Specification of Letters Patent.A
'Patented Aug. 20, 1912.
Application filed February 9, 1912. serial No. 676,598.' l
To-aZZ whom t may concern Be it known that 1,' FRITZ L. ANDREmda citizen ofthe United States, residing at .the city of Chicago, in .thecounty of Cook and State of Illinois; have V'invented .a new and 'use-fulf Improvement in Bed-Couches, Iot
which the following is a specification.
Myninventionrelates to articles of furniture in which an upholsteredjsofa may be.
changed from itsuse as suchinto a bed providedwith a suitable set .of 'spr1ngs.' In
thesej-devices. the sofa seat `may be inverted and .the bed springs are 'concealed 1n the body of the sofa under the seat with a'v space to hold the mattress and bedding.
It is the object ofmy invention to providev a piece of furniture of this class in which the relatively movable parts are so balanced with .reference .to each other lthat they may be movedwwith slight Veffort to make the changes, I[and also-to providean improved device ibywhich the top and body portions4 of the sofal may be hinged togetherl and at.. the sa-me time be lgiven a smooth and uni-' form' .lateralmotion while being unfolded.
The principles of trated in the drawings,` in which-- folded or Figure 11 Irepresents a cross section `of my improved bed couch when open for use as"v a bed; F1g..2 v1s a similar section showing thesame closed for usefas a` couch; Fig. 3 is a top view of Fig. I1.showingthe attachment of the "bed springs; Fig. 4 is a vView similar .to Fig 2 .with/the top partially opened; Fig'. .5 is .a v.detailj of hinge connection. I.
Further. `describingI my invention 4with reference to the drawings, in' {which like and 8. Rail 7 is supported inthe position shown in Fig. 1 by cranklevers 9 and 10 whichare pivoted at their upper ends to the rail and at the lower ends to the sofa. body.
TheI crank lever 9 is extended downwardly fromthe lower pivot to form a short arm 11 attached by means of a pivot 11 acting in 1 the slot' 11 to the shift lever'12,rwhich in my invention are illus-` turn lis pi-vcitedto the sofa body at'13; The end rail 8 is pivotally attached in Aamanne'r similar to thatalready' described by means ofthe crank lever 15 whiclrhas adownwardly projecting .arm 15, while the inner end .of the rail 8 is connect-ed to the rail v7 '-bya bridge piece 25. AThe vallinementfof, said
rails'a-nd the lbridge piece is eftected'by two members 26. and'29 each preferably provided with ' stops orianges 26 and 2 9 and pivoted together at3l. `The .member 29 is pivotally 2 54 and themember 26 is pivoted .at 8 to 27. .When the'two members 26 and 29 are exthe upper .faces of 2 5 and. 8`the-y .form 4a toggle joint which :holds therails7 and 8 .and gthe connecting ypiece25 inrigid 4alinement. .One end', of a connecting vrod 16is pivotall-y attached to 15 at `15 and the other end .is pivoted at 17 at the point at 'which the crank. leverlO-is attached to the attached at 30 to the end-of the bridge piece vtended so that the stops 26 and 29 .rest on end rail 7. A coiled spring 20'has one end Y attached at .the point 17 and the other end tos'the l.pivot bolt 13 of .the shift .lever 12.
Another :coiled spring 21 has one end attached 'to theend ofthe bed frame and the other to the s h'ft lever. The foregoing description represents a device which is p'rovided in .duplicateat .each .end .of the couch and which said devices are connected 'by longitudinal bars v18-19` to each other,
which with the .end and body pieces form the frame work by .which are supported the bed springs- 31. A longitudinal brace 31 should be extended centrally between the two end bridge pieces. 1
My improved device for hinging the parts togetherconsists of a plurality of members 32 and-33 pivoted together midway of .their ends 34. One end of 33 is pivotally at tached to alink 35 which is rigidly secured to the top member ofthe sofa, while the other end of said member 33fis vpivoted-to the `free or swinging end of a link 36, which:
is pivoted at 37 to the body portion of the sofa'. -In like manner member 32I has one end pivoted to the link 38 rigidlyl attached' to the body `of the sofa," while theother end' is pivoted to the .swinging link 39 whichis in turn pivoted aty 40 t'o the top portion lof the sofa. The .construction is best shown in Fig. .4. Iffrom this position thetopfis turned outwardly Ato the position shown in Fig. 1 (and as enlar edin Fig. 5), the members 32 and 33 will e extended turning on the pivot 34,' whereby the front' pieces of `the sofa will be extended andspaced fromv -each other. When the topis turnedV in the otherv direction 'as shown in;Ii`ig. 2 the, said members will be turned on the pivot so that 438 will. be
the stationary bracket-s and y substantially alined with each other inside the now closed body portion, permitting the ltwo finishing pieces to rest edge to edge with for by their outer faces 'flush `with 'each other. This action of the two vmembers 'provided the attachment ofth'efr'ee'ends to the swinginglinks 36 and 39 by Ywhichthey are 4permitted to-act in accordance-'with the movement ofthe swinging sofa'portion.
When the parts described are'inthe p osition shown in Figl1 and the outer 'o'rswing-y ing portion is lifted the tension'of spring 2 0 i acting through .the crank. lever() andthe with the free or swinging lever 12, whereby the slotted' end will be ,forcedagainst the actionfof spring 21 past lrigid stop.
connecting rodfl aids inthe initial portion of the'lift.' fTh'e apparatus on the .stationary portion -begii'is to revolve on the pivots 9 under thetension of vthe spring and later under theinfluence of gravity, until the swinging portion takes the position 'ap-i proximately shown in Figi/JE.v l-At this point the end railS will drop fromvits own weight,
folding its'e f on the swinging portion', causing Fthe toggle joint, composedof members 30 26 and 29, to be broken, and allowing the bar 8 to fold over toward its final position in which it is spaced'from 7 by thebridge piece 25.- Meanwhile the pivot 17 will `contact the deadcenter, permittin the crank lever 9 to swing downwardly into 'the position shown in Fig. 2,' at which pointl the engage-v ment of pivot-11. in the 'slot y11 acts as a It will be noted that the said slot -provides means by. which thecircular i aidedV by the tension A 21-,while the final movement is retarded, by
` .the ylower arm 1574s checked by its attach` movement of crank lever 9 vis'ee'ct'ed, while retaining `engagement with the shift '.le-
In the initial reverse movement Of' thparts from pbsition in Fig. 2 the action is of both springs 2 0 and the action of said springs. 4At the same time the complete extension of-bar .8 is made as ment through connecting rod 16 with crank fportion movable the combinat-'on on the top part, albed sectionfon'thev body t ing'a crank-lever having-a long and a short l and having a the short arm of'said crank-levenand means' lever V10.
