also to the combination of the frame with the j ournal boxes and springs.
Our objects are the production of a frame which can easily and cheaply be manufactured without the use of special appliances and can be repaired with equal facility, which shall be of ample strength at the upper end portions thereof where the weight is transmitted to the springs, which shall have the jaws or legs of the pedestals open at the bottom, and which in the preferred form shall allow the removal of an axle, a pair of wheels and two journal boxes by jacking up the end of the frame a short distance.
A further object is the provision of a combined wearing shoe and outer removable pedestal leg. And the final object is to form the main portions of the sides of flanged beams preferably rolled and to so fashion the ends thereof that very little labor will be involved in adapting them for the reception of cast metal pedestals.
Vith these ends in view, our invention consists in certain novelties of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter set forth and specified in the claims;
The accompanying drawings illustrate three examples of the physical embodiment of our invention' constructed according to the best modes we have so far devised for the practical application of theprinciples.
Figure 1 is a side view of a car truck in elevation with the cast metal'portion of the pedestal at the left hand in vertical section. Fig. 2 is a o-ne-half top plan view of Fig. 1, except that the cast metal pedestal is removed at the left hand end of the side piece; the other half of the frame being of identical construction is not shown. Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of the right hand end of the frame illustrated in Figs.
1 and 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged section on line x-m of Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the cast metalpedestal. Figs. 6, 7 and 8 illustrate another species of frame construction, Fig. 6 being a side view with one cast metal pedestal removed, Fig. 7 a half top plan view of Fig. 6, and Fig. 8 an end view in elevation of the pedestal. Figs. 9, 10 and 11 show a third species, similar to the second species, but wherein the main portions of the sides are of rolled channel beams.
Referring to all the species, the numeral 1 designates the transoms which unite the parallel sides pieces adjacent their centers, said transoms 1n this instance being of channel beams spaced apart; 2, tie pieces which unite the transoms adjacent their centers; 3, I
top plates riveted to the flanges of the transoms at their centers; 4, the rolled flanged beams which constitute the side pieces, Sheet-s l and 2 showing them as I beams and Sheet 3 as channel beams; 5, top gusset plates, and 6 bottom gusset plates which are riveted to the flanges of the side pieces and the transoms; 7, connection angles which are riveted to the webs of the side pieces and thewebs of the transoms; 8, the lower straight and unbent end portions of the side pieces cut off square through the web and flanges or flange, said end portions abutting the journal boxes or inner bearing flanges of the pedestals; 9, the upper upwardly bent end portions of the side pieces shown extending over the tops of the journal boxes in each of the three species, though in some cases, when so4 desired, they may end on top of the boxes; 10, the wheels and axles; l1, the journals; 12, t-he journal boxes with their opposite vertical sides recessed or provided with flanges, in a manner well known; 18, helical springs upon the tops ofthe journal boxes; 14, the inner bearing flange of the cast metal pedestal; 15, the seat or pocket for the upper end or ends of the spring or springs; 16, the web portion of the pedestal at right angles to the inner bearing flange; 17, the vertical web portion which extends over the spring seat or pocket, both of said web portions being secured to the upper and lower web portions of the end of a side piece by rivets passed through the webs of each, as shown; 18, a seat in the pedestal for the reception of the lower flange of the or single flange in Sheet 3, as shown; 22,

The cast metal pedestal shown on Sheet 1 has a composite outer legor jaw comprising an integral portion 24 downwardly eX'-" tended from theouter edge of the pedestal head or spring seat or pocket to a position preferably adjacent or below the center of the journal boX, or, in other words, this portion 24` hooks over the journal box, a longitudinal recess or slot 25 being formed in Y the downwardly .projecting portion 24 and said slot is preferably V-shaped and deeper at the bottom than at the top part of said projection, as shown, though it may be of any other suitable shape; and the combined removable leg and wearing shoe 26 having the `flange 27, web 28 at right angles to the flange, and the perforated lower end portion fory the tie bolt. This wearingshoe and leg 26 maybe of'wrought metal and forged to shape. The web 28- of the leg ts within the recess or slot in the p art 24, and the said leg and part 24 are united by boltsv29 passed through both Velements as lshown. f When the nuts 30 are tightened,

When .a pair of wheels is to be removed the tie bolt and bolts 29 are withdrawn, the leg 26 lowered from its seat,
. and the frame jacked up until the ends of the projections 24 are above the tops of the journal boxes. The'cast-met-al pedestals shown on Sheets 2 and 3 are of substantially identical construction, the outer leg or jaw 31 in each species being integral with thel spring seat or pocket or head of the pedestal and comprised of apbearing flange 32, a webz33 and an enlargement 34, the lower end of the leg also being perforated to receive the tie bolt.'
