To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, DiiLAvAN WV. llonsn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented eertain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Pullers or Con'ie-Alongs; and 1'. do hereby declare that the following is a full, elear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numbers of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to llllPl'OYQlllQlltS in that class of wire pullers used by electricians and others in drawing wires through aconduit or for stretching wire wherever required.
The object of the invention is to afford an exceedingly simple and strong device, capable of being adjusted to different sizes of wire or steel tape and so constructed as to tirinly grip and engage the wire without injuring the same.
it is also an object of the invention to atlord a construction capable of permitting the operator using both hands in pulling and also to all'ord a construction in which any suitable grappling means may be engaged to the come-along to apply power thereto, if desired.
In the preferred form of my invention shown in the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of a device embodying my invention, showing the same in use. Fig. 2 is a section thereof on line 2-9 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on line 4t4e ofFig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section on line of Fig. 1.
As shown in the drawings: The body or base plate of the puller comprises a metallic plate 1, of any suitable material, conveniently cast or forged metal, which, as shown, is relatively broad at its rear end and tapers forwardly to a relatively narrow neck 2, which connects integrally with the transverse handle 3, which, as shown, is convexly carved on its forward side and extends equal distances on each side of its connection with the base plate. Said ends of the handle are flanged on opposite sides along the rear edge to afford va broad bearing for the hand of the operator, said flanges 4, being milled on their outer or convex faces to prevent slipping of the hands. verse flanges or ribs 7 and 8, are provided on one face of said base plate and fitting closely therebetween and riveted to the base plate is a hardenedsteel block 9, ,the inner face of which is substantially in alinement with the slot or notch 16 through the flange (5, at the rear end of the base plate, as shown in Fig. 1. l ntcgrally connected with the base plate and slightly at the rear of said block 9, and directed with the axis thereof toward the center of said block, is a sleeve 10, which, as shown, is slotted transversely, as is also the base plate, to receive through said sleeve and co-axially therewith, the milled nut 11, through which is engaged a threaded shank v12, which at its inner end directed toward the block 9, is provided with parallel yoke arms between which is pivoted the eccentric jaw 13. This, as shown, is milled or roughened on the side adjacent the block and is at all times held in position to engage the block by means of a spring 141, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
The operation is as follows: Having properly adjusted the eccentric jaw 13, with reference to the block 9, by means of the nut 11, the wire is drawn beneath said jaw in the position shown in Fig. 1, and the spring throwing the jaw into firm engagement therewith, clamps the same against the block.

means of the handle, the greater the tension upon the puller, the more firmly the jaw 13, engages the same upon the block. The milling on said jaw is exaggerated for purposes of illustration. In practice, the face of the jaw is merely sufficiently roughened to afiord secure engagement with the wire.
Should it be desired to use tackle in connection with the puller, it may be engaged either to the handle in any suitable manner, or the tackle may be engaged to the device through the aperture 5, in which event the draft is applied to the device at the most ef fective angle to assure etlicient work. When operated manually, both hands may be com ployed, either on the handle or one at the handle and the other at the rear of the base plate. Of course, adjustment for varying sizes of wire may be quickly effected by means of the nut 11. The angle of the threaded shaft 12, with reference to the line of draft is such as to assure the most effective engagement with the Wire.
Details of the construction may, of course, be varied wlthout departlng from the prin- -ciples of this invention, and I therefore do not desire to limit the patent to be issued on this application otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. A wir puller of the class described embracing a base late, a notched flange on the opposite sides ot t-he rear end of said base plate, a tapered neck integral With the front end of said base, a'handle integral with the end of said neck, a flange on the opposite sides of the inner end of said neck, a shoulder on said base plate, a longitudinally adjustable bar on said base plate, a yoke on the'lower end thereof, and a spring pressed eccentric jaw pivotally engagedin said yoke and acting to normally bear against said shoulder.
2. In a device of the class described a base plate, a flange on the opposite sides of the rear end of said base plate, a tapered neck integral with the front end of said base, a handle integral with the end of said neck and a flange on the opposite sides of the inner end of said neck.
