. To all rwhom it may concern:
Be it knovvn that I, JOHN POWER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pueblo, in the county ot' Pueblo and State of Colorado, have invented certainl new and useful Iniprovements in Ingot-Molds, of which the following is 'a specification.
My invention relates to ingrat-molds for casting steel ingots and particularly to a mold having a double shell..
The inner Walls of a mold are worn quite rapidly by the action of the molten metal and alternate expansion and contraction to which it is subjected, so that `the mold becomes." misshapen or otherwise unsatisfactory in a short time and must be discarded.
The object of my invention is to provide a mold yin.\vhich an inner separable portion is subjected to the Wear and deterioration oi the casting operation While the outer p0rtion or jacket may be used repeatedly by renewing the innerlining or casting member. The outer steel jacket lis first east in the usual manner. being provided with cars or lugs 2, by which it may be lifted to strip the mold from the ingot. I also provide an enlargement or recess in the bore. at the Ibottom with an overhanging ledge Il along the sides as shown in Figs. 3, 5 and 8.
After the jacket 1 has been properly cleaned, it is'plaeed over u. sand-core 6, having the form of the steel ingots desired. The bottom of the steel jacket, which thus forms Specification of Letters Patent i Application led .Tune 1, 19122.V Serial No. 706,994.

A moldcavity is thus formed* between the jacket 1 and the Sandrone 6,-`w'hioh is connected by means of runner gates 20, with` the runner spout 22. The molten iron or steel poured through the runner 22, passes upwardly, vfilling the mold-cavity between the jacket 1, and the core 6,L and flanging over the top of the jacket. The cast lining 24, thus formed is secured within the jacket by means of the flange 25 at the top and the flanges 27 at the bottom. After the lining has solidified and cooled there will'be a shrinkage space of' about one-eightbinch between the lining and the jacket.. After the duplex ingot mold thus formed has been removed from the core and casting apparatus, shown in Figs. l and 2, it is then in the form illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, and,
after being cleaned is ready to be used for.

,As have previously pointed out, the interior wall 'Or cavity of the ingot mold is rapidly worn by the action of the molten metal poured therein, sothat an Ordinary mold is soon Worn out or rendered unsatisfactory. By my present invention, a double shell is provided constitutin a duplex mold, and the wear is principal y upon the inner lining Or casting member 24.
In order that the inner lining member may be readily removed from the outer jacket when it becomes Worn, I preferably form a weakened line or line of cleavage or demarcation 30, at the base of the flange 25, so that the flange may be easily severed. To effect a separation of the outer jacket, the outer jacket maybe supported upon an annular base 32, undera drop-hammer, and a blow from the latter upon the lining member 94, vwithin the line of demarcation will sever the flange 25 as shown in Fig. and permit the jackety tube-lifted clear of the lining. A new lining may be then cast -in the jacket in the manner previously de-v outer jacket and an inner liningy or casting' member having fiange' locking the outer and inner members togethel'nntilsaid flangee are removed from the inner member.
3. An ingot-mold, comprising an .outer jacket and'aninner lining o1,easting-mem berhavng a flange extending over the top of. the jacket, and a locking flange coperating with the.bott0n1 of the jacket, one of said flanges having a weakened joint at its junction with the lining.
4. A duplex ingot-mold, comprising. nn integral outer jacketv provided with a recess adjacent the lower end, and 111. inner lining member having a flange at its lower end engaging said recess and a flange at its upper end extending over the jacket and locking the lining thereto.
r5. A duplex ingot-mold having outer and inner member being provided with an 'upper marginal flange having a weakened portion o1' line of demarcation at its base.
