UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES KENNETH BARNES, OF PEARCE, ARIZONA.
VACUUM FILTERING-MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES KENNETH BARNES, a citizen of the United States, and
' is capable of removing the ore tailings and other solid or semi-solid particles from either dry or semi-liquid ore slimes.
The main or general object of the present invention resides in the provision of a gathering member which will present a maximum gathering surface to the slimes being worked and thereby greatly increase the out put of the separated tailings.
In the present instance. a single embodiment of my invention is disclosed wherein a series of separate annular leaves or gathering members are so constructed that suction chambers are formed on each of their flat surfaces, the outer or gathering surfaces of these chambers being of some suitable porous material which will permit the passage of fluid therethrough, but will effectually prevent the passage of any solid or semi-solid particles. By this structure it will be seen that a maximum gathering surface is presented to the material being worked, which makes it possible to treat large quantities of oreslime in a short period of time. K
Another object of the present invention is to construct each of the gathering members in a series of separate and independent sections, so that any one of said sections may be removed and a new one substituted without dismantling the entire gathering member. Each of these sections or segments is composed of a grooved body of suitable material' enveloped by a porous fabric, tightly stretched over and securely fastened to the body so that each section is provided with a series of chambers, the gathering surface of which is of porous material.
A further object resides in the provision of means for preventing the How of any liquid from the suction pipe into the gathering members. Further objects and advantages of the present invention will appear from the fol- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug, 20,1912, Application filed February 2, 1911. Serial No. 606,239.
embodying one form of-my invention.- Fig.
2 is a vertlcal sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic view of a pump. Fig. 3 discloses an enlarged detail view of a portion of one of the gathering leaves, showing one of the grooved segments with its porous outer wall removed and the means forsecuring the segments in place, together with the means for preventing a back flow of liquid from the suction pipe into the chambers of the gathering members. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the segments. Fig. 6 is detail view of a section of'the channeled rim; and, Fig. 7 is a fragmentary cross secti nal view of one of the gathering members.
Referring to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the different views, the numeral 1 indicates a frame work of any suitable construction supporting the receptacle or tank 2. This tank is designed to receive the dry or semi-liquid ore slimes and is therefore lined with a metallic sheathing, as at 3 to preserve the wooden walls of the receptacle. The side walls of the tank 2 are made to converge toward the bottom of the tank so that the drawing off or dischargin of the contents of the receptacle will be facllitated.
A pair of bearing blocks 4 are mounted on the frame 1 and are adapted to receive and support the rotating hollow shaft 5. Th s shaft is rotated by means of a gear 6 rigidly mounted on one end thereof and adapted to mesh with the worm gear 7, wh1ch is driven by anysuitable power transmitted to the pulley 8. The opposite end of the shaft 5 is connected to the pipe 9 which communicates with a combined suction and force pump 9, shown diagrammatically in Fig. 2 A series of annular flanges 10 are formed integral with the pipe or shaft 5, each of said flanges being provided with a central interior space divided into two chambers a and b by means of the diametrically opposite partition plates 11 which extend to and connect with the central shaft 5. The chambers a and b communicate with the interior of the .hollow shaft 5 through the medium of short pipes 15, each of said pipes I fro-m the chambers a and b and in order to liquid therethrough, but which will prevent prevent any back flow of the liquid from the chamber of shaft 5 into the chambers a and b and thence into the chamber of the gathering member 14, they are extended as stated above, beyond the center of the interior chamber of the pipe 5. Radially extending plates or blocks 12 extend from the two chambers a and b to the periphery of the flanges, the space between the adjacent blocks or plates being adapted' to receive the converging ends' of the segments 13 which comprise the gathering members 14.
Each. of the gathering members 14 comprises a plurality of segments 13 having grooved or corrugated flat surfaces as at 16 covered with a suitable porous material 17 adapted to permit the passage of air and the passage of solid or semi-solid particles. The grooves .16 on the flat surfaces of the segments form small chambers, the porous material constituting one wall of said chambers. These grooves preferably run parallel to each other and communicate with the two radial grooves 18 which in turn communicate with one of the chambers a or b.
