@"ZWW UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTTO BANNER, OF EASTON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO INGERSOLL-RAND COM- PANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
TURBINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O'r'ro BANNER, a subject of the German Emperor, and resident of Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in 'lurbine-l higines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists of a double flow mixed pressure turbine engine of the socalled action or velocity type in which the shaft may be driven by high pressure or low pressure motive fluid or by a combination of the two, the high pressure fluid passing through the two high pressure elements and the two low pressure elements in opposite directions to a central outlet chamber and the low pressure tluid passing through the two low pressure elements in the opposite direction to a central outlet chamber, means being provided whereby the admission of motive fluid is independently controlled to the several low and high pressure inlet chambers.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawing, which shows a. turbine engine half in side elevation and half in longitudinal central vertical section with my invention applied thereto.
The shaft is denoted by 1, the low pressure blade wheels by 2 and the high pressure blade wheels by 3.
Each low pressure blade wheel is shown as provided with a single row of blades 1- and each high pressure blade wheel is shown as provided with a single row of blades The partitions in the low pressure elements are denoted by 6 and their nozzles by 7. The partitions in the high pressure elements are denoted by 8 and their nozzles by 9.
A common outlet chamber 10 is provided. Upon opposite sides of this outlet chamber I provide the two low pressure elements and beyond these elements I provide low pressure inlet chambers 11 and 12 communicating with their inlets 13, 14. Valves 15, 1t serve to control the admission of the motive fluid under low pressure to these inlet chambers 11 and 12. Beyond these low pressure inlet chambers 11 and 12 are located the two high pressure elements and beyond these high pressure elements I provide the high pressure inlet chambers 17, 1S, commnnicat- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing with their inlets 1t), 20. The admission of motive fluid under the high pressure inlet chambers 17 and 18 is independently controlled by valves 21,
The casing may be divided transversely vertically and also in a horizontal plane coincident with the axis of the shaft 1 to form upper and lower half end members 23, 24-, 25, 26, half cylinder members 27, 28, 2t), 3t), and half divided ring members 31, 32, 3-1. The lower half cylinder members 28, 30, may be provided with brackets 35, 36, for use in supporting the engine.
The bearings for the shaft 1 at the opposite ends of the *asing may be divided in a horizontal plane coincident with the axis of the shaft 1 to form upper and lower half sections 37, 38, 35), 10.
\Vhile I have shown the two low pressure elements as each comprising four stages and the two high pressure elements as each comprising two stages and have shown single rows of blades, it is to he understood that the number of stages and the number of rows of blades may be varied to suit different requirements.
It will be seen that the parts are so arranged that the shaft may be driven by admitting the low pressure fluid to either one or both of the low pressure elements or by supplying high pressure fluid to one or both of the high pressure elements or by any combination of these several supplies to suit different requirements.
\Vhat I claim is 1. A mixed pressure turbine engine having two pairs of inlet chambers and an intermediate outlet chamber common to all the inlet chambers.
2. A mixed pressure turbine engine of the velocity type having two pairs of inlet chambers and an intermediate outlet chamber common to all the inlet chambers.
3. A mixed pressure turbine engine having two low pressure inlet chambers, two high pressure inlet chambers and an intermediate outlet chamber common to the high and low pressure inlet chambers.
-Zl-.. A mixed pressure turbine engine of the velocity type having two low pressure inlet chambers, two high pressure inlet chambers and an intermediate outlet chamber common to the high and low pressure inlet chambers.
A mixed pressure turbine engine having two low pressure inlet chambers, two
high pressure inlet chambers, an intermediate outlet chamber common to the high and low pressure inlet chambers, and means for independently controlling the admission of the motive fluid to the high and low pressure inlet chambers.

A mixed pressure turbine engine having two low pressure inlet chambers, two high pressure inlet chambers beyond the low pressure inlet chambers, a common intermediate outlet chamber, and means for independently controlling the admission of the motive fluid to the high and low pressure inlet chambers. v
10. A mixed pressure turbine engine of the velocity type having two low pressure inlet chambers, two high pressure inlet chambers beyond the low pressure inlet chambers, a common intermediate outlet chamber, and means for independently controlling the admission of the motive fluid to the high and low pressure inlet chambers.
11. A mixed pressure turbine engine having two low pressure elements with inlet chambers beyond them, two high pressure elements and their inlet chambers located beyond the low pressure inlet chambers and a common outlet chamber located between the two low pressure elements.
12. A mixed pressure turbine engine of the Velocity type having two low pressure elements with inlet chambers beyond them, two high pressure elements and their inlet chambers located beyond the low pressure inlet chambers and a common outlet chamber located between the two low pressure elements.
13. A mixed pressure turbine engine having two low pressure elements with inlet chambers beyond them, two high pressure elements and their inlet chambers located beyond the low pressure inlet chambers, a common outlet chamber located between the two low pressure elements, and means for independently controlling the admission of the motive fluid to the high and low pressure inlet chambers.
