SKIRT-MARKER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD Lnvm, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt- Markers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to a simple and inexpensive device for marking skirts at a desired distance from the bottom thereof, and one of itsmain features is an adjustable ring which surrounds a stand or platform upon which a person may stand in order that the skirt can be marked and afterward cut.

My invention comprises further features of improvement and combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described.

I will now proceed to describe my invention, in detail, the novel features of which I will finally point out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, wherein:

Figure 1 illustrates a side view of my improved device; Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the marking scale and adjustable stop; and Fig. i is a detail side view of a portion of the scale, the adjustable stop being shown in section.

As herein illustrated, my improved skirt marker comprises a base portion 1 having rigidly secured thereto a threaded post 2, to the upper end of which is secured a stand or platform 3, the said stand being immovably secured to the post. Upon the stand or platform 3 I mount a scale I, and upon the said scale I slidably mount a block 5 carrying a screw threaded stop pin 6, which is adapted to bind or secure the block 5 to the scale 4.

As can be seen in Fig. 1, the post 2 carries a threaded hub 7 which is rotatably mounted thereon and adapted for vertical move ment, or rather, movementlongitudinally of the post 2, when the said hub is rotated. The hub 7 carries a plurality of arms 8, which at their outer ends are turned upwardly. To the upper ends of the said arms 8 I secure a ring 9 the periphery of which Specification of Letters'latent.

is preferably sharpened as at 10, in order that a positive surface may be provided against which the garment will be pressed when the same is to be marked. The purpose of this device is to facilitate, as has been stated, the marking of skirts at a desired distance from the bottom, and in order to mark the skirt the person stands upon a platform 3 and allows the skirt to hang over the ring 9, the ring being on the inside of the skirt. A piece of chalk or other marking element is then passed around the skirt and exteriorly thereof at the point upon which the periphery of the ring 10 passes, with the result that a line is caused to appear upon the exterior surface of the skirt. The skirt can then be cut at the marked linc thereon.

The purpose of the scale 4, which is provided with graduations 7, is to determine at what height from the floor the skirt is to be cut, the platform 3 representing the floor. Should I desire to cut the skirt so that it will hang five inches from the floor, for instance, I would move the block 5 to the grad nation 5 and secure it in such position by means of the pin 6. After having set the stop, the person wearing the skirt will step upon the platform 3, the skirt being caused to hang exteriorly of the ring 9. After the person wearing the skirt is on the platform 3, I rotate the ring 9, and consequently the hub 7, and cause it to move upwardly until it contacts with the stop pin 6. The ring will then be in position so that the skirt can be marked in the manner above described. When the ring 9 contacts with the pin 6 a slight rotary movement will cause the ring 9 to jam against the said pin 6. The jamming of the ring 9 and pin 6 will hold the said ring stationary while the marking element is being passed around the skirt.

Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A skirt marking device comprising a platform, a graduated scale adjacent said platform, an adjustable stop carried by said scale, and means adjacent said platform, movable toward or away therefrom, and adapted to form a backing for a marking element, said backing element being adapted to contact with said adjustable stop, whereby the upward movement of the former is arrested.

2. A skirt marking device comprising a threaded post, a threaded hub carried by said post, a plurality of arms, carried by said hub, a ring carried by said arms, a platform adjacent said ring, a graduated scale carried by said platform and an adjustable stop, carried by said scale, adapted to con- 10 tact with said ring, whereby the upward movement thereof is arrested.
