DOOR ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug.27, 1912.
Application filed November 2, 11910. Sendai No. 590,281.
To all whom may comm:
Be it known that I, OSCAR KLONOWE-R, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, .-county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Door Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide an attachment for doors of theaters, lecture room-s, churches, ofiices and similar places, whereby said attachment may be shifted to prevent persons fnom entering the place in question but will allow of easy exit of persons desiring to leave the place in question.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an attachment of the class described, which may be shifted, so as to per mit a door to be'opened from either side.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a device for locking said attachment, whereby the same may be relatively locked to shifted position and to provide auxiliary means for permanently locking the device to shifted position.
Other objects of the present invention relate to the providing of general details of construction and arrangement of par-ts as will hereinafter more fully appear.
The invention consists of the improve ments hereinafter described and finally claimed.
The nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention will be inore fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof and in which: Figure 1, 1s a fragmentary view of a door I in cross-section, illustrating the shiftable attachmentof the invention in application thereto, Fig. 2, is a view in front elevation of Fig. 1, Fig. 3, is a view in elevation looking at the rear of the plate illustrated in Figs. 1, and 2.
It is very desirable that the entrance doors to theaters, lecture rooms, churches, ofiices and similar places be closed at certain times to persons desiring to enter such places, but be free for ready exit to persons within such places. To this end, I have designed an attachment whereby when desired, the door exterior will be free of protruding knobs or handles. In other words, I have designed a shiftable element equipped with a pair of knobs, so arranged that when desired the attachment may be shifted so that the knob upon the door exterior comes flush with and does not protrude from the said door exterior.
Incarryingout the invention, use is made of generally rectangular metallic or other plates 1, and 2, which may be secured to the door 3, by means of screws or the like 4. Passing through the plates 1, and 2, and the door 3, is a shiftable element 5, of circular cross-section. One end of this shiftable element 5, that is the end corresponding to the door exterior is equipped with a disk like knob or handle 6. This knob 6, may be formed integral with the shiftable element 5, or be otherwise secured thereto, and is beveled as at 7., so as to seat itself within the counter-sun-k-portion 8, of the plate 2, when in the position shown by full lines in Fig. 1. When in this position, obviously a person desiring to open the door 3, from the outside can find zno handle or knob by which to pull open the door. In this connectionit will be understood that a door check or similar device not shown in the drawings or forming part of this invention is present, for normally keeping closed the door.
A description will now be given of the device for relatively locking the shiftableelement 5, as above described Shiftably mounted upon the inside of the plate 1, see Figs. 1, and 3, is a spring controlled bolt 9, the upper end of which passes through a keeper or guide 10, and the lower end of which is provided with a knob on the knob 6, is flush with the plate 2. Should it be desired to permanently lock the bolt 9,
with either of the slots 13, or 14, of the shiftable member 5, the same may be accomplished by placing a key in the keyhole 15, of the plate 1, and shifting the bolt 16, of the look 17, into the position shown by dot ted lines in Fig. 3. Inother words, the bolt 16,- is shifted into engagement with the bolt 9. When in this position, should the bolt 9, be registering with the slot 13, of the shiftable member 5, the knob 6, upon the door exterior and the knob 18, upon the door interior will be in the position shown by dotted lines, in Fig. 1, and the door too would present the appearance of being equipped with an ordinary pair of handles or knobs. As clearly illustrated, the plate 1, isprovided with a key 19, and the shiftable member 5,with a' key-way 20,;to prevent said shiftable member 5, from turning.
To prevent the shiftable member 5, from v being shifted too far to the right from Fig.
1, it is provided with a collar 21, which is adapted to abut against the plate 1, whenthe slot 13, comes into alinement with the vertically shiftable bolt 9. The knob or handle '18, may be secured to the shiftable member 5, by means of a screw, or the like 22. I a a It is thought, that the 0 eration of the above described {door attachment will be clearly understoo'd without resorting. to a I to a door comprising an endwise shiftable further description thereof. It may be further remarked that the above described door-attachment is applicable to all doors where it is desired to prevent persons from entering and yet being free to permit of ready exit. This is particularly true to exit doors to fire escapes. In such cases, while it is desirable that a person from the out side cannot open said exit doors that the said door be free of all looks or bolts for provlding' ready exit. By the above descrlbed device, While the door not locked, it positively prevents unauthorized persons from enteringa building. j What I claim is:
1. An attachment adapted for application to a door comprising an endwise shiftable element extending entirely through said door and equipped at each end with a door knob, the outer face of one ofsaid door knobs being arranged to come flushwith the outer surface of said door and means for holding said element in shiftable positlon.
2 An attachment adapted for application element equipped with knobs one of which is capable of coming flush with the door surface, means for preventing said element from turning, and means for preventing said element from being shifted.
3. An attachmentadapted for application to a door comprising an endwise shiftable element equipped with knobs one of which bolt for cooperating with said shiftable element for holding the same in shifted position carried by the other plate.
5. An attachment adapted for application to a door comprising an-endwise shiftable element equipped with knobs one of which is disk-shaped, a pair of plates for said door through which said element moves one of said plates being counter-sunk to receive said disk-like knob and the other plate having keyed relation with said element,'a vertically movable spring-controlled bolt carried by the other plate, said bolt being adapted to cooperate with slots in the shlftable element for relatively lockingthe same and means for positively locking said element against shifting.
In testimony whereof, ,I have hereunto signed my name.