By the above construction it will be seen that any suction created in the hollow shaft 5 by means of the suction pump will create a suction within the chambers a and b, and inasmuch as the grooves 16 of each of the segments are either in direct communication with the chambers aor b or in communication with one of the radial grooves 18, which in turn are in direct communication with one of the said chambers, a suction will be created in the chambers throughout the entire gathering member. l The outer ends of each of the partition blocks or plates are provided with a screw threaded bore 19, see Figs. 3 aud t, wherein one end of the fastening rods 20 are. secured, the opposite ends of said rods being securely fastened to the flanged rim 21. This rim is made in sections, the adjacent sections being connected by small reinforcing plates 22, through which the outer ends of the rods 20 pass.
In the construction of the gathering members, the separate segments may be made of wood or other suitable material and the grooves 16 formed in any deslred manner, the only requirement being that each groove communicate with one of the chambers a or b.
From the above description the operation of my invention will be seen to be as follows. Enough slime is first placed in the tank or receptacle 2, so that the lower half 'of the gathering members 14 will extend therein. The driving means and the suction pump are then started, so that as the gath: ering members 1 1 revolve, a strong suction will be created therein in the manner heretofore described. The solid and semi-solid particles of the slime will be attracted. to the gathering members and held thereon by the suction, While the water or liquid will pass through the porous covering of the gathering member and thence into the hollow shaft 5 through the pipes 15. After acake or covering of tailings of sufficient thickness has been gathered on the members 14, the remaining slime in the receptacle 2 is drawn off through one of the pipes 23, and-a volume of wash water forced into the receptacle 2; through which the gathered cake will be thoroughly washed. When the cake has been washed sufliciently, the water is drawn from the tank 2. The action of the suction pump isthen. reversed and a blast of air forced into the gathering members whereby the gathered material will be blown OE and deposited in the tank or receptacle 2 from where it is removed in any suitable manner. The above operation will then be repeated.
What is claimed is 1. In a machine of the character described, the combination with an open receptacle for the material to be filtered, of a gathering member comprising a plurality of radially disposed separate sectors, their gathering surfaces having intersecting grooves, a porous covering for said sectors whereby a plurality of chambers will be formed on each of the gathering surfaces of the sectors and asingle means for alternately withdrawing the air from each of said chambers and forcing air into said chambers.
2. In a vacuum filtering machine, the combination with an open receptacle for the material to befiltered, a hollow rotatable shaft having a. series of hollow annular flanges arranged-parallel across the axis of said shaft each forming a central chamber about said shaft-, of a radially disposed gathering member carriedby each of said flanges having. chambers in communication with the said central chambers and means for establishing communication between the said central chambers and the interior of the hollow shaft, said means, of communication comprisingtubular extensions across the center of the hollow shaft, adapted to rate means establishing communication between the interior of the hollow shaft and each of the first named chambers, said means arranged to prevent back flow of liquid.
4. In a vacuum filtering machine, a gathering member, comprising a plurality of separate, radially disposed removable sectors, and means for holding said sectors in position, each of said sectors having central, radial grooves and on each side of said grooves and parallel-thereto, a plurality of grooves,. and furthermore a radial groove intersecting said parallel grooves and situated adjacent each straight edge of said sectors.
'5. In a vacuum filtering machine, the combination with a gathering member comprising a plurality of radially disposed separate removable sections, of a channeled rim engaging the periphery of said sections, and means for removably holding said rim and sections in assembled position.
6. In a vacuum filtering machine, the
combination with an open receptacle; of a hollow'shaft having annular flanges; a plurality of annular gathering members, each comprising a plurality of removable sectors engaging the flanges of said shaft; a plurality of grooves in each of said sectors, said grooves runnin in thelength direction of said sectors esta lishing communication between the periphery of the sectors and the hollow part of said shaft; a porous covering for each of said sectors; means for securing said sectors to'said shaft flanges comprising wire spokes, nuts, washers and grooved rim composed of a plurality of fellies engaging the periphery of the sectors; and a reversible air pump connected with one end of said hollow shaft adapted to alternately create suction and pressure in said shaft and in the grooves of said sectors.
