A UORPORA'IION OF NEW JERSEY.
KNITTED FABRIC.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 8, 1007.
Patented Ann. 13, 1912. Serial No. 377,894.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, lionnirr W. Score, a citizen of the United States, residing in Leeds Point, Atlantic county, New Jersey, have invented certain improvements in Knitted Fabrics, of which the following is a specification;
My invention relates to that class of knitted webs, either ribbed or plain, or partly ribbed and partly plain, which have certain wales discontinued, orhave wales of one face discontinued and supplanted by wales of the other face, the object. of my invention being to prevent runningbacl: of the terminal stitches of the discontinued wales.
in the accompanying drawings :-Figures 1 and 2 are exaggerated sectional views of pieces of ribbed fabric illustrating my invention; Fig. 3 is an exaggerated face view of a portion of the web shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a similar View of a portion of tin web shown in Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but illiiistrating a web in trated in Figs. 2 and i.
which discontinued wales oi. one face are supplanted by wales of the other face.
Re'lerring in the first instance, to Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawing, a represent the wales of one face oil the fabric, for instance those produced by the cylin-tler needles of a rib lmitting' i'nachine, and. a the rib wales or those produced by the dial needles oi such a machine, these Wales, in the webs illustrated, being those which are intended to be discontinued.
In order to prevent the running back of the terminal stitches a: of said discontiinied wales, 1 form a chain of said terminal stitches by engaging the terminal stitch of one discontinued walo Iwith that of an adjoining discontinued wa c through-- out the series, the terminal stitches being elongated for this purpose, as shown, and the final stitch of the series engaging with a rib Wale which is not discontinued, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5}, or with a Wale which, if discontinued, has its termi nal stitch a: merged into an adjoining stainling Wale, as illus 'lhis inter-looping or enchaining of the terminal stitches oi" the discontinued wles can be readily el fooled by employing in connection with the needles on which said terminal stitches are formed, an appropriate looping device minal stitch ot' the preceding wale, may be either returned to the needle on which it was formed so as to continue the formation of the single rib Wale, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, or may be transferred to the :HlJOiXling cylinder needle so as to be merged into the plain wale produced by the latter, as shown in Figs. 2 and t, or any other available means of retainin the final terminal stitch of the series may be adopted, without removing the web from the broad scope oi my invention. H
in the tabrie shown in l igs. 3 and 4 there is no substitute for the dlscontiiuied wales, but in the fabric shown. in Fig. 5
the discontinued rib wales are supplanted by wales c oi? the other face, these wales being produced by introducing cylinder needles to take the place of the dial needles which have been retired.
My invention is applicable in the production of knitted webs in which change is to be made from ribbed web to plain web, or to webs which are ribbed throughout, but in. which the clmrncter oi the rib in one portion is different from that in another portion, or even to plain webs in which it is desired to reduce the number of wales in one portion as eom nired with those in another portion.
