UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD BRAHAN, 0F GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN.
PIPE-WRENCH ATTACHMENT FOR MONKEY-WRENCHES.
Application filed September 6, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD BRAI-IAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Green Bay, in the county of Brown and State of WVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Piperench Attachments for Monkey-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The general object of the invention is to adapt a monkey wrench for turning cylindrical objects having smooth outer surfaces, such as pipes.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a monkey wrench partly in section and showing my improved device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section of one end portion of the wrench shown in Fig. 1 showing my improved device in projected position. Fig. 3 is a detail front elevation of the parts positioned as shown in Fig. 2.
a indicates the wrench and 5 and 6 the jaws thereof. The supplementaljaw Inhereinafter more specifically described, may be associated with either or both of the jaws 5 and 6 as desired. In order to illustrate one embodiment of the invention, however, I have shown the stationary jaw 5 adapted for connection to the supplemental jaw and having a recess 7 adapted to harbor the same, said recess 7 communicating with a recess 10 formed in the upper intermediate portion of the shank. The said recess 10 has its rear wall downwardly and outwardly inclined and adapted to be engaged by a portion of the supplemental jaw Z) for holding the said jaw against accidental movement, when in active position.
8 indicates the toothed edge of the supplemental jaw I) which, when projected beyond the inner surface of the jaw 5, cooperates with the jaw G to turn an object extending between the said jaws, it being understood that the jaws have first been adjusted so as to bear on the object.
The supplemental jaw Z) may be connected in any preferred manner so as to move independently of the jaw to which it is connected, such as by a pivot pin 9 passing through the wrench jaw and one end portion of the supplemental jaw I).
Then the stationary jaw is in its normal position it is completely harbored in the re- Specifieation of Letters Patent.

cess 7 and any suitable means may be employed to cooperate with the pivot or other support for holding the jaw in this position, such as a spring 10 one end of which abuts an extension 11 on one end of the jaw b.
Any suitable means may be employed for projecting the supplemental jaw I), such as a cam lever 12 fulcrumed as at 13 in the recess 7 so as to turn on a cam surface 14 on the inner side of the supplemental jaw Z). \Vhen the lever is turned to the position shown in Fig. 1, the spring will operate to hold the jaw b contracted. In this position, and assuming the wrench to be in upright position, it will be seen that the highest point on the cam surface thereof will be projected beyond the end surface of the wrench jaw. Vhen the lever is turned toward the front of the wrench the cam surface thereof riding on the cam surface of the jaw, will project the latter to the position shown in Fig. 2, in which position it will be seen that the jaw will be locked against inward movement.
Although I have shown and described one embodiment of my invention it is to be understood that I am not to be limited to the specific structure or arrangement of parts since various changes will be made, within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
WVhat I claim as new is:
1. The combination of a monkey wrench having a recessed jaw member, a pivoted toothed supplemental jaw member normally harbored in the recess of said jaw member and having a cam surface on its inner side portion, an extension formed integral with said supplemental jaw, means engaging said extension for holding said jaw in inactive position, and means adapted to cooperate with the cam surface formed on the inner side of the said supplemental jaw for projecting the said jaw member through the recess and into engagement with a portion of the shank for locking the same in its projected position.
2. The combination of a monkey wrench having a recessed jaw member, a pivoted toothed supplemental jaw member normally harbored in the recess of said jaw member and having a cam surface on its inner side portion, an extension formed integral with the inner free end of said supplemental jaw, a spring engaging the said extension of the jaw for holding the same in inactive posi- In testimony whereof I aflix my signature tion, and a cam cooperative With the cam in presence of two Witnesses. surface on the inner slde portlon of sald sup EDWARD BRAHAN.
plemental jaw for projecting the latter through the recess and into engagement With WVitnesses:
a portion of the shank for holding the same ROY EMPEY,
in active position. EDWARD POWERS.
