To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL OULLEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Stove, of which the following is a specification.
\ My invention relates more especially to that class of portable stoves constructed for temporary use, and the object of my invention, among others, is to provide a device of this class that shall be extremely simple in construction and elfective in operation.
A stove embodying my invention and in the construction and use of which the objects above set out as well as others may be attained is shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a top or plan view of my improved stove. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the same, the cover and damper being shown as nearly closed. Fig. 3 is a view in central vertical section through the stove, the cover and damper being shown more open than in Fig. 2.
It is often desirable to utilize heat. especially for drying purposes under conditions requiring a cheap and inexpensive apparatus but which at the same time shall be particularly effective, an instance of such use being in the drying of tobacco in sheds in which the tobacco is hung after being gathered from the field.
My improved stove illustrated and described herein meets to a marked degree the conditions required to be met under such circumstances as it enables the production of a portable, inexpensive device particularly effective in its operation.
In the accompanying drawing the numeral 5 indicates the body of the stove constructed of suitable material, preferably sheet iron, of any desired shape, preferably round, in cross section. This stove is preferably constructed in the form of a cylinder, and may be provided with handles 6. Supports 7 are secured to the inner surface of the stove, projecting radially therefrom, and a grate 8 rests upon these supports. This grate may be made of any suitable material, as iron, with holes 9 to permit draft through the combustible material placed upon the grate. Draft openings 10 may also be formed through the side of the stove above the grate.
Charcoal is commonly employed as fuel to be used in the stove and to secure the most effective results it is essential that some simple but effective means be provided for regulating the draft in order that an even heat may be obtained. The fuel burns much more readily when a fire is new and therefore requires little draft but it needs more draft the longer it burns in order to produce substantially a uniform amount of heat.
My improved stove embodies a structure in which this regulation of the draft may be obtained in a convenient and effective manner the structure being extremely simple. To obtain this result a threaded post 11 projects upward from one side of the stove and a combined cover and damper 12 has at one edge a screw threaded opening to receive said threaded post. In the preferred form of structure a reinforcement 13 is secured to the side of the stove, to which reinforcement the post 11. is secured and a block 14 is secured to the combined cover and damper to provide suflicient material for a thread to engage said post.
It will be noted that in the operation of the device by turning the cover on the stud 11 it is removed to uncover the opening into the stove and that by continuing the movement in the same direction by a single or a number of rotations the cover will be gradually raised or lowered and the opening 15 between the top edge of the stove and the under surface of the cover increased or decreased in size as may be desired.
I claim 1. A stove including a body, a combined cover and damper, a stud secured to and projectin from the edge of one of said parts anc having its end threaded, and the other part having a threaded opening at or near its periphery to engage said stud and constitute the axis of rotation of said cover.
2. A stove including a body, a stud projecting from the upper edge of the body, and a combined cover and damper having a threaded opening through one edge to engage said stud, to constitute the axis of rotation of said cover at the periphery thereof.
