Be it known that I, HELENA H. EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Pasa-dena, in the. county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Book Rests and Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in combined book rests and receptacles and it is particularly adapted for the holding of books in open condition when they are to be used and when the books are not in use the device is adapted to be folded to inclose and protect the same.

It is an object of the invention to provide a book rest and receptacle which is adapted to be unfolded and set up so as to receive and hold in position for reading, certain books and pamphlets which are to be read in connection with each other.

It is an object also of the invention to provide a book rest made up of folding casings and having a locking member interposed between them adapted to hold them in open and book supporting position.

The device forming the subject matter of the present invention is designed to afford a folding book rest, the members of which may be opened and locked in unfolded position to receive and hold books in open pos1t1on as when reading or studying the same.

The device is especially well adapted for use in connection with books and pamphlets that are read in connection with each other as for instance the Bible, the Christian Science publication, Science and Health, and the pamphlet or quarterly that is read by any in connection therewith, the object being to hold all three of the said works in open position at the same time. device is also of such shape and size as to just receive and inclose the said books and pamphlets that may be read in connection with each other when they are not in use, the said device acting as a receptacle and convenient case for the said books whether they are to be laid aside and protected from dust or damage or whether they are to be carried from place to place.

The details of the invention will now be more particularly described, reference being had to the said drawing, in which 5 indicates back sections of the book rest which are formed with end flanges 6 and side flanges 7, the said flanges forming closing edges for the device. The inner ends of the back sections 5 are hinged to a connecting hinge member 8. The two back sections 5 thus each have a hinge movement with respect to the hinge member 8, and the said hinge member closes the s ace between the two sections at one end w en the are folded into the position shown in Fig. 2. The hinge section 8 is formed with a guideway 9 to receive a slide 10 and the said slide carries a locking member 11 which is pivoted to the slide at 12, so that it may be turned parallel with the slide when the device is to be folded, and at right angles to the slide when it is to lock the parts in open position as shown in Fig. 1. As shown in said Fig. 1 also thelocking member 11 is provided with end projections 13, which are adapted to extend through slots 14 formed in the flanges 7 of the back sections and thus hold the back sections in alinement with each other when they are open. The said locking member 11 is preferably formed of material folded so as to provide a pamphlet or book receiving space 15 between the sides thereof as shown in Figs. 1 and 4. The end portions of the material thus doubled which project above the flanges 7 to ether with the central portion 16 which 1s also allowed to project above the flanges 7 constitute receiving and holding means for the edges of a pamphlet or other publication which may be mounted upon the rest. The slide 10 because of its relation to the pivotal connection with the locking member 11, will project above the same to form a back support for the pamphlet or other publication mounted in the said receiving space 15. When the parts are in this position as shown in Fig. 1 the device cannot be folded. When it is intended to fold the device, the slide 10 is moved downwardly in the guideway 9, carrying the locking member 11 with it, until the said looking member can be turned upon its pivot to the position shown in Fig. 3, after which the back sections 5 may be brought together and the whole device thus folded and arranged in compact form. A latch or clasp 17 hinged to one of the said backsections 5 is adapted to be brought over the edges of.

headed stud 21 carried by a bar 22'which 1s also pivoted upon the flange 6, one being provided for each back section 5; The bars 22 are pivoted to the back sections at 23 a sufficient distance from the pivot points 19 to permit of the said bars 22 being used as braces to hold the bars 18 in extended position asshown in Fig. 1. In this manner supporting foot portions or braces may be provided at each end of the device for holding it in set up form. The bars 18 and 20 are adapted to be folded, the said bars being formed with ofl set portions as shown in Fig. 1 so that they will fold over the bars 22. The said bars 18 are also provided with notches 24: to receive the studs 21 when the parts are in folded position as illustrated in Fig. 2. The ends of the bars 18 are arranged to extend beneath overhanging flanges 25 and 26 formed upon the outer ends of the back sections 5'. The clasp 17 is adapted to fit over the said bars when they are in folded position as will be clearly understood by reference to Fig. 2. The said parts are thus admirably adapted for supporting a book rest in open inclined 7 position for receiving the literature to be supported thereon and yet are capable of folding into very compact form when closed as a receptacle, ample room being provided inside for the reception of the literature or books which the book rest isadapted to suport. p Of course it will be understood that the parts of the rest may be made of metal or of any other suitable material and may be suitably designed and decorated within the spirit of the invention. The decorations provided upon the hinge member 8 may be so formed that projections forming parts thereof can be offset inwardly and outwardly, to form the guiding groove provided for the reception and movement of the slide 10.

What I claim is g 1. A combined book rest and receptacle, comprising a centrally disposed section,

back sections hinged thereto, and a slidable locking means being mounted on said cen tral section, said locking means being movable longitudinally on said central section and adapted when moved out of its normal position to engage and lock the back sections in rigid relation to said central section.

2. A combined book rest and receptacle, comprising back sections, a hinge section in; terposed between them permitting of their being folded to form a receptacle, a locking means engaging said back sections for holding said sections in unfolded position and end projections disposed upon said locking means affording a support for literature, books or the like.

3. A book rest and receptacle comprising back sections, a hinge connecting section joining them, a latch member movably mounted on the hinge section, and having projections adapted to hold literature in open form, and means for holding the device in approximately vertical or inclined position when acting as a book rest.

4:. A combined book rest and receptacle, comprising back sections having edge flanges, hinge means interposed between the said sections and permitting of their being folded to form a receptacle, means for holding them in unfolded position, and adjustable end supports comprising notched bars, and bars having detents adapted to engage the notches of said notched bars whereby the device when open may be supported in proper position for the reading of literature mounted thereon.
