WINDOW-VENTILATOR.
Beit known that 1, JOHN F. Gmcoivs SMITH, a citizen of the United States, re-
sidingat Washington, District of Columbia,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVindow-Ventilators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in window ventilators, and the object thereof is to provide a device of this character which may readily be attached towindows of various widths and which will admit a fresh supply of air to a room, and so direct or deflect the air into the room as to accomplish the best results while preventing the entrance of rain or snow.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily attached to the windowand which will not prevent the raising of the window to any desired height even when the window is provided with projecting finger holes.
With these and other ob ects in view my invention conslsts 1n certain constructions,
-combinations and arrangements of parts the preferred form of whlch will be first described in connection with the accompanying drawing and then the invention particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings wherein the same part is designated by the same refer-- ence numeral wherever it occurs, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention in position on a window and Fig. 2 is a cross section of the same.
5 and 6 designate a pair of plates, the plate 5 being provided in its lower portion with a plait 7 which forms a guide which is engaged by a plait 8 formed in the lower portion of the plate 6, whereby these plates may slide one upon the other. The plates 5 and 6 are each formed with a triangular shaped end portion 9, and the upper ends of the plates 5 and (l are bent over to form the upper portions 10, 11, respectively that extend over the upperedges of the end plates 9, whereby a box triangular in cross section is formed. The portions 10 and 11 are provided with openings 12 and 13, the openings 12 in the portion 10 being preferably formed of angularly disposed parallel slots cut in the portion 10 while the openings 13 are similar to the openings 12 but oppositely disposed. In order to support the ventilator in position I provide each of the end plates 9 at 'its inner edge. with an outwardly ex tending flange 15 adapted to slidably engage a guide 16 mounted at the sides of the window, so that the ventilator will be supported with its rear edges against and parallel to the window sash, as shown in the drawlngs.
} It will be noted that the mounting of the ventilator as just described permits of its ready removal from position and the placing of the same into position whenever desired.
As windows are frequently provided with finger holes that project from the window I preferably mount the guides for the ventilator in such a manner that the ventilator may be moved back from contact with the window, in order that the lattermay be raised higher than the top of the ventilator without the necessity of removing the ventilator from the guides. In order to effect this result I have provided the lower portion of each of the guides 16 with a spring hinge 17, the base of which is adapted to be secured to the window sill, the spring operating to hold the guide against the window frame and the ventilator in proper position, while permitting the top of the ventilator to be drawn back away from the window when desired, so that the finger holes, or other projections on the window sash may clear the upper edge of the ventilator without the necessity of removing the latter from the window.
In order to. make a tight fit between the lower edge of the ventilator and the window sill I preferably provide a length of rubber 18 which is in the form of a solid piece, preferably circular inxcross section, split on one side into which the lower edges of the plates 5 and 6 may be inserted. This rubber, after a ventilator has been adjusted to a window,'may be cut to the proper length and placed over the lower edge.
Consequently by this construction a simple,
packing is provided for the lower edge of I from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not intend to limit myself to the specific form shown and described.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I
l. A window ventilator comprising a pair of plates each provided with a plait on its lower edge adapted to slidably engage each other, each of said plates being provided with a triangular shaped end portion and a rearwardl'y projecting top portion whereby the ventilator is closed at its front, top and ends, said top portion being provided with openings therethrough, flanges extending from said end portions, guides slidably engaged by said end portions, said guides being provided with means at their lower ends adapted to be secured to a window sill,
whereby said ventilator may be held yieldingly against the window.
2. A window ventilator comprising a pair of plateseach provided with a plait on its lower edge adapted to slidably engage each other, each of said plates being provided with, a triangular shaped end portion and a rearwardly projecting top portion whereby the ventilator is closed at its front, top and ends, said top portion being provided with openings therethrough, flanges extending from said end portions, guides slidably engaged by said end portions, said guides being provided with spring hinges at their lower ends adapted to be secured to a window sill, whereby said ventilator may be held yieldingly against the window.
