UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELECTRIC FURNACE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 6, 1908.
Application filed August 28, 1906. $eria1No. 3B2,40i-L Toall whom' it may concern.-
citizen of the United States, residing at liittsbur ,in the county of Allegheny and State of ennsylvanimhave invented newand use ful Improvements in Electrical Furnaces, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to are roasting;- furnaces.
- I apply in my furnace a gaseous heat-carrier, sue-1 as a r or steam, which is super-- heated by passing it through an electrically heated fire box. The furnace and fire-ho): are lined with retracting material, such as 21- good variety of porcelain or lire brick. and
'preferably, the fire box is so shaped and placed and the source of heat tl'ierein so situated that heat rays thereupon are projected Substantially directly into the interior of the tubular 'f'uniace. The heated air .01
' steam is moved tl'irough the lire box into the furnaceeither by pressure or suction. The latter is .ire'ferrcd.
Descri ing now in detail the best embodi- "mentof my device 0i which I am at present aware: Figure 1 a vertical section of my invented device, and Fig. 2 is a side elcvotion' there-oi". Fig. is a cross sect on on line X-X. Fig. i is a plan'vi w and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of ii. inorlifii'zd form of my invented device.
ng tubular character, and. r euo'ported. and. rotated in a suitable manner. in the drawit rests upon rollers m, m, m, m, and is t 6. [it its: for; .1 and the lire driven bye. chain on the sproclining C: of a su l. si;-an that will. rel heat, such as a ,g'rm-d variety of porcelain or fire brick.
A chute 4 leads the ore into thev furnace. A
' series of ports 8, discharge the ore. These are arranged. along the cylindrical lornace body A. Any one or more of theee ports ma. be selected. as the discharge port or ports. hey are so made preferablythat e. pocket is formed. at each portion which. the roasted ore is collected through any suitable valved door,- not shown in the drawing, which does not allow the entcmd ore to escape back into the furnace, and from which the ore can The body A of the h rnace is of the rev ol'v I Be it known that 1, ROBERT ltlcliiw'ioi-i'r, 1:.
'tion, the tines 12-3. 13, are om Pi roasted ore and. the colic removed withoutadmitting much colcl air 1 o the'lurnace. The fines 13, 13 are .ilaceil between the fire'brick lining and tho sllcll of the fiii'imce, with inlet ports '15, 15. These lines load to the liro-box. i-M1oloctric are or series oil: arcs is formed as between the electrodes g, g, g and It, It, 7)., in the drawing. These electrodes can be ordinary carbon electrodes and prc'l'cmlil arc cased ill the casing is which servos to vrolm-t lilwin from Contact. with the air, and of 1;. suitable 11011 conductw of cli. ctr i(.-it such as porcelain; 'lhc fume esoiiw pipc l sci to carry oil the volatilize-(l products oi the roost. lt iivf ralily opens into the box The c.\'-. luiust [an 13, serv to carry oll' if 0a "1. from the turner-- and at tl draw oil the hen box into and thro ygh the, it. A modification. o shown in Figs. l in vi 2.
admitted into the iiro-l '7, 7 n single port *5. i.
iii; pc- A much, cheaper and simpler pensed with. and elluiient device 15 thus rorhlced, but one two than in which I. coneidor much ices preferred form.
The furnace can be operated in vflrlmie ways. The way in which I opi-rrai-c it in Practice is as follows: 1 ass on electric cur-- rent throi'lgh the elect-mo g, g, g and [la 13 ,21, and heat thoroughly the fire-box thou I. be gin to pass the heated air or steam through the luri'mce until by its pa. ego and by the heat reflected from the lire-box., as well as'l If the heat carried. into the hi oi the by the mnvc' )Il currcii thus-Get 1.0. luriiacc is thorougrhiy liczitm l. .l thou tho orcinto the l'urnuco and pr-rrl'oim the omit-inning the passage of the hot am: or in into the fur-mime, and. (f-( )llE.(Jl/lllg and. iizohdensing in the vapors drawn oil', any
firebox, Jflaoed'at the end. of'said furnace body, a'n means for passing a: draft t iljfti'i'ugh the fire-box mm the furnace, substantially as .desoribed.
2. The combination with a rotating tu'bula'r-furnace bod of an electrically heated fire box having 811' stantiall y a colloidal silage, Y,
placed at theend of the tubular furnace two i. and means for passing 10" fire-box into the "fn 'rnaoe'; snbstanti'ally as described.
The combination, with a rotating tubular furimce body admittil'ig gaseous heat-carriers -and with electrodes in uxtaposltlon to produce an of 'z fire-bim. laced at the v end thereof and provided with inlet fluesfor 15 electric-zero or series of aro'sover-between 01' near which these heat-carriers pass substan}v tially as described.
4. The combination of a revolving furnace an electrically heated fire-box at the end t 1.1oreof and a series of ore'outlet' ports, situ.. ated along-the s aid revolving furnace and means-for closing s'aid ports; snbstantiallygs described. 7
