COMBINATION STEP-LADDER.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT F. BLAIR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Iiigonier, in the county of WVestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Step-Ladders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in step ladders and particularly to a combined step ladder, stair rod, and extension ladder.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a ladder with an adjustable support, the said support having both its leg members formed with a plurality of depressions or pockets, which are arranged for the reception of a swinging bail se cured to the ladder proper, and whereby the support may be adjusted at any desired position in relation to the ladder.

With the above objects in View, and others which will appear as the nature of the invention progresses, the improvement resides in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the drawings accompanying this specification, there has been illustrated a simple and approved ladder constructed in accordance with the present invention, it being understood, however, that the showing of the drawings is merely illustrative and that minor changes, as to form, proportion, material, etc., which fall Within the scope of the appended claim, may be made, if desired.

In the drawingsFigure 1 is a perspective view of the ladder constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same showing the support in an adjusted position to accommodate the ladder to an elevation, such as a step or the like. Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating the support swung and sustained upon the ladder. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view showing the manner of connecting the shelf to the ladder.

In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the ladder proper. This ladder is constructed in the usual form and comprises a pair of spaced legs which are connected with .the usual steps 2. The upper portion of the ladder is preferably provided with a metallic casting designated by the numeral 3, the said casting having one of its faces Specification of Letters Patent.

incut to form the shoulder 4. It is to be understood that one of the said castings 3 is provided upon each of the leg members of the ladder, and each of the said castings is formed with a longitudinally extending depression which adapted to receive the top step 5 of the ladder, each of the said castings 3 is provided with an opening 6, and the said openings are adapted to receive the inbcnt ends 7 of a substantially U-shaped bail S.

The numeral 9 designates the support or prop of the ladder. This support comprises a pair of spaced legs, the same being connected together through the medium of a plurality of rungs l0, and each of the leg members of the supports are provided with a plurality of depressions or pockets 11 within which is received the substantially U-shaped bail 8. These pockets are arranged diametrically opposite each other, and the said pockets are preferably reinforced through the medium of metallic members 12. The upper extremity of the leg members of the prop or support are beveled as at 14 to snugly engage with the substantially vertical rear edges 15 of the castings 3, while the upper portions 16 of the leg members of the support normally contact with the ledge or projections l of the said castings 3.

The supporting shelf, which is designated by the numeral 17 is pivotally connected with the leg members of the ladder proper, and the said shelf is sustained in a proper adjusted position, or in a position parallel with the top step 5. through the medium of a pair of pivoted links 18 and 19. These links are connected together by a rule or carriage joint so that when the shelf is arranged parallel with the top shelf the member 17 will be effectively supported, and whereby the said member 17 may be swung to a desired position upon the ladder when the said member is not to be used.

From the above description. taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that the supporting member 9 may be readily adjusted and sustained in said adjusted position upon the rear of the ladder if desired. and that it will be also apparent that the said support may be swung to the face of the ladder and effectively sustained thereon through the medium of the bail 8.

Having thus fully'described the said invention, what I claim is A step ladder comprising parallel legs and connecting steps, the upper extremity of each leg provided with a metallic casing having a rearwardly extending portion and provided on its upper inner edge with a depression or seat for the reception of one end of a top step, said metallic casings being further provided with horizontally alined openings, a second ladder comprising parallel legs and connecting rungs, said legs being equally spaced with respect to the legs of the first ladder and having their upper extremities'beveled on the forward side thereof so that said extremities will fit inbent so as to be received by and rotatably mounted in the openings provided in the metal casings on the first mentioned ladder,

said bail adapted to engage with the upper pair of pockets in the second ladder so as to hold the upper extremities of the legs thereof in position against the metallic casings on the first ladder, said second ladder also adapted to be placed in inverted position with its front side against the front side of the first ladder so as to form an extension thereto, the said ba-il adapted to be swung over the top of the first ladder so as to bring it into a position wherein it can engage with a pair of pockets in the second ladder and support the same, and said second ladder further adapted to be placed against the rear side of the top of the first ladder so that its upper extremity projects above the top step of the first ladder and being held in its position by the bail which engages with a pair of pockets in the second ladder.
