Specification of Letters Eatent. Patened?, Aug, 209 1912,
Application led .april 7, 1911. Serial No. 6158.520.
To all lwhom t muy concern:
Be it known that l, ANDREW S. Canincnoss, a citizen of t-he United States, residing atl St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in- Peat- Drying Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in drying apparatus `designed particularly for drying peat, and consists in the features of' construction and combination hereinafter described and claimed. -v
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of my improved 111- vention partly broken away; Fig. 2 is I'a similar viewl of the outlet end of the apparatus; Fig. 3 is a top View of the feed chamber of the apparatus; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the beatinof mechanism arranged inside Y the feed cham ier, partly broken away; Fig. 5 is a section on line .1iw Iof Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a section on line y--g/ of Fig. 1; Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section of a portion of steaml pipe forming part of my invention; Fig. 8l
is a perspective view, broken away, ofthe outlet conveyer of my invention; and Fig. 9 is a pers ective' view, broken away, of the outlet en of the drying chamber.
Referring to the drawings A represents a vertical feed chamber. Vertically disposed within the feed chamber is a sli-aft 2 journaled a't its upper end in skeleton framework 3 aeross'the top of the hopper, and at its lower end in the frame-work 4 supported above the boiler 5. The shaft 2 carries a plurality of beater arms 6, which extend Ioutwardly` between the intermeshing arms 7 projected inwardly from the side wall of the feed chamber. The arms .6 and 7 are referably o positely inclined as shown `1n Fig. 4 in or er better to treat the materia-l asJ it passes through the chamber. A tube 8 leads from the lower end of a drying chamber 9. Within the tube or conduit 8 is journaled a screw conveyer 10, which carriesat its feed chamber end a plurality of beater.
arms 11. The conveyer shaft at the outlet end of the conduit also carries a plurality of beater arms 12 which work between inwardly extending arms 13 carried by the wall of the tube. v The drying chamber`9 is rotatable within the inclosing casing 14 and rests upon the anti-friction rollers 15.
l'Vithin the drying chamber is ay spiral steam pipe 16v connected with the boiler outside the inlet end of the drying chamber by means of a pipe 17. The opposite end of the steam coil 16 is connected with a discharge pipe 17a which may lead back to the boiler, as indicated in Fig. 1. Carried within the drying chamber by the steam coil are a plurality ofV blades 18 which serve to throw the peat. away from the sides of the chambei' toward the center thereof and feed the saine forward as the chamber and vcoil revolves. vThe dischargeend of the drying chamber opens into ay hopper 19 from which leads the discharge .conduit 20. The discharge conduit 20 contains a screw conveyer y21, the shaft of which sup orts at the outer end of the conduit a plurality of beater arms 22 which -work between inwardly extending arms 23 carried by the conduit.
Aisshown in Fig. 1, the combustion chamber of the boiler furnace leads int-o the casing 14.J underneath the drying chamber, whereby the products of combustionv vpass under the drying cham-ber and into the open discharge end thereof, whence they pass through the drying chamber and outward through the discharge pipe 24 to assist drying the material.
The different operative parts are operated as follovis: Su ported upon the outer end of the shaft o ythe screw conveyer 10 is a drive pulley 25 adapted to be driven from a suitablel source of power. rlhe shaft of the screw conveyor 10 outside of said drive pulley has bevel gear and shaft connection 26 with the lower end lof the shaft 2 journaled within the feed chamber. Centrally mounted upon the outer end of the supporting, shaftv of the screw conveyer 21 is a pulley 27 adapted to be driven from a suitable source of power. The shaft of the screw' .conveyor 21 carries at its inner end a pinion 28 intermeshing with the pinion 29, which in turn meshes with a toothed ring 30 surrounding the dryin chamber; whereby the drying chamber wil be rotated as the screw conveyor 21 is rotated. In Fig. 7 is shown the connection between the steam pipe 17 and the spiral steam coil pi 16. It will be seen that the pipe 17 exten s into the end of the pipe 16, and a steam tight joint is formed by meansl of the gland 31 and sleeve 32.-? A
When the actuating parts are in operation the material to be dried is fed into the top of the feed chamber A, and in passing through this chamber is beaten up or macerated by the coperating beater -arms 6 and 7. From the feed chamber the peat is carried by the screw conveyer 1 0 to the drying chamber, and in its passage is further beaten up in the conveyer by means of the beater arms 11 and the coperating beater arms 12 and 13. The material is conveyed through the drying chamber by means of the steam coil 16 and the blades 18 coperating with the rotatable drying chamber, and in its passage is thoroughly dried by means of the steam heated coil 16, and the hot products ofcombustion passing from the boiler furnace through the drying chamber. From the drying chamber the material passes into the hopper 19, to the discharge pipe 20 through which it is carried by means of the screw conveyer 21, working therein. In passing through the 'pipe 20 the dried material is further beaten up by the coperating beater arms 22 and 23. f'
I claim as my invention:
1. A drying apparatus of the class described, comprising a feed chamber, bcating apparatus arranged within said feed chamber, means for actuating said beating apparatus, a boiler and furnace, a rotatably supported drying chamber connected with the chamber of said furnace, a screw conveyer connecting said feed chamber and drying chamber, a steam coil within said drying chamber, a connection between said steam coil and boiler, and conveyer blades supported by said steam coil.
