To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Janus O. MCCOY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manchester, in the county of Hillsbcro and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool Holders and Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to tool holders and heaters, and particularly to a device comprising a tool holding receptacle adapted to be attached to a gas or oil burner in which the knives used in the manufacture and repairing of patent leather articles may be placed during the heating op eration.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which possesses extreme simplicity of construction and which may be very cheaply manufactured.
Another object is to provide a tool holder and heater which, when applied to a gas burner, may be freely rotated thereon so that the device may be swung into any position to permit workmen to gain easy access to their knives. By virtue of the particular construction employed, economy of heat is attained and burning or scorching of the knife handles is prevented.
The device primarily consists of a metallic receptacle open at its top and one end i and containing at said open end a tool rest, the receptacle having a support for the metallic portions of the knives, said support further serving to prevent scorching of the knife handles in the manner hereinafter described. Below said receptacle is disposed a chamber, through which a gas burner tube passes and which provides the rotating means possessed by the device.
For a full understanding of the present invention, reference is to be had to the following description and to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved tool holder and heater. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the device. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device. Fig.
4 is an under plan view. Fig. 5 is an end View showing a portion of the tool rest broken away.
Throughout the following detail descrip tion and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
Referring now particularly to the drawmgs, 1 indicates a metallic receptacle of sufficient width to receive several knives or thor tools, placed side by side, the receptacle having a side wall 2, bottom 3, and
being open at the top and at the front end. Extending across said front end is a etallic strip 4 which serves as a tool support or rest and for the purpose of preventing the handles of the tools from coming. in contact with the heated bottom portion 3 of the receptacle. The bottom 3 is provided at a point near the rear of the receptacle with an opening 5 having a diameter of sufficient width to rather closely engage the outer end of a gas burner of the ordinary construction.
Disposed below the receptacle 1 beneath the rear portion thereof is a chamber 6, n'eferably c rcular in cross section, said chamber 6 having a bottom wall '1 and its upper wall being common with the bottom 3 of the receptacle. The bottom 7 is pro vided at about its central point with an opening 8 which. in practice, will be in vertical alinement with the opening 5 hereinbefore referred to. The opening 8 may be of substantially the same diameter as that of the opening 5 or it may be formed slightly wider, its purpose being to engage the lower portion of the vertical tube of a gas burner.
The manner in which the device forming the present invention is ap lied to a gas burner is best illustrated in l ig. 2. When mounting the device on a burner, the chamher 6' is placed over a gas burner 10 so that the opening 8 will pass over the outer tip of the burner. The device is then forced downwardly until the outer tip ll engages the edges of the opening 5 in the bottom 3 of the receptacle. The openings 5 and 8 are preferably made so that sufficient play will be given to the parts to afford rotation of the entire device on the gas burner in any direction. The fact that the burner tip 11 engages the bottom 3 in the manner described, prevents any tilting forward or backward of the device and maintains the same constantly in a level position.
Extending transversely across the receptacle 1, preferably the entire width thereof, is a wall 12, substantially parallel to the front tool support 4i, hereinbefore referred to. The wall 12 may be formed as an angle iron having a horizontal portion 13 adapted to be fastened to the bottom 3 of the receptacle. The wall 12 is provided with a plurality of notches 14 which, for the special purposes for which the present invention is designed, will be formed substantially V-shaped, in order to conform to the shape of a blade.
Vhen the device is in use, the burner will be lighted at 11 and several knives will be placed with their handles resting upon the support t and their metallic portions placed in the notches 14 of the wall 12, the edges of the knives being in substantially vertical alinement. By this means, heat will be communicated to the portions of the knives which it is desired to heat by the burner 10, such heated portions lying between the wall 12 and the wall 2, as will be obvious. A further oflice of the chamber 6 in addition to that just described with relation to the mountingof the deviceon the burner, consists in the fact that it serves as a heat storing chamber. The walls 3 and 2 of the receptacle 1 become highly heated during the operation of heating the knives and a large part of this heat is conducted to the chamber 6, which is an air chamber. The heat so conducted will be stored up in this chamber to a certain extent and after the device has been in operation for a time, the gas flame may be turned down so as to economize in the use of the gas, the chamber 6,, after it has stored up heat in the manner described, serving to radiate this heat. The wall 12 serves to prevent direct radiation of heat from the gas flame to the handles of the knives and prevents burning or scorching of the knife handles. This is effected by the'fact that the lower part of the wall 12, that is, the portion below the notches 14, is solid, and deflects the heat rays in an upward direction and keeps the rays away from the knife handles.
The device hereinbefore described may be constructed entirely from sheet metal and the parts secured together by ordinary rivets. It will be seen that no part of the device entails complication of workmanship informing the parts.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is:
l. A tool holder and heater consisting of a tool holding receptacle open at one end,
1 a tool rest at the open end of said receptacle,
a wall disposed across the bottom of the receptacle having means for engaging a tool, a portion of the bottom of the receptacle being adapted to engage the upper end of a gas burner tube, and a wall disposed below said bottom having a portion adapted to engage the gas burner at another point thereof, the engaging portion of said bottom and said burner tube serving to maintain the entire device level.
2. A tool holder and heater consisting of a tool holding receptacle open at its top and at one end, a wall disposed across the open end of said receptacle, a second wall disposed across said receptacle substantially parallel to said first mentioned wall, said second wall being connected to the bottom of the receptacle and having means for engaging a tool, a portion of the bottom of the receptacle being adapted to engage the upper end of a gas burner tube, a wall disposed below said bottom having a portion adapted to engage the gas burn-er at another point thereof, the engaging portion of said bottom and said burner tube serving to maintain the entire device level, and c011- necting means between said bottom of the receptacle and said last named wall.

A tool holder and heater consisting of a tool holding receptacle open at one end, a tool rest at the open end of said receptacle, a wall disposed across the bottom of the receptacle having means for engaging a tool, the bottom of the receptacle having an opening at a point between said wall and its rear side, and a chamber disposed below said bottom, said chamber having a bottom wall provided with an opening in substantially vertical alinement with said first named opening, the latter being adapted to engage the outer end of a gas burner tube to maintain the entire device level, the entire device being capable of free rotation on said burner tube.
4-. A tool holder and heater consisting of a tool holding receptacle open at its top and at one end, a wall disposed across said open end serving as a tool rest, a second wall attached to the bottom of the receptacle and extending across the same substantially parallel to said first mentioned wall, said second wall being provided with a plurality of notches to engage the edges of the tools laid thereon, the bottom of the receptacle .being provided with an opening'at a point between said second named wall and its rear wall, said opening being adapted to engage the outer end of a gas burner tube, and a chamber disposed below said receptacle, the
bottom wall of said chamber being provided with an opening at about its center in sub stantial alinement with said first named opening, said second named opening being adapted to engage the gas burner tube at another point thereof, the entire device being capable of free rotation on saidburner tube, substantially as described.
