CHARLES H. C.v MARTIN, QF FORESTVILLE, NEW YORK.
CUSHION-HEEL.
Specification-of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug; 13,1912.
'Application ined December zo, 1911. serial No. 667,025.
To all whom it mog/concern.
Be it known that L-CHARLES H. C. MAR- -fr1N, a citizenof the United States, residing at Forestville, county of Chautauqua, State of New York, have invented certain new and' useful Improvements in Cushion-Heels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cushion or spi-ing heels for boots and shoes and its object is to simplify and improve the construction of devices of this character whereby their etliciency and durability will be increased.
This invention is an improvement on a construction shown in my Patent No. 632,467, granted September 5, 1899.
The novel features of the invention will be apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the drawings, in which,.
Figure 1 shows a portion of a shoe provided with my improved heel, the heel being .23 and 24 respectively.
shown in longitudinal section. Fig. 2
shows the .parts for'securing the heel to the shoe, in perspective. Fig. 3 is atransverse section on the line of Fig. 1.
As illustrated in the drawings, the invention comprises the sole or supporting base 10. Secured to the sole 10, in any suit-able manner, is the cushion 11, which may be made of rubber or any other suitable mate'- rial.- A. detachable heel portion 12 is fitted against the under side of the cushion 11 and may be constructed of leather or any other material, as may be found desirable.
The heel portion 12 comprises several layers or lifts and, as illustrated, it comprises the top lift 13, the bottom lift 14 and the intermediate lift 15. Between the lifts 13 and 15 I arrange a plate 16, which is suitably formed and provided with openings 17, through which pass the nails 18, for securing the lifts together. The cushion 11 is provided with an interior recess 19, in which is longitudinally arranged the bar 20, this har being fastened to the sole of the shoe by means of the yoke 21, which engages the iniddle'po1"rt n of the bar 20, between the shoulders The bar 20 'extends Slightly beyond the front end of the heel and is pro-A vided with screw-threaded openings 23 and 24. The plato 1G is provided with openings 25 and 26, which register with the openings A screw 27' is arranged in the opening 26 and has its head embedded in the heel portion, the threaded part of the screw projecting upwardly above the upper'surface vof the lift 13 and engaging lthe threaded opening 24. A. screwy 28 is arranged in the opening 25 in the plate 16, and engages the threaded opening 23 in the bar 20. The front portion of the heel is suitably recessed,v as at 29, so that the y screw 28 may be inserted lafter the heel portion is in position. The opening 26, in the plate 16, is made square and the portion'of the screw 27 which engages 'this opening is correspondingly formed for the purpose of preventing rotation of said screw relative to the plate. It will be understood that any other construction which will prevent the rotation of the screw 26, relative to the plate 16, will be suitable.-
j In order` to remove the heel portion 12 the'screw 28 is taken out and then the heel vdurable because the lift 14 may be of leather or any other suitable wear resisting material and Athe cushion is subjected to practically no wear. rlh'e heel will be very effective as a cushion heel as the bar 20 is free to move in the yoke 21 as the cushion 11 is compressed and expanded.
Having thus described my invention, 'what I claim is thl 1. In a spring heelfor boots and shoes, a supporting base, an elastic cushion securedv to the base, a detachable heel portion fitted against said cushioma supporting member secured to said base and provided with openings, a screw embedded in said heel portion and adapted-to engage one of said openings, and a second screw engaging said heel portion and one of said openings and adapted to be inserted after the heel portion is in position.
2. In a spring heel for boots and shoes, a supporting base,`an elastic cushion secured tov the base, a detachable heel portion fitted againstsaid cushion, a supporting member secured to saidbase and extending longitudinally thereof and provided with threadsupporting base, an elastic cushion secured to the base, a detachable heel portion iitted against `said cushion, a longitudinally eX- tending bar arranged in said cushion yand secured to said base and provided with screW-' threaded openings at its ends, a plate se- 'cured tol said heel portion, and screws engaging said plate and the threaded openings in said bar, one of said screws being inaccessible and the otheraccessible from the lower side of said heel portion.
d. in a spring heeldfor boots and shoes, a supporting base, an elastic cushion secured to the base, a detachable heel portion iitted against said cushion, a centrai recess in the iower side of said cushion, a longitudinally arranged bar in said recess-'and providedl with screw-threaded openings at its ends, a plate secured tosaid base and supporting said bar, a plat-e embedded in said heel portion and provided with openings correspending with the openings in said bar, and screws arranged in Athe openings in said plate and engaging vthe screw-threaded openings in said bar, one of said screws being nozii'ota, table relative to the piate' invsaid heel portion.
5. in a spring heel for boots and shoes, a supporting base, an elastic cushion secured to the base, a detachable heel portion fitted against saidl cushion, and means for securing Copies of 'this patent may be obtained for are cents ingr addressing the ,Gommissoner of ra Washington, '.t. G.
said heelportion in position and comprising abar extending longitudinally of the heel and provided with screwthreadcd openings in its ends, a yoke secured to the base and engaging the middle portion of said bar, a plate embedded in said heel portion, open# ,ings in said plate registering with the openings in said bar and screws arranged in the openings in said plate and said bar and adaptedto secure the heel portion in position, one of said screws being non-rotatable in said plate.
6. In a sprlng heel for boots and shoes, a
supporting base, an elastic cushion secured onnnnns n. o. Maurin.