In fashioning the rolled flanged beam for a side piece the lower flange and web may be cut on the line L -Z) (see Fig. 6), the upper flange andweb on line c-d, the web cut longitudinally on the line ej-b-cl, a portion of the web above line d-b removed, and the remainingV portion thereof with the upper flange then bent upwardly to the position shown in Fig. 6, wherev the top flange of the lupper projecting end, portion is in a plane substantially parallel with but aboveside piece; 19, the-lower portion of thehinnery the plane ofthe top flange Aof the beam adjacent the transom ends. After both ends have'been similarly fashioned, the holes for objects or purposes ofv our invention. The
ends of the side pieces can easily and cheaply be fashioned for the reception of the cast metal pedestalsg`when the pedestals which preferably have integralspring seats or pockets have'been riveted in position, there will be ample strength on the line t where the weight is transmitted to the top end ofthe helical spring or springs 13; and the removable portion of the outer pedestal leg or jaw permits the rolling ,out of a pair of wheels by jacking up the frame a `short distance.l Moreover, should the outer removable leg become eX- cessively worn, another can be substituted.
Minor changes and modifications may be introduced in the practical application of our improvements, as, ,for instance, the lower portion of the inner pedestal jaw may be made separate, the shape of the spring seat or pocket be altered, and the upper end of the removable part of the outer jaw in the lirst species interlock with the downwardly projecting portion in a different manner. Such and other modications we shall not regard as substantial departures. Y
Vhat we claim is:
1. The combination in a car truck frame, of a transom or transoms located between the pairs of wheels; side pieces consisting yof flanged beams united adjacent their centers to the ends of the transom or transoms,
each end of each side piece being fashioned to have ay lower straight portion embracing a pa-rt of the lower flange and web, and an up-y of flanged beams united adjacent their centers to the ends of the transom or transoms, each end of each side piece being fashioned to have a lower straight portion embracing a part of the lower flange and web, and an upwardly bent upper portion embracing a Apart of the upper flange and web, said'upper portion projecting beyond the lower portion; and cast metal pedestals riveted to the upper and lower portions 0f each end of a side piece; each of said pedestals having flanged jaws open at the bottom and a seat or pocket integral with the pedestal for the upper end of a spring.
3. The combination in a car truck frame, of a transom or transoms located between the pairs of wheels; side pieces consisting of flanged beams united adjacent their centers to the ends of the transom or transoms, each end of each side piece being fashioned to have a lower straight portion embracing a part of the lower flange and web, and an upwardly bent upper portion embracing a part of the upper flange and web, said upper portion projecting beyond the lower portion; and cast metal pedestals riveted to the upper and lower portions of each end of a side piece; each of said pedestals having jaws open at the botto-m and a lower portion of the inner pedestal jaw 19 riveted to the lower' ange of the side piece; and said upwardly bent upper' portions of the side piece ybeing substantially straight and secured to the pedestal heads only adjacent the spring seats or pockets.

5. The combination in a car truck frame, of a transom or transoms located between the pairs of wheels; side pieces consisting of flanged beams united adjacent their centers to the ends of the transom or transoms, each end of each side piece being fashioned to have a lower straight portion embracing a part of the lower flange and web, and an upwardly bent upper portion embracing a part of the upper flange and web, said upper portion projecting beyond the lower portion; and cast metal pedestals riveted to the upper and lower portions of each end of' a side piece; each of said pedestals having bearing flanges for a journal box and a seat or recess 18 for the flange of the lower straight end portion 8 of the side piece.
6. The combination in a car truck frame,
of a transom or transoms located between of flanged beams united adjacent their centers to the ends of the transom or transoms, each end of each side piece being fashioned to have a lower straight portion embracing a part of the lower flange and web, and an upwardly bent upper portion embracing a part of the upper flange and web," said upper portion projecting beyond the lower portion; and cast .metal pedestals riveted to the upper and lower portions of each end of a side piece; each of said pedestals having jaws open at the bottom and riveted to one surface only of the end of a side piece with which it is in frictional contact.

The combination in a car truck frame, of a transom or transoms locatedbetween the pairs of wheels; side pieces consisting of flanged beams united adjacent their centers to the ends of the transom or transoms, each end of each side piece being fashioned to have a lower straight portion embracing a part of the lower flange and web, and an upwardly bent upper portion embracing a part of the upper flange and web, said upper portion projecting beyond the lower portion; and cast metal pedestals riveted to the upper and lower portions of each end of a side piece; each of said pedestals having a composite outer jaw or leg comprising an upper part integral with the pedestal which hooks over the journal box when the latter is in place and a removable lower part.
8. A side piece for a car truck frame consisting of a flanged metallic beam having at each end a lower straight portion 8 embracing a part of the lower flange and web, and an upper upwardly bent portion 9 embracing a part of the upper flange and web and projecting beyond the lower portion, and castmetal pedestals having jaws open at the bottom riveted to the webs of the lower and upper portions of the ends of the beam.
9. A side piece for a car truck frame consisting of a flanged metallic beam having at each end a lower straight portion 8 embracing a part of the lower flange and web, and an upper upwardly bent portion 9 embracing a `part of the upper flange and web and projecting beyond the lower portion, and cast metal pedestals having jaws open at the bottom and each pedestal riveted to the webs of the upper and lower portions and the flange of the lower portion; said upwardly bent portions 9 ending adjacent the spring seats or pockets.
