TURBINE.
Application mea :December a?, 1911. serial No. 668,034.
To all whomfz't may concern Be it known that I, OTTO BANNER, a subject of the German Emperor, and resident of Easton, in thecounty of Northampton and State ofPennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Turbine-Engines, of which the following is a specifica-l tion.
This invention consists of a double flow mixed pressure turbine engine of the socalled action or velocity type, the-parts .being so ,arranged that intermediate high and low pressure inlets and two outlets are provided, the high pressure element bein located in the low pressure inlet chamber intermediate the two oppositely arranged low pressurel elements.
A practical embodiment of this invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a view of the turbine engine half in side elevation and half in longitudinal central vertical section, a high pressure blade wheel being shown with one row of blades carried thereby, and Fig. 2 is a detail section showing the high pressure blade wheel having two rows of blades carried thereby with an interposed row of fixed blades carried by the casing. r
Theengine shaft is denoted by 1,-the blad wheel of the high pressure element by 2, its blades by 3; the blade wheels ofthe two low pressure elements by 4 and -their rows of blades by 5. The casing is provided `at its ends with chambers 6, 7, communicating with the outlets 8, 9. These chambers and outlets are herein shown as provided in end members of the casing divided in' a horizontal plane co-incident with the axis of the shaft l into upper and lower half sections 10, 11, and 12, 13. Inside of the end mern bers of the casing are located the cylindrical members which are also shown as divided in a horizontal plane co-incident with the axis of the shaft 1 into upper and lower half sections 14,15, and 16, 17, respectively. A
ring member is interposed'between the two cylindrical members of the casing, which ring member is also shown as divided in a horizontal plane co-incident with the axis of the shaft 1 into upper and lower half sections 18, 19. It is to be understood that these different members and sections are to be bolted or otherwise secured together to form a rigid whole surrounding the shaft 1.
The blade wheel 2 of the high pressure element is located within the chamber 20 communicating with the lower pressure inlet 21. The motive fluid within this chamber 20 1s caused to pass inv opposite directions outwardly through the two low pressure elements into the outlet chambers 6, 7.
. A high pressure chamber 22 is provided in a connection 23 carried by the upper half section 18of the intermediate ring member 13, 1t), which high pressure inlet chamber is prov1ded with a .nozzle or nozzles 24 fordirectlng themotive fluid against the row of blades 3 of thehigh pressure wheel 2. This high pressure motive fluid after exerting its force upon the high pressure wheel mixes with the low pressure motive fluid and passes outwardly in opposite directions through the low pressure elements into the outlet chambers 6 and 47'.
In Fig. 2 I have shown the high pressure wheel 2 as provided with two rows of blades 25, 26, and the casing as provided with an interposed single row of fixed blades 27.
The partitions of the low pressure elements are denoted by 28 and their nozzles by 29. I The bearings for the shaft 1 at the opposite ends of the casing are preferably divided in a horizontal plane coincident with the axis of the shaft 1 to form upper and lower half sections 30, 31, and 32, 33, respectively.
The lower half sections 11 and 13 of the end members of thecasing may be provided with brackets 34, 35, for use in supporting the engine.
While I have shown the high pressure blade wheel as having a greater'blade diameter than that of the low pressure blade wheels and have shown it as having only a single row of blades, still itis to be understood that I do not wish to limit myself to this construction as the blading of the high pressure wheel may have a diameter equal to or less than the blading 'of the low pressure wheels and may have any number of rowsof blades as may be desired. I have also shown the turbine engine as having four stages upon each side of the motive fluid inlet in the low pressure elementsand the wheels as having single rows of blades but the number of stages and the number of rows of blades may be varied as desired without departing from the scope of my invention.
It will be seen that in an engine of the character herein shown and described, the shaft may be driven either by the high pressure alone or by thelow pressure or by a combination of the two according tothe work required.
What I claim is l. A mixed pressure turbine engine including a casing divided transversely vertically into end members containing the outlet chambers for the lowcpressure elements, cylindrical members containing the low pressure elements, and an intermediate ring member containing the high pressure element and low pressure inlet'chamber.
Q. A mixed pressure turbine engine including a casing divided horizontally into upper and lower half sections and transversely vertically into end members containing the outlet chamber for the low pressure elements, cylindrical members containing the low pressure elements and an intermediate ring member containing' the high pressure element and low pressure inlet chamber.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two witnesses, this 23d day of Dec. 1911.
