An object of the invention is to provide a foldable sanitary seat for removable attachment to water closets, to prevent the spreading of any infectious germs on the closet, to

the person using the same. For the purpose mentioned useis made of a foldable casing, a pliable seat contained therein, and means for removably securing the casing to acloset,- and the said seat being adapted to be withdrawn from the casing and returned thereto.

Referring more particularly to the various views, a casing 10 is provided consisting of parts 11 and 12, hinged to fold at 13. A shaft 15 is mounted to turn in the casing 10 and consists of hinged parts 16 and 17, and secured to the shaft 15 is a pliable seat 15. A rod 18 connects the shaft 15 with one end of the casing, the said rod being mounted to turn in a bearing 19 intermediate the end. 20 and a partition 21 of the casing. The end 20 is preferably provided with an opening or slot 22, and the bearing 19 and partition 21 are similarly provided with slots 23 and 24, so that when the part 11 is folded on the part 12, the part 11 will fit snugly owing to the slots' in the partition, the end and the bearing being adapted to re- =ceive the shaft 15, as will be easily seen in Fig. 6. A partition. 25 constitutes a chamber 26 at one end of the casing 10, and contained therein is a spring 27 secured to the shaft- 15. The shaft 15 has secured thereto a ratchet 28 adapted to be engaged by a pawl 29 actuated by a spring 30 and controlled by push knob 31. On the casing 10 similar slotted casings 32 areprovided, having therein compression springs 33, having one end thereof secured to an end l of the 'caslng and the other end thereof secured to a grip 34. hen it'is desired to secure the casing 10 to a closet the grips 34 are distended and disposed to secure the closet cover therebetween, the compression of the springs 33 being sufiicient to substantially securethe casing.

Assulning that the casing is in folded and closed position and itis desired to use the seat 15*, a handle 35 on the seat 15 is grasped and the seat is drawn from the casing, in a manner similar to the unwinding of a window shade except that the ma- ,terialconstituting the seat is folded, one

half over. the other, as will be seen in Fig. 4. 'As the seat is drawn from the casing, the pawl and ratchet mechanism described cooperate to prevent the seat from returning to the casing when the same is released,

and atthe same time the spring 27 is being wound. After the said seat 15 has been withdrawn from the casing, the said casing is opened, that is, the part 11 is unfolded from the part 12, and as will be readily understood the seat will then appear in open position and as conveniently shown in Fig. 1. The casing 10 is now attached to the (over of the closet, and the seat fitted to the closet as shown in Fig. 1 is in position. for use.

When it is desired to retire the seat within the casing 10, the parts 11 and 12 are first folded one upon the other and theseat is folded ,to correspond therewith. As the the seat is entirely within the casing, with but the handle 35 projecting therefrom and as will be easily seen in Fig. 7. In this manner a'convenient folding sanitary seat is provided adaptable to fit any closet and insuring absolute sanitary contact with the closet.

Although for the purpose of describing my invention I have shown a particular construction thereof, it will be understood that the scope of my invention is defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a seat, a casing therefor made up of a plurality of parts pivoted together whereby said parts may be extended in the same plane or may overlie each other, and means carried by each of the said part-s, whereby the said seat may be folded within the said par s.
