4 Claims. (Cl. 160-104) This invention relates to construction materials, and more particularly to a ventilated screen door, window or the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a ventilated screen assembly which will insure that the screeen or reticulated material will not be damaged by impact from within or from without of the enclosure, and whereby the construction insures that there will be a minimum loss of ventilation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a ventilated louvered assembly which may be a screen door,-
window or the like, wherein there is provided contiguous to the screen a plurality of slats or louvers which serve to help protect the screen against impact or other damage, and whereby the slats are arranged so that there will be no interference with circulation of air through the door or window.
A further object of the invention is to provide a ventilated screen assembly which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the same.

Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates a frame such asthe frame of a doorv which includes spaced parallel vertically disposed side members 11, and horizontally disposed spaced parallel top and bottom members 12 and 13. These members 11, 12
2 and 13 may define a rectangular opening or space 14 therebetween.
Extending across the opening 14 is a reticulated member or screen 15, and the outer longitudinal edges of the screen 15 are received in U-shaped clamps 16. The clamps 16 are adapted to be secured to the frame 10 in any suitable manner, as for example by means of suitable securing elements such as the screws 17.
Arranged contiguous to the inner surface of each of the side members 11 is a channel member 18, Figures 5 and 6. Each of the channel members 18 includes a fiat web 19 which has a wall member 20 extending outwardly therefrom. The wall member 20 is arranged at right angles with respect to the web 19. .The channel shaped to include horizontal shoulders 24 and vertical edge portions 25, Figure 5. Arranged contiguous to the upper portion of the channel members 18 and extendingtransversely therebetween is a body member which is' indicated generally by the numeral 26. The body member 26 is shown in detail in Figure 7 and includes a horizontal flange 27 which abuts the shoulders 24. The body member 26 further includes a vertically disposed skirt 28 which is arranged contiguous to the edge portion 25, and the lower edge of the skirt 28 terminates in a curved portion 30. Depending from the flange 27 is a vertical lip 29 which may be interposed between the web 19 of the channel members 18, and the screen 15.
The assembly of the present invention further includes a plurality of louvers or slats which are indicated generally by the numeral 31, and each of the slats 31 includes a major portion 32 which has its longitudinal edges shaped arcuately as at 33. The slots 31 are arranged in overlapping relation with respect to each other as shown in the drawings.
There is further provided a pair of spaced parallel support members 34 which may have a substantial Z- shape, Figure 13. The support members 34 are adapted to be secured to the side members 11 of the frame 10 in. any suitable manner, as for example by means of screws 35. Sections of the support members 34 are adapted to engage end portions of the slats 31 so as the channelmembers 18. The channel members 36 may have substantially the same construction and purpose as the previously described channel members 18, except that the channel members 36 do not have a wall member 20."

From the foregoing, it is apparent that there has been provided a ventilated screen door or the like which is pro-- vided with a means for insuring that the screen or reticu-- lated member will not be damaged by impacts or the like, andwherein the present invention insures that there-'- will be, no decrease in the amount of ventilation provided.-
by the door. In Figures 1 through 8, there is illustrated one form of the invention, while in Figures 9 through 14 there is illustrated a slightly modified arrangement.
Patented Mar. 3, 1959 Thus, in Figures 1 through 8, a pair of channel members 18 are positioned within the door opening 14, and these channel members 18 are secured in place by means of suitable securing elements such as screws 37 which extend through the wall member 20 and into engagement with the side members 11 of the frame 10. The webs 19 of the channel members 18 are arranged contiguous to the screen or reticulated member 15. The channel members 18 are provided with a plurality of inclined fingers 21, and the fingers of the pair of channel members 18 provide supports for the plurality of louvers or slats 31. The slats 31 have the curved portions 33 which engage the tops and bottoms of the fingers 21 so that the slats 31 will be retained in place on the pair of channel members. It will be seen from the drawings, that the slats 31 are arranged in overlapping fashion as shown in Figure 3, for example, and these slats are spaced apart sufliciently so that air can pass therebetween whereby there will be no decrease in the ventilation provided by the screen 15 of the door. While the present invention has been described as adapted to be used with a door, it is to be understood that the present construction can also be used with windows or other construction materials. The pair of V-s'haped support members 34 are secured to the frame through the medium of securing elements 35, and the V-shaped support members 34 serve to retain the slats 31 in place of the channel members 18 so that the slats 31 will not accidentally Work loose. Thus, the channel members 36 may have substantially the same construction as the previously described channel members 18, except that the channel members 36 do not have a wall member 20. The channel members 36 are secured to the side members 11 by means of suitable securing elements such as screws 39 which extend through the web 19 and into the side members 11. The channel members 36 are provided with inclined fingers 21 which serve to support a plurality of overlapping slats or louvers 31, and the slats 31 are arranged so that air can pass therethrough. The Z-shaped support members 34 are again used for retaining the slats 31 in their proper position on the channel members 36.