10. A side piece for a car truck frame consisting of a flanged metallic beam having at each end a lower straight portion 8 embracing a part of the lower flange and web, and an upper upwardly bent portion 9embracing a part of the upper flange and web and projecting beyond the lower-portion, and cast metal pedestals riveted to the ends of thev beam, each pedestal having jaws open` at lthe bottom, and an integral spring seat or pocket for strengthening the pedestal on the line zf-t where the weight is projecting beyond the lower portion, and
cast metal pedestals having jaws open. at the bottom riveted to the ends of the beam upon one surface only thereof.
12. A side piece for a cartruck frame consisting` of a flanged metallic beam having at each end a lower straight portion 8 embracing a part of the lower flange and web, and an upper upwardly bent portion 9 embracing a part of the upper flange andweb and projecting beyond the lower portion, and cast metal pedestals riveted to the ends of the beam, each of said pedestals having an outer jaw or leg comprised of an upper part hooking over the journal box when in place and a removable lower part for the purpose specified.
13. A side piece for a car truck frame consisting of a flanged metallic beam having at each end a lower straight portion 8 embrac-l ing a part of the lower flange and web, and an upper upwardly bent portion 9 embracinga part of the upperflange and web and projecting beyond the lower portion, and cast metal pedestals riveted to the ends of the beam, each of said pedestals having an outer jaw or leg comprised ofan upper slotted part hooking over the journal box when in4 place and a removable lower part fitting the slot in the upper part and secured in place by a bolt or bolts, in substance as set forth.
14. A cast metal pedestal comprising flanged jaws open at the bottom and provided with means to receive a tie piece or bolt, webs 16 andv 17, and a spring seat or pocket, and said pedestal riveted to the end of a flanged beam, the upper portion of which beam extends over the seat or pocket i for the spring and the lower part' abuts the inner bearing flange of the pedestal.
15. A cast' metal pedestal comprising flangedl jaws open at the bottom and provided with holes for a tie bolt, a seat` or pocket for a spring, a single web 16 at rightangles to the inner bearing flange, a web 17 above the spring seat or pocket, and a perforated flange at the lower portion of the inner pedestal jaw for attachment to the flange of a side piece.
16. A 'cast metal pedestal comprising flanged jawsVY open vat the bottom, a seat or pocket for a spring, aV single web 16, and a web 17 above the spring seat; the lower portion of the inner pedestal leg having a seat or recess-18 bounded by the flange 2O and thelower edge of the web 16 to receive the flange of a side piece.
17. A cast metal pedestal having an outer jaw or leg comprised of an upper slotted or recessed portion which is adapted to hook over a ournal box, and a lower flanged portion engaging the slot Vand removably secured in position by a' bolt or bolts; the upper part of the flange of the lower portion being located inside the slotted upper portion of the leg.
18. A cast metal pedestal having a seat or pocket for a spring, an outer jaw comprising a slotted portion extended downwardly from the spring seat or pocket and adapted tohook over a journal box, and alower flangedportion with itstop end located between the downwardly project-ing portion and the journal box when the latter is in lace, and removably secured in position by a bolt or bolts.
19. A metallic pedestal having an outer jaw or leg comprising an upper portion integral with the pedestal and projecting downwardly and` adapted to hook over a i journal box when the latter is in place, and
a lower flanged portion having a hole for a tie bolt; said lower portion interlocking with the upper portion and removably held in position by a bolt or bolts. I
20. A metallic pedestal having an outer leg comprising the slotted portion 24 integral with the pedestal and hooking over the journal box when the latter is in place, and
a lower portion having a wearing flange 27 and web 28, the upper part of the latter fitting within the slot of the upper portion 24: and removably held in position by the bolt or bolts passing through holes in t-he upper and lower portions.
21. A metallic pedestal having an outer leg with an upper portion 24; with a tapering slot, and a lower portion having a wearing flange and 'atapered web, the web fitting the tapering slot in the part 24, and the parts united by a bolt or bolts.
22. A metallic pedestal having an outer leg comprising an upper portion 241 with a V-shaped slot, a lower portion with a wearing flange and V-shaped web to fit the V- shaped slot, and a bolt or bolts uniting said upper and lower portions.
23. A metallic pedestal having an outer leg comprised of upper and lower portions Y united by a bolt or bolts, said upper portion hooking over the ournal box when in place, and said lower portion interlocking with said upper portion and provided with a wearing flange, the upper part of which is located between the said upper portion and the journal box.
24:. The combination in a car truck frame, of a transom or transoms, flanged metallic side pieces united to the transom or transoms7 and cast metal pedestals having jaws open at the bottom; eaoh side piece having at each end a lower flanged portion, and an upper anged portion projecting beyond the said lower portion; and a pedestal secured to the upper 'and lower flanged portions at each end of a side piece; said upper flanged portions of the side piece ending adjacent the tops of the spring seats or 15 pockets.
