RAZOR-STROPPER.
This invention relates to razor stroppers,
designed more particularly for sharpening various types of safety razor blades and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide an efficient device of simple construction which will quickly sharpen a safety razor blade by presenting both sides to the stropping surface and which can be quickly placed in position and removed from the stropper.
Another object of the invention is to provide a safety razor blade sharpener in which the movement of the blade on the surface of the strop is circular and in a horizontal plane, means being provided for reversing the blade quickly and the stropping disk being readily reversible being provided with a hone surface and a finishing surface. 1
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a safety razor stropper of simple construction which will be inexpensive to manufacture, which can be operated by an unskilled person and which will put a fine shaving edge on the blade quickly.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a razor stropping device made in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a circular casing having a closed bottom 2 on which is secured a suitable pad 3 to prevent the casing from moving when placed upon a table or other support. The casing 1 is provided with a circular flange surrounding the same and said casing is open at its upper side to permit the insertion of the reversible strop or disk which will hereinafter be described. Secured centrally to the bottom of the casing is a pin 4 said pin projecting above the casing as shown more clearly in Figs. 1 and 3. vided with a central aperture 6 adapted to fit over the pin 4 said disk having a hone surface upon one side and a finishing surface upon the other side, said disk adapted to be reversed whenever desired to give the blade both a honing and finishing contact.
Mounted to rotate upon the pin 4 is a sleeve 7 and connected to said sleeve is an arm 8 having an angular member 9 on which is pivotally mounted a sleeve 10 having a projecting finger rest 11. Connected centrally to the sleeve 10 is a tube 12. From one end of the sleeve 10 an inclined arm 13 extends and at the upper end of said arm is a concaved finger rest 14.
The razor blade clamp 15 is designed to be permanently connected to the blade 16 and connected centrally to the clamp 15 is a pin 17 adapted to fit within the tube 12 and to permit the rotation of the pin 17 for re versing the blade 16 whenever desired. A finger or tappet 18 projects outwardly from the sleeve 7 in the path of the clamp 15 when thrown upward by pressing upon the finger rest 11.
The operation of my razor sharpener may be briefly described as follows: When the pin 17 is placed in the tube 12, the bevel of the blade 16 will rest upon the stropping disk 5 at the required angle. By placing the finger in the concaved finger rest 14, the blade is carried around by circular movement in the path of the arrow a in Fig. 2 for any number of revolutions required to sharpen a blade upon one side. Whenever it is desired to reverse the blade, by pressing down upon the finger 11, the blade is thrown upward and the tappet finger 18 strikes the corner of the clamp 15 and reverses the blade. Further rotations are then made to sharpen this side of the blade as will be understood. Vhen it is desired to strop the blade on the finishing side of the disk 5, the sleeve 7 is removed from the pin 4; and the disk 5 is inverted, after which the sleeve 7 is again replaced upon the pin 4 and rotations of the blade are again made in the manner already described.
It will be obvious that my razor blade sharpener may be readily provided with means for holding any form of safety razor blade and that the blade may be quickly sharpened by the rota-tive movements of the blade holder.
I claim:
1. A razor blade sharpener comprising a circular base plate provided with a central vertically projecting pin, a circular stropping disk placed upon said plate, said disk being provided centrally with a circular opening to allow said pin to project through the disk, a sleeve slidably mounted on the pin, said sleeve being provided with an angular arm projecting horizontally above the said disk, a sleeve pivoted on the outer end of said arm, an inclined tube connected to the last mentioned sleeve, a blade holder provided with a pin projecting into the lowerend of the tube, a t-appet secured to the sleeve on the pin, said tappet being disposed in the vertical line of movement of the blade holder, a reversing finger integral with the sleeve on the said arm for reversing the blade, and a finger rest for rotating the blade, said finger rest comprising an inclined arm integral with the sleeve on said horizontal arm and projecting in an upwardly inclined position from the outer end Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner said plate through said disk, an arm rota tably secured upon said pin, a sleeve pivoted upon said arm, a razor blade holder pivoted in a tube connected to said sleeve, a tappet secured to the pin, means for throwing the edge of the blade holder against said tappet for reversing the blade holder, and means for revolving the blade about the pin as a center. 7 y
