SPBINKLER.
Application filed August 26, 1911. Serial No. 46,210..
sprinkling `or watering of lawnsa gardens* and the like.
It is an object of the inventionto provide a sprinkler which is provided with a suitable base in which is mounted' a curved water distributing member, the force of the water passing through the same causing the same to rotate and properly spread the water in distribution.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a sprinkler with a movable member .adapted to be rotated by the action of the water passing through the same, which is provided with an outlet opening or nozzle having an enlarged portion arranged to distribute the greatest quantity of water where it is to be thrown to the greatest distance.
In theaccompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a View partially in vert-ical central section and par"- tially in elevation of the improved sprinkler as applied to the end of a hose. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the sprinkler. Fig. 3 is a horizontalA sectional view taken upon the line 3 3 of Fig. l, a portion of the supporting base of the device being broken away.
rlhe details and features of the invention will no-w be more particularly described reference being had to the said drawing in which- 5 indicates a hollow body portion and S a supporting base therefor while 7 indicates a movable water distributing member mounted in said body portion. The body portion 5 is provided with vertically alined bearings S and 9 in its top and bottom walls in which the movable member 7 is mounted. The said body portion is adapted upon one side to be fitted upon the end of a hose or pipe and for this purpose is l'ornwd with a slrow threaded rom-ss or sockel l0. ln the bottom ot the socket an opening 11 is provided communicating with the interior .of the said body portlon 5. The said body portion is adapted te be support-ed upon the ground by any suitable base, the form shown in the drawing being the preferable one in which a :broad ground engaging ring is used, which is connected with the body portion 5 by a suitable number .of radiating standards 12 usually formed integrally with the said body. portion and the ring of the base 6, the said base is thus suflioiently broad and. ample for holding the sprinkler in upright position and also suitable for permitting the sprinkler to be moved from place to place.
rlhe movable member 7 is preferably made hollow throughout, the body portion thereof engaging the bearing 8 while' the lower end extends to the lower wall of the casing 5 so as to abut upon the same and limit the downward movement of the member.
secured in the end of said member 7 and adapted to engage the bearing 9. The said reduced sleeve portion is internally threaded and a retaining screw 14 is insorted in the lower end thereof for holding the member 7 in position in its bearing. rlhe screw also closes'the sleeve at the lower end of vsaid member. The screw 14 is so arranged as to bear loosely against the under face of the body portion 5 so as'to permit' the member 7 to turn freely. The said movable member 7 extends a proper distance above the body portion 5 and its upper end is curved and twisted into an approximately spiral form, the upper open end of the said member forming a discharge nozzle for the water. The portion of the member 7 which is within the `chamber formed in the body portion 5 of the device is provided with perforations l5 in its walls for admitting water to the interior of said movable member. The outer end or nozzle of the movable member 7 is preferably' formed with an enlarged portion 16 near its upper end, which is reduced toward its lower end forming a narrow discharge opening 17. The peculiar shaping of the nozzle is desirable since the water will be discharged through said nozzle with the greatest quantity escaping at the top thereof, from which point water can be thrown The said lower end is also providedwith a reduced sleeve extension 13 rigidly i any ordinary hose or piping and the water entering the body portion 5 will. pass throughthe apertures 15 into the movable member 7. In forcing its way through'the curved or spiral portionofthe said member, themember'will berotated causin the water to be discharged from the nozz e at the upperend in a stream having a circular movement aboutthe sprinkler.'
I -While the device'has been s hownfas ro-- videdwith abroad circular baseyit will understood that the body portion 2 of the device could 'bewmounted `yupon av pin" or spike adapted to ber'atuck into the .ground at any .desired pointysuch as `is common use upon ordinary sprinklers, within the spirit of. the invention.
What I claim is A sprinkler comprising a head adapted to 25 be connected with a water supply and hav ing vertically alined bearings in its up er and lower walls, a rotatable distributlng member engaging said bearin and havin inlet apertures in 'its walls, t e up er an outer end thereof being bent spiral and having its discharge end formed with an opening enlarged at the top and flattened atthe bottom.
In witness that I claim the for 0in I 35 have 'hereunto subscribed my name t is 1 th 1 dayof August; 41911.
