Specificaton'of Letters Patent.

2, 8, and are thereby securely housed and protected from sleet,s1mw and any other danger that` might threaten to interfere with the free operation thereof. These members may be ot any suitable material but are preferably ot metal and have a sliding tit. in said tracks and they serve to carr v and guide the cleaner across the glass. These carriers may, if desired. see Fig. be provided with roler or ball bearings 7, but it is not necessary.
The cleaner, Figs. 1 and 3, may comprise a back 9, preferably in the form ot' a long, narrow member, provided at one face with a narrow lockingr strip 10, secured thereto as by screws 1l, to lock between said back and said locking strip a cleaner l2, ot` i'elt, rubber or any suitable material. Said cleaner 12 may be provided with laterally extending solts 13 so that it may be adjusted to or from the glass as required. To secure said cleaner to the carriers T, 8, we provide hangers 14, 15, which may be secured to the back t) by screws 16, slots 17 in said hangers permitting longitudinal adjustment thereof, if desired, relative to said back. The upper hanger 14 extends through a longitudinal slot or aperture 18 in the under side of the guide or track 2 and is received by a slot in the lower side oi" the carrier T, where it is shown, Fig. 3, secured by a scre\v 19. This screw' may be readily inserted and removed by sliding the carrier along the guide toward the right until the head of the screw is opposite the opening 20 in the rear lside of the guide 2, which permits a screw driver to bc inserted for that purpose. The lower hanger 15 is hook-shaped in form herein, also extends upwardly through a longitudinal slotor aperture 21 in the lower side of the guide 3 and enters a similar slot in the cari-1er 8 where it may be secured, if desired, but it is not necessary as it cannot become detached from the carrier 8 without first detaching the upper hanger from its carrier 7. In order to actuate said carriers to operate the cleaner we may secure to the ends of said carriers, by any suitable means, as herein by eyes 22, cords, chains or similar members 23, which may be counter-sunk in the ends of the carrier if desired to make the arrangement compact, carried over rolls 24, Fig. 4, at the ends of the guides 2, 3, .and herein mounted in said guides and thence "through the thence,1Fig. 4:, over rolls or pulleys 25 se- To all whom it may conce/a Be it known that we, Ernest-1 l. Lanus and FREDERICK C. Romxsox, citizens ot the and residents ot Portnind. liu l the county of Cumberland and Slate ot Maine, have invented an VImprovement in 'VVindowCleaning Devices, of which the following decription, in connection wit-h the accompanying drawings, is a speciticatitm, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
Our invention relates to window cleaning devices, and more specifically aims to provide an improved window cleaner for use particularly on electriocars, motor cars, pilot-housesoi Steamers and similar places United States,
from the glass rain, snow, sleet, dust, etc.
In the drawing showing an illustrative embodiment of our invention as applied to a conventional form ot window, as, tor iustance, a window ot a vestibuled electric ear, Figure l is an elevation ot' the out-side of such a window with our improved attachment secured thereto, parts thereof being roken away; Fig. 2, an elevation ot' the inside of said window. parts oi the frame beingl broken away; F a vertical section on the line 3-3 Fig. l; Fig. 4tan enlarged section detail on the line 4-4 Fig. l, looking down; Fig. 5 illustrates various modiications of the supporting guide or track; and Fig. 6 a moditication ot the carrier.
Referring first to Fig. 1, the window frame lpis` provided at two opposite edges thereof, and herein at its top and bottom, 'with guide supports or tracks 2, 2?, herein shown as hollow, tube-like members, secured, Figs. land 4, at their ends to posts Ll, se` cured in turn by means of plates 5, to the frame 1. The posts and plates ."i may, for convenience, be constructed integral with each other. The members 2, i5, may be tubuiar, or they ,may be llat plates rolled inte substantially tubular form, or they may be ot' any desired form in cross-section, see Fig. 5, and may, Fig. 4be simply received in apertures in the posts 4t, or they maybe 'threaded therein or otherwise secured thereto. The posts 4 are drilled, or otherwise provided with passages therethrough, and said passages are adapted to register with apertures 6 through the window trame. `Carriers or carriages 7, 8, of suitable form, and which herein are shown as substantially cylindrical, are mounted within said guides post. 4 and frame 1 Uiv vhandle 27 and herein gives the cured' 'n the recesses G of the window frames, to a drum 26, of similar member, provided with a suitable handle 27, and secured, for instance, conveniently to the car body.
"When it is desired to clean the glass of rain, snow, sleet o1' the like, one rasps the rum 26 a half turn and thereby moves the cleaner across the glass eflectually cleaning the same. The next time it is desired to clean the glass the cleaner may be moved back to its former position in the same manner or', of course, the cleaner may be moved across the glass asmany times as desired.. r)The drum may be inclosed in a suitable case'28, if desired, provided With Aan opening 29 to receive the handle 27,
Our improved cleaner combines the ad vantages of simplicity of construction with certainty of operation. The cleaner being securely held at both ends by the carriers, in position against the glass, is always pressed against the glass with sufficient pressure to cause it to remove the moisture more e'ectual/ly than would be the case if it were held against the glass' by spring pressure only. The slots intbe guides 2, 3, being 'on the lower side f said guides cannot become filled with l'snow and ice and the cleaner thereby rendered useless.
Doubtless modifications of the foregoing construction may be devised, for accomniishing the same pur ose, Without departing trom the spiritan scope of our invention.
Claimsz 11, A Window cleaning device comprising a laterally operative cleaning member, 'a
vback member secured thereto, carriers, hori zontal concealed tracks for said carriers,