' .As previously stated, in the modification shown in Figures 9 through 14, the assembly is arranged on the face of the opening 14 instead of being set or positioned against the screen wire as is the case with Figures 1 through 4.
With'the present invention, the screen wire 15 will be protected against impact from within or without and there will be a minimum loss of ventilation. Also, in the event that any of the slats 31 become broken or damaged, they can be readily replaced without the necessity of replacing the entire unit, and the device is easily moved for cleaning or the like. Furthermore, the arrangement provides increased beauty and adds to the privacy of a home or the like.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a frame including spaced parallel side members, and spaced parallel top and bottom members, said members defining therebetween an opening, a reticulated member extending across opening, a pair of spaced parallel U-shaped clamps engaging the longitudinal side edges of said re- Cit ticulated member and said clamps being secured to said frame, a pair of spaced parallel channel members positioned in said openings and each of said channel members including a web arranged contiguous to said reticulated member, a rectangular Wall member extending outwardly at right angles from said web and arranged contiguous to a side member of said frame and secured thereto, a plurality of coplanar fingers extending outwardly from said web and certain of said fingers including an inclined outer edge, there being arcuate cutouts interposed between said fingers, a plurality of slats extending transversely between said channel members and said slats being arranged in overlapping relation with respect to each other, said slats having curved edge portions projecting into said cutouts.
2. The structure as defined in claim 1 and further including Z-shaped support members-engaging the outer ends of said slats and secured to said frame.
3. In a device of the character described, a frame including spaced parallel side members, and spaced parallel top and bottom members, said members defining therebetween an opening, a reticulated member extending across said opening, a pair of spaced parallel U-shaped clamps engaging the longitudinal side edges of said reticulated member and said clamps being secured to said frame, a pair of spaced parallel channel members positioned in said openings and each of said channel members including a web arranged contiguous to said reticulated member, a rectangular wall member extending outwardly at right angles from said web and arranged contiguous to a side member of said frame and secured thereto, a
plurality of coplanar fingers extending outwardly from said.
Web and certain of said fingers including an inclined outer edge, there being arcuate cutouts interposed between said fingers, a plurality of slats extending transversely between said channel members and said slats being arranged in overlapping relation with respect to each other, said slats having curved edge portions projecting into said cutouts, Z-shaped support members engaging portions of said slats and secured to said frame, horizontally disposed shoulders on the uppermost end of the channel members, a body member including a horizontally disposed flange abutting said shoulders, a vertically disposed lip depending from one side of said flange, and a vertically disposed skirt terminating from the other side of said flange and terminating in a lower arcuate portion.
4. In a door of the type including a frame including spaced parallel side members and spaced parallel top and bottom members, said members defining therebetweenan opening, a reticulated member extending across said-opening, a pair of spaced parallel U-shaped clamps engaging the longitudinal side edges of said reticulated member and said clamps being secured to said frame, a pair of spaced parallel channel members positioned exteriorly of said opening and said channel members each including a web arranged contiguous to the side members of said frame and secured thereto, a plurality of coplanar fingers extending outwardly from said web and certain of said fingers including an inclined outer edge, there being arcuate cutouts interposed between said fingers, a plurality of slats extending transversely between said channel members and said .slats being arranged in overlapping relation with respect to each other, said slats having their vmajor portion engaging the inclined outer edges ofsaid fingers, and said slats having curved edge portions projecting into' said cutouts, and Z-shaped support members engaging the outer ends of said slats and secured to said frame.
